Gunner? camp body ?

according to NFL Draft Profile

Strengths

Blazing top end speed clocked at 4.34
Adequate route fundamentals for teams to work with
Drive phase features speed to threaten or uncover
Scouts were very impressed with his pro day workout
Plus short-area quickness
Can stutter and shake press corners for inside release
Explosive potential as jet sweep option
Has bend for crisp turns from break points
Contorts and stretches to haul in wayward throws
Capable passer for gadget plays

Weaknesses

Consistency and effort as run blocker is below average
Atrocious hands with 14 drops vs
48 catches over last two years
Focus and hand-eye coordination are lacking
Lacks confidence working in the middle of the field
Anticipates the footsteps
Below-average concentration catching near sideline
Wish he had better vision with ball in his hands
Will need to fine-tune sharpness of routes

think the Giants are going to sign a few WRs like this just because they're low cost veterans. The article linked by Pete in MD also says that he plays STs. This is more proof of how desperate we are for WRs, but it's still a better option than overpaying for a more well known FA WR.

An interesting
Y28 : 3/15/2023 10:40 pm : link
fact about Smith-

When he was a freshman at Boston College, he was actually the teams starting QB for 3 games.

During his career at BC, he threw several TD passes on trick plays.

Over $2.6MM, actually.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/15/2023 10:43 pm : link
Not tendering him was a no-brainer. It doesn’t mean the Jets had no interest in retaining him. You can only draw that inference with ERFAs, not RFAs.
He
Y28 : 3/15/2023 10:44 pm : link
only played in one game his rookie year. So he didn't qualify for that status.

Thus became a UFA (effective today after 4 pm) and chose the Giants.

you guys earlier today. You're not looking at the roster. We need to sign guys who will push players such as Marcus Johnson, David Sills, Jaydon Mickens, Makai Polk, and Kalil Pimpleton off of the roster.

Those are 5 of the 8 receivers currently under contract. Our WR room is that bad.

I have no problem with it

Vanzetti : 3/15/2023 11:37 pm : link
Especially with a guy like this who will have to excel on Specials to make the team.

But Waller ran a 4.46 at the combine at 255 lbs. Okereke ran a 4.58.

A complete different approach from DG, who seemed to take pleasure in finding guys who ran slow times just to prove his claim that 40 times don't matter.

My point here is this... the Jets didn't even tender Jeff Smith, but he's probably already the 4th or 5th best receiver on the team.

If we're fortunate, Smith struggles to make the squad. Because that means we added enough decent receivers.

I think we're all looking at the roster and can see the lack of talent in the WR's currently under contract. The question is what do we do about it? How, exactly, do we push the guys you listed off the roster? What makes the most sense, tactically, financially, short-term, long-term? It's not like we can snap our fingers and poof we have a whole new WR corps.

The sad fact is that the effects of the previous regime's incompetence are still being felt, and not just in the WR room - in every room. Last year's success notwithstanding, it may take another year before the Giants are truly competitive, a real match for the better teams in the league, especially those in their own division. They do need to be proactive, but also prudent. Knee-jerk reactions born out of desperation were the hallmarks of the recent past. We don't need more of the same.

Do what you can with what you have without hamstringing yourself, and make the most out of what you do have. If you can't sign or draft a prototypical 'X,' maybe you trade for one. Or, maybe, you get more talent at 'Y' and 'Z' and find ways to maximize their talents to compensate. Just get stronger where it's possible, where it makes the most sense.

Giants are trying to be honest with WR pool and really evaluate what they’d be getting at top of this FA market. As we’ve been saying it’s about fit, traits and price point.
Not going to splash the pot and pay WR2 talent/production expecting WR1 results if they can help it.

Always random when one of these signings happens early in free agency, but it's not like the Giants are paying him to be WR1.

4th/5th WR young enough to grow that can play ST an area we need to improve in. I think the timing is because he does not have to uproot his life (easy sale) ... he is a fringe player at the moment consistency is a perk when his agent is laying out the options.

None of the players you mentioned will hopefully be on the 53 this season. Maybe on the PS. And yet the Giants still haven't resigned James or Slayton, which shows that they're really not interested in either except as a last resort. Slayton apparently also only has one other offer, so maybe the rest of the league isn't that interested either. Not sure about James.
Smith

The draft profile re hands was from 4 years ago ... improvement is possible especially if he converted from QB. I’d be more interested if he had drops last year, especially key ones like our old #86 had vs the Vikes. Also ‘jet sweep’ potential to replace KT. This is a kick the tires signing.

signing at all. They've done a good job of finding players that help the team win. We all would enjoy a sexy move at WR, but as noted by Eric, we also really need depth. It would be nice to not be sniffing around other teams' practice squads to get credible depth like we were last year. A lot of work tob be done at all levels of this roster but especially the back half.

We all would be excited for the Giants to bring in someone we had on a fantasy team but lets let Schoen build the roster everywhere it needs improving too.

So he didn't qualify for that status.

Thus became a UFA (effective today after 4 pm) and chose the Giants.

Just to clarify, since the order of the posts was a bit confusing:

2022 was Smith's fourth NFL season. As Y28 notes, he did not earn a year of service in 2019, so with three years of service (2020-2022) he only qualified for RFA status in 2023. The Jets declined to tender him, as the cost would have been at least $2.6MM. In the absence of an RFA tender, he became a UFA yesterday, and was free to sign anywhere with no compensation or right of first refusal for the Jets.
NO ONE DID THAT
