Philadelphia has $54.7 million in dead cap this season?!?

Vin_Cuccs : 3/15/2023 12:09 pm
Capologists please help me understand: I saw online that Philadelphia has had/will now have, a minimum of $40 million in dead cap space for the next 4 years (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024)....is that correct?

This includes a whopping $54.7 million in dead cap this season!

At some point, that has to come back and haunt Roseman and the Eagles...right?

Help me understand how they will be able to operate at all...and somehow they are going to extend Jalen Hurts?
Howie Roseman was the best GM in the NFL last season

Dead cap….
They are in deep shit
Jay on the Island : 3/15/2023 12:12 pm : link
once they extend Hurts. All those fans who were calling him Roseman a genius as if he built a roster that would dominate for the next 5+ years. The Eagles went all in last season and restructured numerous contracts.

How long before we hear about Hurts being upset that he hasn't received an extension. Imagine your franchise hyping you up as the "real MVP" and then they go ahead and force you to play through the final year of your rookie 2nd round contract.
They went all in…

last year to win it all. Now they have to pay the piper. Sucks for them. Shitheads.
The problem with Philly is they know how to tare it down

and build it right back up. Minimum down time
They had a ton of void years in their contracts
BillT : 3/15/2023 12:16 pm : link
Got to pay that sooner or later.

They know how to do that when other teams throw picks at them for their trash. I am hoping that their inability to trade Slay shows that ride is over.
every player on the list of dead $ below is someone they restructured
Eric on Li : 3/15/2023 12:18 pm : link
in the past by converting base salary from that season into signing bonus money that gets spread to future years (or void years) aka kicking the can down the road.

they are currently continuing to kick money down the road to future years with darius slay being designated a june 1 cut, and likely restructures of their other remaining expensive players like lane johnson. those will be the names on next year's dead $ list.

continuing the cycle of manipulating the cap despite dead money is doable, it's rumored they are about to extend cjg, but you will eventually start losing players like they have already with hargrave, edwards, slay, and white. paying hurts will make it even harder.

they are going to get 4 comp picks this year so they are going to have to start drafting really well to backfill. if they dont or if hurts ends up tanking that's when the music will stop, things will get bad enough for some level of regime change, and a new cycle will begin.

And I would argue drafting is not their strong suit. They are much better at trades and free agency. Their drafting is average.
They
Amtoft : 3/15/2023 12:20 pm : link
really need to hit on these next two draft picks. You think they are in bad shape this year in cap... Next year is going to be even worse. They won't be the same team as they are losing big time players. Slay was a stud for them, 11 sack DT gone, Cox gone, Best LB gone, etc
They will remain competative
Lines of Scrimmage : 3/15/2023 12:22 pm : link
They continuously invest effectively in both fronts. This used to be the Giants way of doing business when Young came in up until about 2010.

It's not a coincidence that they have had our number. Same with Dallas.

I think they made a good bet to go for it. Look at how close they got.
That number will only

Increase when the Darius Slay is released today. LOL. They’ll probably still be the NFC East favorite though.

the Quarterbacks making more than Jalen Hurts for the 2023 season:
Taylor Heinicke
Mike White
Andy Dalton
Jarrett Stidham
Sam Darnold
Baker Mayfield
Jimmy Garoppolo
Zach Wilson
Trey Lance
Jameis Winston
Mac Jones
Mitchell Trubisky
Tyrod Taylor
Colt McCoy
Drew Lock
Casey Keenum
Teddy Bridgwater
Historically they've...
Ryan : 3/15/2023 12:29 pm : link
...been able to pull it off because they've pushed money on guys that have had long, healthy and productive careers for them - which in a lot of ways is blind luck.

They're adding another $22M (to save $3.7M) in dead cap now that they're cutting Slay sp that number will go to $77M assuming they don't designate post 6/1

That's true. They were right on the brink of winning the big prize.

Look, the key is Hurts. If he's truly an elite, franchise QB - a force multiplier - than Philly should be in decent shape to stay very competitive.

But that's still a very big TBD, IMV. I'd still be very cautious handing him big dollars. Just as much as 2022 could be the start of something great for Hurts, it could also be a one-hit wonder season...

good coach, excellent QB, excellent WRs, excellent o-line. they have 2 first round picks this year. they will figure out a way to keep that offense in tact with the cap.

with that offense they will be a super bowl contender for years
yet somehow they are going to resign
Essex : 3/15/2023 12:36 pm : link
Chauncey Gardner Johnson according to their beat reporters. It is like they have this immovable object but always move it somehow

It certainly helped them. Graham '11, Kelce '12, Johnson '13 and Cox '12.
Eagles
Archer : 3/15/2023 12:40 pm : link
The Eagles are up against it.

Of their top 18 players only three can be dropped to save money against the CAP. Most have been extended at least once or have back loaded contracts.
One is Slay and the other Hurts. Watkins is the third.

Their four highest salary CAP players are
Kelce, Graham, Johnston, and Slay with the youngest Slay at 32.

That is amazing in itself but the Eagles only have $44,123,864 in CAP space for next year.

If the Eagles resign Hurts to a new contract they will be digging a deeper hole.

Not only do they have a lot of dead money
Rudy5757 : 3/15/2023 12:42 pm : link
They are a very old team. They have been successful because they drafted well and got a lot of mileage from late round picks. But if you look at some of the more recent drafts it’s not that great. Jalen Hurts is getting paid peanuts this season. If they extend him it will be to give him money now to keep him happy but his cap number will be low for a few seasons.

Their dead cap will go up by $8 mil tomorrow when they cut Slay.

Their top players are old, I’m thinking they are going to be in major decline as a team the next few seasons. I hope they sign Hurts this season because he won’t have the same type of season next year.

Lane Johnson 33 on the books for 6 more years
Kelce 36 on the books for 5 years
Graham 35 on the books for 5 more years

These guys already have a lot of built in dead cap with void years. They just did it with Bradberry.

They may actually have to trade one of their 1st round picks because they can’t afford it. They went for it this season and now they are going to pay the price. They will not be close to where they were talent wise this season.
Fuck ‘em

Do you know how much the Giants had in dead cap in 2022?
cosmicj : 3/15/2023 12:47 pm : link
$54mm. That’s the handicap under which the whole team operated.

Thanks Dave.
They won't be as good next year...
Amtoft : 3/15/2023 12:47 pm : link
You can't lose your Starting OG, an OT that played for you, Starting RB, Both starting DTs (that is an incredible 18 sacks from the DT position), your best LB, Another good LB, your pro bowl CB, Your starting FS... who have they added that wasn't on last years team?

Their skill position players on offense

will still make them dangerous, but as the OL weakens, I don't see Hurts being nearly as effective. His stats when rushed aren't great and that will only get worse.

unfortunately, this is true. They will be in many games because their offense can be unstoppable at times.

How exactly are the next 4 years 21, 22, 23 and 24? Did you time travel? And if you're talking about the real next 4 years: 23, 24, 25 and 26, no one can possibly know how much dead cap there is in 25 and 26 since it depends on who gets cut in 24 and 25.

Eagles know how to get comp picks and picks thru trades
Vanzetti : 3/16/2023 1:44 am : link
For comp picks, they pencil in down years where they let FAs walk and do not sign any of their own.

They also sign shorter contracts so guys will play out the contract. In contrast, Giants are forever signing guys to longer contracts so they can spread the signing bonus over more years. But then guys wind up getting cut rather than playing out their contracts.
Like a lot of debt...
Dan in the Springs : 3/16/2023 9:26 am : link
it looks really bad in low inflationary times, and much less so in higher ones.

The cap is currently projected to be $260MM according to the linked article.

Here's a question - when does the NFL cap hit $200MM? When will it hit $300MM? There are some new revenue streams coming and one thing the commish is good at is raising revenues.

That's why I'm not so sure the smarter idea isn't to leverage future discounted dollars today.
