Morning Thoughts on FA

HammerTime75 : 3/14/2023 9:40 am
I had this thought on the way in to work today. It's probably good that I don't know who these guys are that the Giants signed yesterday, generally speaking.

I knew who S*ld*r and G*llad*y were, of course. If the guy is already a name, and the team who already had him doesn't want to pay him, then there's probably something wrong. Plus, you're paying for past performance.

Thoughts?
I'd heard of Nunez-Roches in 2020,
Angel Eyes : 3/14/2023 9:45 am : link
when he started 11 games in lieu of Vita Vea after he was lost for the year.

That being said, I'm not really too sure on him given his skillset; he's primarily a run stuffer and inside pass-rush is still a need if Leonard Williams isn't on the field.
Not necessarily

Indy is in a difficult situation with their cap because of all of their failed QB stopgaps and putting off cap hits to afford guys like Buckner when their window was closing. They also have Leonard at LB so Okereke was someone they just could not afford.
Colts were 4 deep at LB

And couldn't afford to sink too much money in the unit. Similar to how we let a really good player in Dalvin Tomlinson walk a few years ago. Not long after we inked Okereke, they re-signed one of their other backers at 2yr 9m. It was cap economics with Okereke.
Weird logic

In 2005 the Giants signed Antonio Pierce, Plaxico Burress, and Kareem McKenzie. Did their teams not want them back?

The Colts are in a tough spot cap wise plus they already paid Darius Leonard so they couldn’t afford to spend big on another LB.

I get your premise

We didn't overpay for a big name like we did Solder or Golladay.

I think both are solid signings which is all I ask for. Okereke will start for us right away. All-Pro? Not at all, but he'll fill a major role in our defense at a level much higher than our players last year could.

Nunez-Roches was signed to be a high end back up or rotational player, his contract reflects that and he's very good in that role.

Even with both of these guys being added, I still expect another DL and LB coming via draft or free agency.

Honestly - the only move I wasn't a fan of was resigning Shepard.

The Giants didn’t pay for “last performance”
Jay on the Island : 3/14/2023 10:06 am : link
Okereke is only 26 and has gotten better over the past two seasons. He is entering his 5th season in the NFL so he will be in his prime for his entire contract here. Had the Giants signed 33 year old Lavonte David then that would have been paying for past performances.

I agree with the pass rusher from the interior. I think a bigger DE is going to be in the cards in round 1 who can shift to the interior for pass rush.

This. Signing good players over 30 is a risk. It's funny. People blah and blah about analytic and how they are a must. Remember all the angst that DG refused to use analytics. Well analytics say don't sign or trade for older players but contracts

Okereke is the type of signing that this team god away from. Not an over pay and not a cap buste and a younger guy in his second deal whom the Colts couldn't afford. Win win for the player and the Giants.

"Nacho" is here to give Dex a break without the run D suffering as much as it did last year. He'll probably play around 30% of the defensive snaps, none on obvious passing downs.

I still hope the Giants sign a UFA DE to pair with LW. GoDeep13 mentioned interest in A'Shawn Robinson, which would please me greatly, as would Rasheem Green.

Would love if it’s van ness or K white. Way too much fall off when reserves came in.
I love if we can come at you in waves. All for a line that’s 6-7 deep
I have some home that Davidson can give some good run stuffer snaps
