Capologists please help me understand: I saw online that Philadelphia has had/will now have, a minimum of $40 million in dead cap space for the next 4 years (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024)....is that correct?
This includes a whopping $54.7 million in dead cap this season!
At some point, that has to come back and haunt Roseman and the Eagles...right?
Help me understand how they will be able to operate at all...and somehow they are going to extend Jalen Hurts?
How long before we hear about Hurts being upset that he hasn't received an extension. Imagine your franchise hyping you up as the "real MVP" and then they go ahead and force you to play through the final year of your rookie 2nd round contract.
They know how to do that when other teams throw picks at them for their trash. I am hoping that their inability to trade Slay shows that ride is over.
they are currently continuing to kick money down the road to future years with darius slay being designated a june 1 cut, and likely restructures of their other remaining expensive players like lane johnson. those will be the names on next year's dead $ list.
continuing the cycle of manipulating the cap despite dead money is doable, it's rumored they are about to extend cjg, but you will eventually start losing players like they have already with hargrave, edwards, slay, and white. paying hurts will make it even harder.
they are going to get 4 comp picks this year so they are going to have to start drafting really well to backfill. if they dont or if hurts ends up tanking that's when the music will stop, things will get bad enough for some level of regime change, and a new cycle will begin.

And I would argue drafting is not their strong suit. They are much better at trades and free agency. Their drafting is average.
It's not a coincidence that they have had our number. Same with Dallas.
I think they made a good bet to go for it. Look at how close they got.
Taylor Heinicke
Mike White
Andy Dalton
Jarrett Stidham
Sam Darnold
Baker Mayfield
Jimmy Garoppolo
Zach Wilson
Trey Lance
Jameis Winston
Mac Jones
Mitchell Trubisky
Tyrod Taylor
Colt McCoy
Drew Lock
Casey Keenum
Teddy Bridgwater
They're adding another $22M (to save $3.7M) in dead cap now that they're cutting Slay sp that number will go to $77M assuming they don't designate post 6/1

That's true. They were right on the brink of winning the big prize.
Look, the key is Hurts. If he's truly an elite, franchise QB - a force multiplier - than Philly should be in decent shape to stay very competitive.
But that's still a very big TBD, IMV. I'd still be very cautious handing him big dollars. Just as much as 2022 could be the start of something great for Hurts, it could also be a one-hit wonder season...
with that offense they will be a super bowl contender for years
It certainly helped them. Graham '11, Kelce '12, Johnson '13 and Cox '12.
Of their top 18 players only three can be dropped to save money against the CAP. Most have been extended at least once or have back loaded contracts.
One is Slay and the other Hurts. Watkins is the third.
Their four highest salary CAP players are
Kelce, Graham, Johnston, and Slay with the youngest Slay at 32.
That is amazing in itself but the Eagles only have $44,123,864 in CAP space for next year.
If the Eagles resign Hurts to a new contract they will be digging a deeper hole.

Their dead cap will go up by $8 mil tomorrow when they cut Slay.
Their top players are old, I’m thinking they are going to be in major decline as a team the next few seasons. I hope they sign Hurts this season because he won’t have the same type of season next year.
Lane Johnson 33 on the books for 6 more years
Kelce 36 on the books for 5 years
Graham 35 on the books for 5 more years
These guys already have a lot of built in dead cap with void years. They just did it with Bradberry.
They may actually have to trade one of their 1st round picks because they can’t afford it. They went for it this season and now they are going to pay the price. They will not be close to where they were talent wise this season.
Thanks Dave.
Their dirtbag fans deserve nothing less.
Thanks Dave.
Thats the point they will have to strip the team down and start over
unfortunately, this is true. They will be in many games because their offense can be unstoppable at times.
They also sign shorter contracts so guys will play out the contract. In contrast, Giants are forever signing guys to longer contracts so they can spread the signing bonus over more years. But then guys wind up getting cut rather than playing out their contracts.
The cap is currently projected to be $260MM according to the linked article.
Here's a question - when does the NFL cap hit $200MM? When will it hit $300MM? There are some new revenue streams coming and one thing the commish is good at is raising revenues.
That's why I'm not so sure the smarter idea isn't to leverage future discounted dollars today.
