Giants roster update, 10 a.m.

Expecting some more action today.

Looking for efficient signings maybe on the DL, WR or CB.
Need cap space
JonC : 3/15/2023 10:12 am : link
Figure Okereke roughly slots into Golladay's cap spot, figuratively, but they need contract re-do's, stat.

Stupid question...Is there a deadline to get under the cap by? Asking cause I figure LW, Dexter etc news should come asap?

I forget when the 2023 league year starts

you always need to be under the cap but it wont be an issue. they will hold moves before making them official until they make whatever counter moves.

i think there's a chance an adoree extension comes first because the john jones and bradberry deals both came in pretty reasonable with 13m and 20m guaranteed respectively. i think we will see him add some years on in return for similar guaranteed $. i also expect them to convert some of waller's $ into bonus to create another 5m or so in room.

Not worried about space
jvm52106 : 3/15/2023 10:27 am : link
as I believe the Giants have a plan overall for the cap.

Trade wise it will be interesting to see if we go after a lesser guy (pelt wise) or a more seasoned VET (Hopkins, Cooks, etc).
We need another DL!
BillT : 3/15/2023 10:30 am : link
Nunez-Roches Is a pure backup. And a decent one. However , we need another starting level DL. Demarcus Walker or Dean Lowry would be nice. Okereke won’t be worth it if he doesn’t get some help up front.
Corner market
GoDeep13 : 3/15/2023 10:34 am : link
Should see some names come off the board. Giants will be players. May get a depth signing at Safety. Names too watch

CB: Anthony Averett, Sean Murphy-Bunting, Tre Herndon, Greedy Williams, and Rock Ya-sin

S: Johnathan Abrams, Nasir Adderley, Jaquan Johnson.
I would think the next move is for a WR
Matt in SGS : 3/15/2023 10:35 am : link
I'm sure they will draft one in the 1st or 2nd round, but there are too many guys coming back from injury. So it's either a trade or sign one of the WRs out there, but they are kind of underwhelming.

I do wonder if they will pull that trigger on OBJ. He's the highest upside of the free agents and won't cost a draft pick to trade for or the comp formula. Also, if you listen to the Banks & Papa podcast, Banks was talking about it. I sometimes wonder if Carl lays some groundwork for the front office/coaches in his podcast to either send messages to players (getting on Tae Crowder last year, the year before was calling out Matt Peart, etc) or the fans for PR purposes. He's been waiving the flag to sign OBJ.
I would expect some contract adjustments
ZogZerg : 3/15/2023 10:35 am : link

I wouldn't expect ANY of the contracts
Dave on the UWS : 3/15/2023 10:37 am : link
the acquired players have to exist that way by day's end. Schoen will "massage" them to fit what the Giants want to do financially this year and next. He also has to make a final decision on Golladay: take all the medicine this year or spread it out over 2 seasons.
So some Cap machinations should be taking place.

Thanks Go Deep. I wonder if the Giants do sign Greedy, would that also be considered a 2 for 1 move in that the Giants would hope he helps smack his brother back into the right direction as a contributor and get more out of him along the way.

big johnson fan. wanted him in draft when they chose ballentine a few picks ahead of him. thank you gd13.

out of the corner group i think like murphy-bunting best, but averett played like the 2nd most man coverage snaps under wink in 2021. he'd be a good fit probably cheap bc he missed a lot of last year with a broken thumb.

not really in love with any of those guys, especially SMB. i feel like every bucs game i watched i thought that guy stunk. guess i'd lean towards greedy williams but i have no preference as long as they don't overpay and don't get SMB.

Beat me to the punch with this comment. I suspect they’ll draft more depth which is needed, maybe they sign a low end starter to compete with Beavers. Rest of the cap needs spending elsewhere.

Thanks. I was hoping the Giants would pick up a DB (or two) prior to the draft, even though it's a deep draft there. I just wish they'd pull the trigger on a DE, too.
Plus we're playing so many 3 safety looks
AcesUp : 3/15/2023 10:56 am : link
That pull an ILB off the field. It's overkill. Davis is fine as a depth or spot player, as long as he's not consistently logging tons of snaps every week. And you have a guy last year in Beavers that the staff was excited about. The 2nd ILB isn't going to be getting tons of snaps week to week.

I think CB, WR and DL depth still on table
AcesUp : 3/15/2023 10:58 am : link
Don't think you need to splurge but some vets to stabilize those units are needed. I'm hoping Calais doesn't retire and comes here on a cheap 1yr, can use an inside out guy that can factor vs. the pass.
Slay for the right price???
GiantBlue : 3/15/2023 11:01 am : link
He would look good out there opposite Adoree!
Don't forget
Carson53 : 3/15/2023 11:07 am : link
they re-signed Jarrad Davis as well at ILB.
I don't see them signing another one in free agency.
They have the new player from the Colts, Davis, Beavers and also the kid, McFadden? (regardless of what you think of him).
I could see a CB and/or a WR in some form or another...
They don't have that much to spend, just more than last year.
I don’t know what Rock Ya-Sin
illmatic : 3/15/2023 11:10 am : link
will cost but he would be a great CB to go with Adoree. I’d love to see them pull that off somehow.

While not quite Slay, Rock Ya has graded pretty well according to PFF in man coverage and has some size to complement the smaller Jackson on the opposite boundary.

I don't know what to expect from Beavers this year. Conventional wisdom says he'll need another year to fully recover from his ACL tear.

But they do still have Micah McFadden, and while he didn't exactly light it up as a rookie, neither did Bobby Okereke. There's still a chance, however slim, that he can develop into a serviceable LB.

PFF is not a perfect metric in all cases but often it is a useful baseline depending on the type of measurable.

Rocy Ya is young still and if Wink got guys like Moreau and McLoud playing above their pay grade, I think Sins skillset is something he can maximize too.

I could see Wyatt at 25 since we need someone to take top off D. Waller our red zone match up issue guy. Hodgins is a real nice move the chains, intermediate guy. Wandale would blend perfect in slot, hopefully mid yr.
Might still see a zadarius Thomas or Calais for front 7 ( winks guys). Can’t imagine either expensive. Maybe Marcus peters too
again, similar to the OL
Dave on the UWS : 3/15/2023 12:12 pm : link
you have to let young players develop. the only way that happens is to let them play. They drafted McFadden and Beavers last year. They thought enough of Beavers, they released Martinez and Beavers was going to start prior to injury. If he's healthy, he's in the mix next to Okereke.
continuing to draft players, without giving them the chance to develop is the same as flushing your draft picks down the drain!
They will redo Waller
Rudy5757 : 3/15/2023 12:57 pm : link
No way he plays on the $11 mil cap. They will probably redo LW and Dex to lower their cap. Sign Barkley to a more cap friendly deal. Extend Adoree.

Okereke will replace Golladay and we will be fine.

I see S and WR in the next day or 2. If Love doesn’t come off his number the Giants may make a splash at S. Payer looking to re-sign with Buffalo, that should help with decisions. I thing WR will be via trade because there is no one worth signing. Hoping one shakes loose today.
I think the Waller trade is a signal that the Giants
arniefez : 3/15/2023 1:14 pm : link
know there aren't many X receiver options in this draft and they plan to use Waller as their their X in 2023 and will look for a "separator" like Wan'Dale Robinson in either round 1 or 2 of the draft and the other pick will be a CB even if they sign a FA.

I hope the rest of the picks will be used for maybe another ILB starter, situational players on both sides of the ball and depth across all positions that can help the poor STs from 2022.

Carl Banks also talked a lot about bad rosters having bad STs because few teams will use their starters on STs. He said if the starters really should be backups, the backups probably wouldn't be on the roster of a good team.

I think the Giants STs need a big upgrade except the kicker.

dpinzow : 3/15/2023 6:33 pm : link
There's been virtually zero market for him and I think he could be had for a 4th round pick. Randy Moss was traded to the Patriots for a 4th round pick back in the day. I see the Cardinals completely blowing it up this year with Murray injured.

There's only two years left on his deal and similar to Waller, the Giants could probably get out after one year if they acquired him and it didn't work out
