Heading into this free agency, the top names at the position appeared to be Tremaine Edmunds, TJ Edwards, Lavonte David, David Long and Germaine Pratt. Edmunds got the money he was expected to receive in the open market, but Edwards, Long and Pratt all signed contracts for way under their "market value". Meanwhile, the Giants give Okereke $10mil per.
I'm not bashing the Giants signing of Okereke, but given the contract they gave him it would appear they ranked him higher than Edwards, Long, and Pratt. If not, then something appears off to me as the Giants would've obviously offered more to those three than the teams they signed for gave them.
i do kind of agree though that some of the numbers are a little surprising in how low they are, and id probably preferred to roll the dice on edwards at half the price of okereke as an example. but i dont think very many players are taking less so i think the nyg had a chance to get those guys if they wanted for less than they gave okereke and yet they still chose to pay him. hopefully they are right.
The Eagles made no attempt to re-sign TJ Edwards because he is very poor in coverage.
David Long is an undersized LB who doesn’t really fit our scheme.
And the price is very reasonable. Look at Edmunds deal, I know there are more details to examine, but he’s guaranteed twice as much as Okereke and the Bills fans weren’t sad to see him leave.
pff projected his contract at:
4 yrs — $9.5m avg/yr
$22.75m guaranteed, $38m total
(so basically exactly what the nyg gave him)
The Bobby O contract is a bit much for me at first blush, but not one that is just plainly an overpay like the ones Gettleman handed out. Way too early to make sweeping proclamations one way or the other. If nothing else, I trust Wink to put him in the best role possible.
Actually a lot of the David Long, Germaine Pratt and TJ Edwards talk came from rumors Giant beat writers and some asshats on here wrote about, including GoDeep13. Most said Giants were interested in all three.
We would be lucky to get him in round 2.
Not to mention how the rest of the NFL views them

No I don’t get paid to research and watch film on these guys. However, I do follow the Giants beat writers and this site closely, and the past week or two Edwards, Pratt and Long have been mentioned multiple times by several people as players the Giants have inquired about, and were interested in.
And I agree with you on Lavonte David, I don’t think the Giants have any interest in signing him, nor would I want them to because of his age. But he is still a top LB in the league.
ding ding ding.
THIS.
From what I can tell, he's the most complete player of the bunch, especially in coverage.
Does this tiresome drivel need to be repeated every fucking time someone merely posts an observation about a free agency market in real time? It's obviously implied that Schoen/Daboll/Martindale have a stronger opinion of Okereke than they do about several other FA LBs. Does that mean that it's off-limits to even discuss the relative value (and potential bargain/overpay) of comparative free agents at the same position?
Fans are generally a bit better informed now about available guys in FA; but few (including the beat guys) really consider scheme fits etc, beyond 'this guy has a connections to X coach/player'. Sometimes the amount of info out there is overload and we overanalyze. Back in 2005, it would have been a unanimous 'Yes! We needed a LB and got one!'
Funny, in '05 our big signings were ILB, WR and RT. I think our big adds this year may be similar, though we have more draft capital to fill those. Fill ILB, WR in draft, C in draft/FA - and bring back or replace Love - and I think we have a solid base for next year.
p.s.--I get that you put "market value" in quotes, but that doesn't change its definition.
