Won the CAA regular season. Thankfully CofC got the auto bid for winning the tourney though. Hofstra can score it really well, plus the NIT means something to those mid majors
Hofstra is one of the best mid-major programs in the country - and they're local. 58th in the RPI this year, they have multiple ranked wins since Speedy Claxton took over last season, have beat Arkansas, UCLA, and Florida State in the last few years (and were a few seconds away from beating Houston), and had 3 wins against NCAA tournament teams this season.
They also had the best player on the court (Estrada, two time conference player of the year - one with very good teams at the top) who the refs took out of the game.

I disagree, I think it was a terrible loss. Rutgers is a team that, rightly or wrongly, has big aspirations and was openly pissed at getting bounced by the NCAA. They are positioning themselves as a big time college program, and are recruiting this way. To lose in the first round to Hofstra, a school that many of the high school kids they are recruiting probably have never heard of, is a disaster. Hell even I can't name more than two of the teams in their conference (what's it called the CAA or something). My guess is the only people who don't think this is an embarrasing loss are Hofstra fans.
RU is playing them at home, and Hofstra’s best player was in foul trouble the entire 2nd half, and fouled out with 6 mins to go. RU can’t lose that game. So much for them deserving an NCAA bid. What a ridiculous loss. I don’t know what happened to Mulcahy, but he was absolutely brutal over the last month. Something was up in that locker room.

lack of knowledge about a program doesn't reflect on the quality of basketball they play.
FYI, Hofstra's RPI ranking is 58th and Rutgers is 89th.
The CAA has had two NCAA final four teams in the past, btw.
As a side note, this kind of reaction is why it's so hard for teams like Hofstra to schedule games. Nobody wants to play them because fans only care about the big conferences, and it's not an easy win because they're a good program.
A Big Ten team that many people argued should have made the real tourney lost as a #1 seed at home while blowing a 5 point lead with 30 seconds to go. That sounds like a pretty bad loss to me. Hofstra is a nice program but come on.

I stand by my comment. It is a big loss because the nationwide perception is that its terrible. Notice I said nothing about the Hofstra team in my comments. Its a bad loss because a Big Ten team with NCAA aspirations lost in the first round at home, in the NIT, to a team that not many have heard off. This is all factual. It will affect recruiting and the overall perception of the current RU program.
