I’m kinda thinking we did Ok but I feel disappointed if that makes any sense.
Okerakee seems like a good signing but to me seems like a bit of an overpay.
The DT was needed. I don’t know much about him but he looks like a good run stuffer. Not a guy I was thinking of but fills a need.
Waller is a good gamble. He’s been injured but if healthy can be a home run. A 3rd seems like an OK gamble so we will see.
I do think the guys we resigned were no brainers.
I’m not disappointed we lost Gates. I wish him well but it seems like an overpay.
We still have a long way to go to close the gap on Dallas and the Eagles.
I guess I’m indifferent right now. I really wanted a C and don’t want Feliciano back. I wanted a WR but it’s a really weak FA class. Maybe we can get an upgrade at Sor at least bring Love back.
Waller is the exact type of trade i expected/wanted just not a player i considered. a little more injury trouble than id have preferred.
i dont know anything about the DL they signed but i do think that was a big need.
there's more to do and i expect we'll see more done. i think they made their 2 biggest moves but i think we'll see another WR and some depth players added. hopefully love back. think we'll see some extensions too but that could be later this offseason.
The Waller trade came out of nowhere. But when you really look at it the on paper aspect is pretty genius. He has no dead cap money on his deal after 2023 so it’s essentially a one year deal with an option for three more years from a Giants perspective.
I don’t know much about the DT from Tampa, but from what I have read he is a good locker room guy, plays with intensity and can defend the run and apply some pressure.
The only thing they haven’t done yet is get a receiver. If they find a way to trade for a solid WR it would open up the entire draft to go BPA.
I think Schoen knows he needs another strong draft, probably two, and seasoning to get where they want to be.
Other minor deals for needed depth.
We overpaid a bit for the LB but it fits Our team needs perfectly
What is your hesitation about?
We made no SPLASH moves but hooray for that
We have too many holes to fill
And 2 fewer holes now than 48 hours ago
We can now focus on WR,CB,IOL
in the early rounds of the draft
Giants more likely then not are targeting WR in draft.
Center is a possible need but I liked JF and you can find that in the draft as well.
Also its day 2.
Waller was a big move for a 3rd rounder - not cheap, but quality will cost. But unless they re-do his contract, Waller can be let go at the end of the season if he does not pan out with little cost or dead money.
They desperately needed a quality ILB - they got him. They needed a run stuffing DT/NT to spell Leo and Dex, got him. Maybe all three are slight overpays, IDK.
Perhaps Schoen is looking for a starting WR - sounds like he is. Patience. You are complaining about the costs of the guys they gathered today. What do you think a #1a or #1b WR will cost?
He has a well thought out plan. He has many holes to plug. They should get more competitive, but they are not likely to move to the top of the heap in one FA period. What they acquire now, will tell you where he will turn to in the draft.
I am actually surprised that he did as much as he did the past two days. Thought he'd be sniffing around the 2nd level FAs next week.
Nacho's highlight tape showed me what he can do. Obviously he doesn't have highlight plays all that often or he would have more staying power. But sometimes IDL is the guy that you don't retain if he's not a stud. This could turn out to be a terrific depth signing.
Waller is exciting because of some of the things he has done in the past. I am cautious with my excitement but I like what I think the Giants are thinking here.
I also agree that a bit of a premium has been paid but the premiums are being paid on traditionally lower $ positions... So the overpays are a little less egregious.
Waller is probably going to see more targets then anyone currently on the roster. Love the match up explotation potwntial of having him on the field with Hoggins, Bellinger, Robinson and Sheppard let alone of we can draft an electric player, also the size help us take a chance on a smaller WR like Flowers and not force a big reciever.
We need an electric WR or 2 come draft day.
Signing a quality LB give us a chance to draft an impact DL and not rulling out another edge guy. Looking harder at Ojulari, Smith and Foskey now.
Wonder if we can get a Cheap vet DE to help the run game while Dex geta rest and then rotate 3 young edge players
Then we plugged in one of the best available ILB which was a major need for us. Depth at DT which was a major need. A huge weapon in Waller for this offense. We still have plenty of moves to make and the draft. Just by these moves we improved our run Defense and coverage and improved our offense.
Lets also look that Philly is not getting better, Washington is starting Howell at QB, and Dallas is losing players while only adding a good CB who also happens to be 33 in the new season. I would say we have so far made the most improvements while the other teams have stepped back.
Future is bright!
Waller has no risk though...if he doesn't work out, you cut him and all you lose is pick 100. No financial burden whatsoever.
Restructure Williams
Restructure Jackson
Extend Dex
Those moves along with releasing Golladay will allow for an additional move in FA.
Spending on inside linebackers isn't really a good cap strategy. Okereke is a good player, but stopping the run really starts up front with gap-eating DTs.

Remember, he can cover too. We haven't had that in awhile.

I think Edwards overrated playing behind Philly dline.
As a team that had around 8-9 holes after the season, we are starting to close the gap. This is not a 1 yr thing. But I believe we should fill a few more with draft , trade or FA . We won’t get all the way there.
Player development is more important than March offseason shopping.

because it's high reward with moderate risk.

+1. Finding linebackers who can cover is like finding hen's teeth for the Giants.
If they can pull that off this team will have drastically reduced it's biggest weaknesses from last year heading into next season.

I don’t think it’s much of an overpay ( if at all). Dude just hitting his stride, has been healthy. I would think he can be a more athletic Martinez. Hopefully. A Pierce level. Possible j Davis shows enough to be ok as 2nd ILB. Or , since we are due some luck, beavers is basically 100% and he was actually a find who will win the starters job and be better than average.

Exactly! When was the last time we had a linebacker that has the skillset Okereke brings. I think we sometimes forget how bad our linebackers have been. Plus he is only 26 and is an ascending player. This notion that linebackers shouldn't be valued anymore is total bunk.
We need WR
THey cant go into season counting on davidson being 3rd DT they may be high on him but he may not be ready in sept (should be but who knows) he is the type of guy who you hope is 3rd DT but may be needed to be eased in same with beavers at ILB he may be the 2nd guy but you cant take that risk

but the Nunez-Roches one concerns me. Given what Nunez-Roches is good at (stuffing the run and doesn't offer much as an inside pass-rusher), this could mean that DJ Davidson isn't completely back from his injury and I don't see either player as a backup to Leonard Williams.

I can understand that. However, it does concern me that there doesn't appear to be an option should Leonard Williams get hurt (and he was last year). Unless the Giants re-sign Nick Williams or if they're weighing prospects in the draft, the closest guy would be Ryder Anderson and he's nearly 30lbs lighter than Williams.

Wouldn’t nunez be first guy in for both Leo and dex? Think he moves around the line often. Would also not be surprised if we draft a developmental guy, similar to Davidson. Mid rd with some upside if he improves
Re-signing Gillian, and Shepard, and to me to some extent Breida to ‘prove it’ contracts was well done, as was the NT’s.
The key now are the LW and AJ contracts.
The Okereke get was excellent, and the Waller trade gives both onfield talent, and a vet for Bellinger to bounce off of.
Was hoping they got Bradbury from Minnesota to solidify the C spot on the OL, but that likely now gets filled in the draft, since the top 3 FAs are off the market.
I don’t know who else they may sign in FA, but I believe they will still draft LB, TE, and DT, besides WR.
Given the hand dealt them, I AM impressed with what has been done, and still owning all but the #100 pick.
- love the Okereke signing but we should still draft another ILB
- who is playing Center? Do we address that now or in the draft?
- is Josh Ezeudu our Left Guard or do we add someone there?
- I know he is older but why not add Calais Campbell? He’s familiar with Wink’s system and paired alongside Dex and Leo they would be a tough front for anyone.
- lastly… OBJ, just do it. Get DJ another weapon. He’s better than every option out there at WR in the free agent market and he wants to play here, if they can work a deal I would love to see it happen
Overall, I would say happy and hopeful, but hesitant as well.
I think some mistake the overachieving success last season as the norm where in reality last season was supposed to be a roster dump and fix the cap by taking our lumps last year. They hit a home run with the staff and the team overachieved by a lot. This year imo we should improve even if the record regresses a little with a much harder schedule. Hit this draft out of the park and another solid off-season we should enter the season as legit contenders and possibly be one of the favorites by the end.
But none of this matters unless they can get a grasp of this beyond rediculous injury situation. This should be top priority and price should be irrelevant. Anything else would be like going grocery shopping and deciding toilet paper is where you want to cut the budget.
Satisfied? We’re not done yet
Waller could be more than a home run. Maybe a walk off homer. But his injury history worries me. We've been historically the most injured team is the last 10 years.Looks like pretty friendly salary/cap hit. B Only because of injury history.
Smart and tough.. Lets hope he stay injury free so he can be dependable.
Nacho - where did he get that name. We did have Snacks so...
As soon as Leo and Dex needed a break the D-line was horrible. He should be able to shore up the front and be a good rotational player. C+ Not a starter by any means but should be good depth. Definitely tough should be smart and dependable.
Bit surprised we've not went for a CB, currently we seem a bit light on experience there, but the CB market seems a little stuck. Perhaps Bradberry's resign etc will kick it into gear.
Waller has four years and $52.5 million remaining on his contract. His $11 million salary this year is the only guarantee the Giants inherit. Waller will count $12.4 million on the Giants’ cap, per OverTheCap.com. The Giants do have the ability to convert Waller’s base salary to signing bonus, spreading out the cap hit over those remaining four years, if they wish to create more cap space for this year.
It reminds me a lot of the 2005 off-season. The talk of the 3-4 year rebuild of last year is no longer the case. Speaking of which, has anyone heard from M.S.? I hope he’s well. He was the leader of the “4 year rebuild” brigade.
