I think there is some concern we overpaid given what the market looks like. But, I think most think he will help. I personally think we overpaid, but if he helps nobody will care on this contract. Link - ( New Window )
Okereke will starting mlb...3 down player...Has pretty much the same salary as Martinez....
And cap has increased since.
Let's see details
I agree it is not our money but if we could use money elsewhere, it matters to the fan. But, this contract is not so onerous that if he helps we will all be happy with the signing. Our second level run defense was pathetic and if we overpaid a bit to help solve that problem, I think most, including myself, can deal with it.
... and foremost but there was no way we were paying him what he got. The next LB on their list of wants for what Wink does was Okereke. Based on the game he had against us last year I'm excited, I wanted the Giants to sign him since that game. He was all over the field that day and was easily the best player on their defense (that day). He is a really good run defender with decent coverage skills for the middle of our defense. Apparently strong and fast blitzer as well. The Giants wanted him and didn't screw around. I figured David Long was high on our list, but it seems like Okereke was the top target after Edmunds. They know what they are looking for.
Long is nowhere near what Okereke is. Also read that he is constantly hurt, apparently the hammies are always giving him trouble. He's missed 12 games in the last 2 seasons, Okereke has missed 2 games in his 4 year career.
Availability is key.
It's not about the money as much as it is about the fit.
but seems obvious to me that Wimk needed a certain skill set (coverage abaility) that allows him to keep a LB aim the field at all times and run certain plays. At that price, Okereke must significantly expand the play book.
I like to think of the NYGs as good friends. Maybe up there with the best of friends. Family if you will. And like good friends and family, what they do with their money is really not our business. We can agree. We can disagree. We can agree to disagree. But at the end of the day, if they like a guy enough to pay him with a decent contract, they're going to do it. If the guy pans out, they look smart. If he doesn't, all we can really do is acknowledge a swing and a miss. We have zero control and rarely do fans actually know better than the people in the business doing the actual scouting, research analysis, interviews, negotiations and decision making. So I Just root for the guys they sign and hope for the best!
RE: It's not about the money as much as it is about the fit.
that they had targeted, the kind of player they covet at a key position of need.
He's going to have the kind of impact Blake Martinez had in his first year. We were sorely missing that kind of player and now we have one that has an even better, more consistent track record than Martinez had.
Ironically - I think the loser here may be Julian Love, because this guy had even more of an impact in the center of the field than Love did. I know Julian is a safety -- but he came down in the box and played the portion of the field, that Okereke will play for all 3 downs, a lot last year, and Love had an impact there allbeit that the Giants were still weak in the run game.
Okereke is a gap closer, and a good tackler with decent speed and size
Someone mentioned yesterday that Okereke lined up not only at ILB but
and pass on him. We don't pay him
what is it you want to bew doing with that money instead? what is your priority? what greater concern was it you rather we dealt with instead. You don't like Schoens decision and prefer he spend it elsewhere. On who?
RE: Someone mentioned yesterday that Okereke lined up not only at ILB but
also on the outside, slot CB and safety. He has what Wink wants for sure.
I am not an expert on Wink's D but it does seem that he likes players with some versatility — if only to be able to disguise what he's doing.
Related: While Dex seems entrenched as nose tackle, I think they're going to look for a player to back up, and maybe eventually replace, Leonard Williams. A versatile guy who can play inside but also move outside and play like a 4-3 DE.

I actually think they will look for a 5T DE to start with Williams and Lawrence. Bigger DE that they can move inside.
David Long was on NFL Total Access two days ago and when asked about his parameters for signing somewhere, state tax was mentioned as one of them, even if maybe half joking. He did non-the-less mention it. I for one was not surprised he ended up in a state with no tax. 10% off your income is a big nut for these guys to contemplate and can be a reason why the Giants need to go higher in some cases to get their man signed.
seems notable given how often schoen/dabs talk about character and how much they pay attention to how players interact with everyone in the building. obviously they like okereke the player first and foremost but seems like they got a guy who also fits the culture.
"It's a Colts life" you need to. He has NY Giants player written all over him. What a great kid and player. We got a good one here I think we re all gonna love.
..in the LB room as they transition to purely this regime's selections. If you intend to have one talented vet in there to show the young guys how to do it on and off the field, this is a good choice.

Let it play out for a year and the performance will tell the story of his worth.
I like this signing very much.
Long wanted a no tax state. But contract is way less. I can understand 10% to cover taxes but this is a lot more
Since wink is a lb guy, u know he had a ton of input. Makes sense.

The type of player, skillset and deployment in our defense, this move makes a ton of sense based on need and such.
