According to spotrac he would count $21 million in dead money if he's released with the Eagles saving $4.8 million in cap space.

now Bradberry is going to be a CB1--let's see how that works out for them. It was all good when you had a CB 1 playing zone against the second WR, now BRadberry is going to be forced to be a CB 1 and matchup against the best and he is not an elite CB1.
talks shit all year about the giants cutting Bradberry for cap space..

Dude he's cooked. Howie and the Eagles know it...he's a classic example of a guy who gets accolades because of his name and past accomplishments.

He is still a decent player, but definitely not a shut down corner. You will get better production from a young guy. Hard hard hard pass.
I have questions for the cap guys
Essex : 3/15/2023 11:05 am : link
sports rac has his 2023 dead cap hit as 21 million. Why would they just cut him--don't they have to eat that? I am really far from a cap guy, but I thought dead cap cannot be moved--so what is the incentive to just cut him (to save 5 million from the original 26 mill hit?).

But arent they eating 21 million. He has to be really cooked for that. But again, I am not a cap guy so not sure the dead money cap hit is what I think it is.

The Eagles view $5M in cap space more valuable than Slay.

Dead cap is a sunk cost, it's not recoverable so the equation and decision about cutting a player with dead space usually boils down to cap savings vs keeping the player and if the Eagles release Slay it means they value $5M in cap space (assuming that is what they save by cutting him) more valuable than an on-field Darius Slay.

He was elite for us in 2020 and pretty good in 2021, and was elite for the Eagles last year. He's a great corner. 13 INTs over the last 4 seasons, career low in yards per target last season with 4.4, with a QB rating against of 51.6 (also career low), and allowed only 2 TDs.

He was outstanding. And contrary to what people believe here, he was terrific in man coverage last year as well, with a 46.9 QB rating against when in man coverage, meaning he was even better in man than zone.

They could be targeting a CB with the #10 overall pick (Gonzalez? Porter? Witherspoon?). And I'd rather see them go CB with the pick than RB Bijan Robinson (with Miles Sanders on the way out, they are thin at RB and I would expect them to use an early pick on the position).
as a june 1 cut he saves them a lot more by spreading out the hits

otc says he saves them 17.5m this year.

jason fitzgerald says to get under the cap now though they will still need to restructure lane johnson.

roseman is a great gm but once they extend hurts they are going to start losing players at a more accelerated rate.

so they can basically spread out his 21 million dead cap hit?
It's kind of interesting
AcesUp : 3/15/2023 11:16 am : link
As we're in the same position with Leonard Williams as the eagles were with Slay. Not apples to apples as LW is a little younger but they renogatiated with him enough to where the cap number and guarantee so high that it made an extension difficult when factoring in age. Kind of how we are with LW. Not saying that he'll be cut but it's a likelier outcome than I thought. Still assume we tack on void year to spread it out and buy a year before shopping/cutting if we can't figure out a new money solution, but it's a little more likely than I gave it credit for.

Didnt they sign Penny? I know he can't be relied on because of injury issues, but when healthy that guy is a monster RB. I also think Gainwell is pretty good.

Between the Eagles backloading approach and the Saints backloading approach. The Saints would just continue re-doing this deal into oblivion. Eagles backload and then periodically take some medicine.

The Eagles haven't paid Hurts yet. When they do they will be in big trouble. Say goodbye to Lane Johnson, Kelce, Graham, etc.
Another smart move...

Great perspective on JB. Supposedly, he played with a bad wheel his 2nd year here. Eagles recognized that and kept the 'cheaper' of the 2 it seems.

Would be great though to get Slay here as a beautiful ironic twist of events from last year.

Bradberry was terrible here his second year. He went up against McLaurin and got torched on that Thursday night game. I think Cee Dee Lamnb beat him. He did not do well. Whether that is for injury or not, I do not view him as an elite corner.

yes - he had a variety of void years in there so otc has them spreading the dead$ hits out over 4 years.

eagles now down 4 starters from their d including hargrave who was perhaps their best defender and slay who was perhaps their best cb, and thats before paying hurts.

Darius Slay repeatedly mocked the Giants this past season for letting James Bradberry go for cap reasons, allowing him to land with Eagles.

Now the Eagles are doing similar with Slay.

Kinda crazy how that happens.

Giants could use help at CB.

For perspective, both deals are for less than what the Giants gave Breida. I have no doubt the Eagles will be targeting RB's in the draft; Penny, Scott, and Gainwell give them a RBBC if they miss on their targets.

This is going to be brutal for them next year. A ton of their players get huge raises next year. AJ Brown, Goedart, Hurts, etc. They already had little cap space next year and they shrunk it more. Don't see philly lasting unless they really nail their draft picks.

depending on price he'd be a good add. he graded out just as good as bradberry last year but more often shadowed other team's top guys. against justin jefferson he got dpow.

Quote:
Slay earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors after he recorded a career-high five passes defended along with two interceptions in

In the matchup, Slay held Jefferson to five catches for 43 yards receiving on 11 targets with 2:38 seconds left in the ball game.

He became the first player since 2019 (Pierre Desir) to record five passes defended and two interceptions in a single game, and it’s the fifth time Slay has won the honor.
They save $17MM by cutting him
mfjmfj : 3/15/2023 11:40 am : link
No positive impact this year because they have used his contract to push money into the future and it all comes back. All that really matters is the incremental dollars you are paying not the year in which the dollars hit. If they need that $17MM this year, they can just move someone else's money to the future. They decided he was not worth $17MM. The rest is noise.

But arent they eating 21 million. He has to be really cooked for that. But again, I am not a cap guy so not sure the dead money cap hit is what I think it is.

The dead money (now spread over 2023 and 2024 with a 6/1 designation) is a sunk cost. The acceleration to amortized bonus is what stings, but that's just accounting - they were going to have to recognize the bonus money sooner or later anyway. It's not a matter of him being cooked or not when deciding to release him, it's simply a matter of finding contracts that can create necessary cap space just to come into compliance before the start of the new league year.

The Eagles heavily leveraged themselves to capitalize on an opportunity to contend during Hurts's rookie contract window, and have had to make painful cap decisions this offseason as a result. I'm guessing the Eagles originally saw this offseason as an inflection point regardless of how it played out - if Hurts was bad last season, they'd be looking to bottom out this offseason, and if he was good (which he was), they'd need to start clearing space for his impending contract anyway.

All things equal, I don't think the Eagles would have chosen to cut Slay; they were just desperate for cap room this year because they had to get their 2023 cap in order by 4pm today.
Or not? Per Josina
No1MDGiantsFan : 3/15/2023 9:21 pm : link
“ From what I'm hearing per source, it sounds like the #Eagles are having a hard time letting go of CB Darius Slay at this moment, & still wish they could keep him. Let's see if GM Howie Roseman can find another rabbit in his hat--so to speak. No matter what, it's a worthy attempt.”
