What’s it like to be an official in the final moments?

US1 Giants : 3/14/2023 1:58 pm
Interesting article with input from several:

Quote:
Mike Pereira, Fox football rules analyst, former college football and NFL referee, and NFL director of officiating: The weak ones might take the weak way out because they don’t want to be part of the story. But the strong ones won’t take the easy way out. If it’s something obvious, you have to call it. It’s not fair to anybody to change your criteria in the final two minutes. Hell, why don’t we take the officials off the field and let the players decide? There’s enough gray area already that if you start playing those mind games like that, I think you’re heading down a slippery slope.

I officiated HS basketball for close to 20 years and reffed a lot with guys who work D1. Actually saw Clougherty speak. I watch the SH-Michigan game in college. It was a horrendous call then and almost 35 years later I still think it was horrendous call but I give the guy a lot of credit. He has always been a stand-up guy about it and while he'll never admit it was the wrong call, he does also say that it's open to debate. I love the points made in the article about making calls at the end of the game. People always say " don't make calls let the players decide it!" Well if you let illegal contact go that give one player the advantage you are not "letting the players fairly decide the game"

Only one classier in that unfortunate circumstance was PJ. To his eternal credit, he took the high road from the jump.

Wasn't everyone bitching about the non-call on Crabtree in the Super Bowl the Ravens won vs the 49ers? Funny. Then 10 years later, they say "you cannot make a call like that at the end of the game!" after the Bradberry call in the last SB.

Anyway, call me crazy, but I thought that was a good no call against Baltimore in that Super Bowl.

Absolutely! I never had heard that story about PJ before the article. That really was classy of him. A lot of coaches would be crying about it to no end to this day. I mean think about what it did to PJ's career and how different things would be if he was a national championship coach.
