What are your thoughts after 2 days?

Rudy5757 : 3/14/2023 8:50 pm
I’m kinda thinking we did Ok but I feel disappointed if that makes any sense.

Okerakee seems like a good signing but to me seems like a bit of an overpay.

The DT was needed. I don’t know much about him but he looks like a good run stuffer. Not a guy I was thinking of but fills a need.

Waller is a good gamble. He’s been injured but if healthy can be a home run. A 3rd seems like an OK gamble so we will see.

I do think the guys we resigned were no brainers.

I’m not disappointed we lost Gates. I wish him well but it seems like an overpay.

We still have a long way to go to close the gap on Dallas and the Eagles.

I guess I’m indifferent right now. I really wanted a C and don’t want Feliciano back. I wanted a WR but it’s a really weak FA class. Maybe we can get an upgrade at Sor at least bring Love back.

Waller has no risk though...if he doesn't work out, you cut him and all you lose is pick 100. No financial burden whatsoever.
If Waller remains healthy....what not to like?
George from PA : 3/14/2023 9:45 pm : link
The MLB is a 3 down player....I haven't seen the specifics of deal....but at most...he is getting paid the same as Martinez....the Giants MLB when cap was substantially less.
I like the FA moves so far
Rick in Dallas : 3/14/2023 9:51 pm : link
Tight now I would like to see Schoen make the following transactions:
Restructure Williams
Restructure Jackson
Extend Dex
Those moves along with releasing Golladay will allow for an additional move in FA.
I like the Waller move...

because it's high reward with moderate risk.

Spending on inside linebackers isn't really a good cap strategy. Okereke is a good player, but stopping the run really starts up front with gap-eating DTs.

But also- where the hell am I putting all of this snow? The Waller trade was a great distraction this afternoon in the midst of the 32” that fell here

but the Nunez-Roches one concerns me. Given what Nunez-Roches is good at (stuffing the run and doesn't offer much as an inside pass-rusher), this could mean that DJ Davidson isn't completely back from his injury and I don't see either player as a backup to Leonard Williams.

ILB was such a strong class i figured that's something they'd get but if you just told me the contracts i would have thought they'd prefer edwards to okereke. i do think okereke is a higher upside player though so i dont mind that.

Waller is the exact type of trade i expected/wanted just not a player i considered. a little more injury trouble than id have preferred.

i dont know anything about the DL they signed but i do think that was a big need.

I think Edwards overrated playing behind Philly dline.
As a team that had around 8-9 holes after the season, we are starting to close the gap. This is not a 1 yr thing. But I believe we should fill a few more with draft , trade or FA . We won’t get all the way there.
Player development is more important than March offseason shopping.
I
there's more to do and i expect we'll see more done. i think they made their 2 biggest moves but i think we'll see another WR and some depth players added. hopefully love back. think we'll see some extensions too but that could be later this offseason.

+1. Finding linebackers who can cover is like finding hen's teeth for the Giants.
So happy they got a 26 year old at worst
Ned In Atlanta : 3/14/2023 10:22 pm : link
Above average LB. Piece and Martinez are the only good ones we’ve had in the last 15 years. Think the waller move is a very smart, low risk gamble. Do wonder cap wise if they have to end up releasing Williams, which creates a gigantic hole. With Jones’ $45 million cap hit and massive extensions for AT and Dex coming can only front load so many contracts. Draft is gonna be massive for the future
Great start, hoping for a WR still on a rookie contract
CornerStone246+17 : 3/14/2023 10:24 pm : link
Like Jeudy with a 5th year option. And a decent M2M CB with some size to complement Adoree like Rock Ya Sin.

If they can pull that off this team will have drastically reduced it's biggest weaknesses from last year heading into next season.

I don’t think it’s much of an overpay ( if at all). Dude just hitting his stride, has been healthy. I would think he can be a more athletic Martinez. Hopefully. A Pierce level. Possible j Davis shows enough to be ok as 2nd ILB. Or , since we are due some luck, beavers is basically 100% and he was actually a find who will win the starters job and be better than average.

So far so good.

Exactly! When was the last time we had a linebacker that has the skillset Okereke brings. I think we sometimes forget how bad our linebackers have been. Plus he is only 26 and is an ascending player. This notion that linebackers shouldn't be valued anymore is total bunk.

I can understand that. However, it does concern me that there doesn't appear to be an option should Leonard Williams get hurt (and he was last year). Unless the Giants re-sign Nick Williams or if they're weighing prospects in the draft, the closest guy would be Ryder Anderson and he's nearly 30lbs lighter than Williams.

Wouldn’t nunez be first guy in for both Leo and dex? Think he moves around the line often. Would also not be surprised if we draft a developmental guy, similar to Davidson. Mid rd with some upside if he improves

was still in a tough situation financially, even with the construction of the DJ contract, having to address the LW and AJ contracts, while trying to work out an SB and Love contracts, and hopefully address Dex, McKinney extensions.
Re-signing Gillian, and Shepard, and to me to some extent Breida to ‘prove it’ contracts was well done, as was the NT’s.
The key now are the LW and AJ contracts.
The Okereke get was excellent, and the Waller trade gives both onfield talent, and a vet for Bellinger to bounce off of.
Was hoping they got Bradbury from Minnesota to solidify the C spot on the OL, but that likely now gets filled in the draft, since the top 3 FAs are off the market.
I don’t know who else they may sign in FA, but I believe they will still draft LB, TE, and DT, besides WR.
Given the hand dealt them, I AM impressed with what has been done, and still owning all but the #100 pick.

90.Cal : 3/14/2023 11:29 pm : link
- love the Waller trade but we still need a WR1

- love the Okereke signing but we should still draft another ILB

- who is playing Center? Do we address that now or in the draft?

- is Josh Ezeudu our Left Guard or do we add someone there?

- I know he is older but why not add Calais Campbell? He’s familiar with Wink’s system and paired alongside Dex and Leo they would be a tough front for anyone.

- lastly… OBJ, just do it. Get DJ another weapon. He’s better than every option out there at WR in the free agent market and he wants to play here, if they can work a deal I would love to see it happen

I think some mistake the overachieving success last season as the norm where in reality last season was supposed to be a roster dump and fix the cap by taking our lumps last year. They hit a home run with the staff and the team overachieved by a lot. This year imo we should improve even if the record regresses a little with a much harder schedule. Hit this draft out of the park and another solid off-season we should enter the season as legit contenders and possibly be one of the favorites by the end.

But none of this matters unless they can get a grasp of this beyond rediculous injury situation. This should be top priority and price should be irrelevant. Anything else would be like going grocery shopping and deciding toilet paper is where you want to cut the budget.
And to answer the op I have one thought
eli4life : 3/15/2023 4:09 am : link
Holy shit!!!!!!! A LB that can cover and a tight end that can catch on our roster????? It’s been so long it’s like being a virgin again.
Okereke was a bit of an overpay, but that may have been necessary to
Ira : 3/15/2023 4:24 am : link
sign him in the beginning of free agency. Waller was a gamble, but it was a necessary one, since we aren't getting any top receivers at an affordable price in this market. We took care of one of our biggest needs on offense and on defense. We'll see what comes next.
Schoen has a plan and he’s executing
Big Blue '56 : 3/15/2023 5:08 am : link
it piece by piece. Given how he’s shown his mettle in a short period of time, I look for additional fits. I will be patient as a fan and look to where it all matters, the draft. I’ve opined what I considered a big hole, LB and that was thankfully addressed in his first move-we need more there,imv..

Satisfied? We’re not done yet
Quietly optimistic
Fred-in-Florida : 3/15/2023 5:25 am : link
We added a much needed ILB. Ours were bad last year. Wen we signed Davis at the end of the year people were saying he was our best LB. Did we overpay? Salary cap has always been an issue and we spent a bit more but the return could be well worth it. Especially if it shores up the run D. B- because of the slight overpay. Tough smart and dependable

Waller could be more than a home run. Maybe a walk off homer. But his injury history worries me. We've been historically the most injured team is the last 10 years.Looks like pretty friendly salary/cap hit. B Only because of injury history.
Smart and tough.. Lets hope he stay injury free so he can be dependable.

Nacho - where did he get that name. We did have Snacks so...
As soon as Leo and Dex needed a break the D-line was horrible. He should be able to shore up the front and be a good rotational player. C+ Not a starter by any means but should be good depth. Definitely tough should be smart and dependable.
You can quibble about overpaying but it seems
bigbluescot : 3/15/2023 5:49 am : link
we've made some smart moves to mean we don't have to shop too hungry in the draft, when you're drafting in the mid 20's you really want to be flexible on quality players who drop not fixated on having to get a particular position

Bit surprised we've not went for a CB, currently we seem a bit light on experience there, but the CB market seems a little stuck. Perhaps Bradberry's resign etc will kick it into gear.

I don’t quibble about “overpaying,” as that’s

Waller has four years and $52.5 million remaining on his contract. His $11 million salary this year is the only guarantee the Giants inherit. Waller will count $12.4 million on the Giants’ cap, per OverTheCap.com. The Giants do have the ability to convert Waller’s base salary to signing bonus, spreading out the cap hit over those remaining four years, if they wish to create more cap space for this year.

I got some pushback when I said the Giants were now in a Super Bowl window once they signed Jones. Now they are building around Jones.

It reminds me a lot of the 2005 off-season. The talk of the 3-4 year rebuild of last year is no longer the case. Speaking of which, has anyone heard from M.S.? I hope he’s well. He was the leader of the “4 year rebuild” brigade.

They now have a ILB and hopefully improved depth on the D interior. With Waller they have a weapon that can stress defenses from different spots.

First goal for me is to win the division. The big thing holding that back is winning the LOS battle.

DE, corner, WR and IOL are the last positions to target for me for now.

I hope JS can knock out two of these with the remaining FA and then hit the rest in the draft.
Waller
Hilary : 3/15/2023 8:23 am : link
Waller has all of the same issues as Toney.
He has higher upside but is older and more expensive.
High risk of being a large waste of cap space and a top 100
pick (101) but he may add a lot to the offense if he stays healthy and has not regressed with age and injury
They are 'going for it'
fkap : 3/15/2023 8:25 am : link
but not in a 'our SB window is now' sense.

This team definitely needed/needs improvement in order to compete for a SB, and that's the goal of any team. Standing pat, and working on having a good draft isn't going to get you there. You need both strong FA and draft. So far, it would not seem that these FA moves are going to leave the Giants in the lurch in a year or two.

AcesUp : 3/15/2023 9:05 am : link
Even if they have to cut him next year or the year after, it would not change how I feel about that. The financial and draft capital risk is minimal, basically 1yr 12m and the 100th pick on the downside. Upside is enormous. You potentially have a top 3 TE being paid less than the top 30 pass catchers in football (TE market inefficiency) on a very flexible contract that lets you move money around as you please. If you hit the upside on his contract, you can take down his year 2 number to nothing as DJs contract increases and dummy the last of his 4 years.

In terms of need, I don't think enough fans appreciated the need at pass catcher and the need to get stud in there ASAP. They either needed a number 1 WR or at least an upgrade over Slayton as a vertical threat. You needed a guy that scared DCs and dictated coverage to open things up for our running game and short passing game. You kind of check both boxes with Waller, although I'll admit that calling him a #1 WR is a stretch. However, he can attack all 3 levels like a number one WR and there probably isn't a better vertical seam threat in football *when healthy. You needed that guy this year too, Jones is still under evaluation with that 2nd year out and Waller is a big step towards getting that information.

I also don't think people realized how shitty the Giants options were in achieving that goal of improving the pass catchers. UFA WR market was garbage. The draft is ok at WR, but not one you should feel comfortable heading into naked with a desperate need at the position. Especially since they're almost all realistically complimentary types. Trade market not as robust in years past as the options are really old in Hopkins or in that high end WR2 market in Jeudy. Hopkins is the easy solution and I don't think the draft comp is the issue, the new contract he'd want would be. This is a cleaner solution. In my book, Schoen gets high marks for creativity here.

I don't know about that. The Waller trade is much more of a "win now" type of trade than the "rebuild mode" variety (albeit for the cost of only a 3rd round comp pick).

I think they have their sights set firmly on the Super Bowl. Unlike the manic Gettleman, Schoen will take a measured approach (meaning aggressive, but not reckless). And this explains (to me at least) the extension they gave Jones when they had plenty enough cap room to tag him. Even if they believed in Jones, the tag seemed the more prudent approach.
