Justin Pugh Firing Shots on Twitter

Reeses Pieces : 3/15/2023 10:25 am
“Loved my time in NY. I’d want to play LG and I’d want fair market value. I’m worth way more than minimum. I don’t need to sign tomorrow. (I would for the right deal). I have ACL recovery plus when teams realize that rookie they drafted can’t pass protect I’ll have more value!”

I dont love Justin Pugh necessarily...but is this really firing shots? Sounds like a standard thought process of an NFL vet.
I don't see the need to bring him back
Matt in SGS : 3/15/2023 10:30 am : link
but I didn't read it as him taking shots at anyone. Basically he's saying he knows that with his ACL, no one is going to give him a deal more than the minimum, but when camp starts and the rookies who were drafted struggle (and injuries happen), teams will come calling and sign him. If you watched last year, with a guy like Duane Brown for the Jets, he'll probably end up being right. Just not with the Giants (I hope).

over what we have now, the issue is, and always been, can he stay on the field. And that is in no way is worth the risk of what he's asking for.

Could be read as a jab at Josh Ezeudu.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/15/2023 10:37 am : link
Not a rookie this year, but he's the presumptive LG and his pass blocking was an issue when he was pressed into service in 2022.

Bringing in a rehabbing vet like Pugh to set a floor under the position for the latter part of the season would be fine. I just wouldn't want it to be Justin Pugh.
Don’t see it as firing shots
10thAve : 3/15/2023 10:40 am : link
But I do see it as someone who would be a pain in the locker room regarding a team’s culture.
Ugh

This is a flashback to the days where we had a shit team and a bunch of high draft picks who liked to hear themselves talk.

No thanks on this guy.
who?

This is called taking shots. He says what every vet says who is waiting it out. He was not a bad player at all here, just couldn’t stay healthy
Really don’t have issue with that tweet

He was being transparent with a fan. But it is an example of Pugh loving to talk.

guys like Pugh start to ease on down the road to an early retirement. It's a tough business.

allstarjim : 3/15/2023 11:00 am : link
He says his value is more than the vet minimum. I don't think someone in his position should feel differently about himself. He tore an ACL last October, so obviously teams are going to factor that into his market value. But prior to that, he allowed 0 sacks and 0 penalties on 263 snaps.

He's been a better OG than he was a OT. PFF gave him a 61 grade for his work last year, which is I believe isn't bad. I believe a 50 grade is perfectly average, so 61 is above average, but not elite.

I don't see what there is to be outraged about.

I highly doubt he even knows who the Giants have playing guard.

And a guy at his age and with his injury history can think whatever he wants, but the idea that an NFL team is going to pay an aging, average guard coming off an ACL injury way more than the minimum is kind of ridiculous.
Someone asked him if he'd come back to the Giants for vet min

He said no - he'd rather wait for more money and he wants to play LG

Big Blue Blogger : 3/15/2023 11:14 am : link
Disagree about him knowing the team's situation at left guard. There are only 32 NFL starting left guard jobs, and he's a very career-conscious professional. I'd be surprised if he and his agent haven't surveyed the league to identify potential landing spots.
And he shows a humble side when asked about going to the Bears...

Reese didn't screw up. Look at all the 3rd round picks he made. Let alone very few 2nd contracts with the Giant and the one he did JPP blew off part of his hand.

The problem
Lines of Scrimmage : 3/15/2023 12:15 pm : link
was the OL was on its last rights in 2011. Picks prior to that on the OL did not work out and then the later draft picks in 2012 were the same. Then you had desperation so it became a huge need. Hence Pugh, Richburg and Flowers. All premium picks. Should have been ready for that demise of the OL.

Two fold problem. The OL remained poor and using all those premium picks did not allow them to address D which also fell off a cliff. Hence the 2016 spending spree.

Totally inept front office.
Not firing shots but
lugnut : 3/15/2023 12:38 pm : link
Recovering from ACL, latest in long story of dings and injuries, and accelerating rate of IR listings. But yes, teams will be lining up for you around your 33rd birthday (Aug 15) to have you play the position YOU want to play, at far above vet minimum. Dude…

At least Schoen doesn’t pull this nonsense. Whoever they draft is someone Schoen will have spoken with; it’s well known that the Giants asked Thibs some tough questions

Seriously. He wasn't talking about the Giants and their hypothetical rookie lineman (or last year's rookie), but mentioned "teams" in general - basically saying all he needs is one team to find themselves desperate enough to pay more later on as reason why he shouldn't settle for a vet minimum contract with the Giants or any other team early in the process.

Makes sense IMHO, and certainly isn't anything to take offense at.
It may not be firing shots

He had one good season w the Giants . Another bad Reese pick.
The Reese/Ross
Lines of Scrimmage : 3/16/2023 7:38 am : link
tandem did great damage to this franchise. Destroyed the strong fronts put together by EA/TC.

Such a shame the back end of two great Giants and future HOF's had to suffer from those 2011-17 drafts that even started to go downhill before that.

People still wonder why Jerry can't get a GM job and Ross doesn't even work in the NFL.
