The Giants WR/TE size has increased significantly

Jay on the Island : 3/15/2023 10:09 am
Going into last season there were many who were concerned about the lack of height at wide receiver.

The only WR's on the roster with above average size were Collin Johnson, Kenny Golladay, and David Sills. Johnson was reportedly having a great training camp and was destined to begin the season in the starting lineup until he tore his achilles tendon. We all know what Sills is at this point. The rest of the roster:
Wan'Dale Robinson 5'8
Sterling Shepard 5'10
Darius Slayton 6'1
Richie James 5'9

Fast forward a year and the Giants roster now:
Isaiah Hodgins 6'3
Collin Johnson 6'6
Darren Waller 6'6
Wan'Dale Robinson 5'8
Sterling Shepard 5'10

Where am I going with this? I think the Giants target a fast WR early with Zay Flowers being a legit target in round 1. They still desperately need a WR to stretch a defense and they won't find that in free agency.
I would say Collin Johnson coming off injury

should not be counted on here. We need more playmaker WR's with some size and Johnson is a lesser version of Hodgins.
Jay, is your point that the Giants still need to get bigger or that

The Giants are big enough and need to pick the WR who can best spread the field, regardless of size?

I was suggesting that they are more likely to target a small WR with great speed like Zay Flowers.
The need for speed

Is obvious. While he had his faults, Slayton was the speed guy - need a guy who can be vertical threat & replace that aspect.

I’m thinking Hardman or Flowers/Addison. Or Hyatt in r2.
Lets not drool over height and size

Can the guy separate? Can he catch? Can he run routes? And for gods sake, can he stay healthy? This team needs talent in the worst way. If there is a diminutive weapon in this draft (Flowers, Downs, Mims) that can tilt the field in the Giants' favor, get him a uniform. They need to keep the defenses honest. There has to be someone on the field that scares them. Right now, especially at WR, there is no one. Waller is a nice start and now they have to continue. If they can find a Megatron-type, by all means, sign em or draft em. If not, get the dude that moves the needle.
Don't forget Bellinger

Yes I expect Bellinger to take a big step forward this season especially since all the attention will go towards Waller.

This team needs more than one WR so I agree with those that want a WR early in the draft as well as a cheaper FA like Hardman. If DJ Chark is willing to sign another 1 year deal for $4-5 million then I would love to add him as well.

You also forgot that Lawrence Cager

is 6'5" at TE as well.

I didn't dive too deeply into the TE's because most are between 6'3 and 6'5. I discussed Waller because he is more of a WR than a traditional TE and he uses his height to his advantage. He is going to be a dangerous 3rd down and redzone weapon for Jones.
