Giants have interest in John Michael Schmitz

jeff57 : 3/16/2023 6:07 am
According to Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network

Quote:

During my pre-Combine mock draft, I had Schmitz being selected by the New York Giants with the 25th selection, and I can confirm the interest from Big Blue is real. There are several factors for this, but none more so than the fact the franchise made several heavy investments in skill players as well as quarterback Daniel Jones. Yet, at present, they do not have a starting center under contract.

He’ll be a 24 year old rookie.
Love him in

the 2-3 rounds. We need a OC, stat.
I said this weeks ago

If he’s as good as advertised he won’t make it to our 2nd round pick. I’d highly consider him at 25.
I've read the knock on him is that he's light and will get bull rushed

I feel like that is every good center lately. Doesn't it feel like that? They all seem to figure it out.

Don't have to go much farther than Jason Kelce. Was a converted skill position player.

My thoughts exactly
Not a fan…

Of a center in the 1st. There’s day 1 starters that we can get in round 4
I you take a center day 1
BillT : 3/16/2023 8:48 am : link
He has to be a dead certain Pro Bowler probably as a rookie. Think Travis Fredrick. Is this guy that?
You only get lucky with a round 4 starter
Chip : 3/16/2023 9:15 am : link
Round 2 for center there is the Ohio State center Wypler. I would consider Torrence in Rd 1. Not a fan of the WR who will be left at 25 which maybe a problem. The Giants should not reach for one.

^This.
I thought the Giants would re-sign Gates or Feliciano, but not both.
Klaatu : 3/16/2023 9:27 am : link
With Gates gone, I still think it's possible they'll eventually re-sign Feliciano. However, I also think that Center is Ben Bredesen's best position, and the Giants may feel the same way. Add to that he's younger and under contract for the next two years, so maybe re-signing Feliciano isn't in the cards. We'll see.

Now, I'd still like the Giants to draft a good Center prospect, but I doubt it happens early on...probably not in the 1st or 2nd rounds.
Really like Steve Avila of TCU
Rick in Dallas : 3/16/2023 9:27 am : link
330lb C/G who is a mauler in the run game.He looked good at Senior Bowl practices and probably available at number 57.
Joe Tippman from Wisconsin is a center who might be available in 3rd round.
Just some other possibilities at center for Giants to consider
I’m still hoping somehow JSN makes it to us at 25.
Really

And just to be clear if you actually read the piece its pretty clear that Pauline has diddly-squat evidence that the Giants actually have any interest in the player and he actually names several other teams that have shown real interest. In fact the only thing he seems to offer is the fact that he (Pauline) mocked Schmitz to the Giants.
If the WR/CB are gone
Mike in NY : 3/16/2023 9:34 am : link
I am a fan of Cody Mauch in Round 1 and move him to C or G
Interest is one thing
Sammo85 : 3/16/2023 9:36 am : link
They have interest in a lot of players and don't have their board even set yet.
Agree with Mike
Bob in Newburgh : 3/16/2023 9:50 am : link
Another possibility is Tippmann later on. Tremendous athlete, needs strength work, but so does JMS who is not to be confused with a tremendous athlete.
him or tippman in round 2 would be great
Eric on Li : 3/16/2023 9:55 am : link
i expect feliciano comes back on a 1-2 year deal as placeholder, hopefully they add a higher upside young center to behind that.

Hahaha... you're on fire at the minute Colin injecting reality into various discussions!

All the WR and CB will not be gone. It’s a deep draft for both so if the WR go the CB will be there and visa versa.
Rather they be interested in Olu Oluwatimi

Before Linderbaum, first-round centers had a rough recent history.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/16/2023 10:11 am : link
Travis Frederick was the last one to really pay off, and he was a widely criticized pick. Frank Ragnow is solid. The low end is our old friend Billy Price. The rest are in between. Seems that the best centers are generally made, not highly drafted. That includes Kelce.

He sounds like a serial killer.

WR - I like Addison, Hyatt, JSN. Sure other WR will be available, but outside of those 3 I do not see a 1st Round pick.

CB - Similar to WR there are only certain guys I like. In this case it is Porter, Gonzalez, and Illinois CB. As a fallback I do like Branch in Wink's scheme.

To have the grit of our OL for the next decade, count me in if he’s as good as Frederick was
As Eric has said on here, fans & draft sites tend to overrate centers.
81_Great_Dane : 3/16/2023 11:05 am : link
I understand the thirst for a stud center but I don't think there are any center prospects that justify a first-round pick. Some of them may have careers that would be worth a first round pick, but that doesn't mean you draft them that early.

I would wait to see what’s there is rd 2-3 too
Like most, wr or cb makes sense in rd one
I also realize we probably can’t fill all holes this yr and this like top cb or wr could be a next yr cherry on the top pick
The feeling after Philly game was LOS on both sides. We still really haven’t done that yet
If it was Torrance and an OC in rds 1-3 plus a cb/wr with the other pick, would be fine.
I still expect to fill a few holes in FA
Really waiting on the restructuring and extensions

I’m all for it. Tippmann is 33rd best player in Daniel Jeremiah’s top 50 and Schmitz is 47th.
I hope they can fall down to 57th pick. We need some luck lol.
In taking JMS there's also the option
Tony in Tampa : 3/16/2023 12:45 pm : link
of trading down into say the top 10 of the 2nd rnd and picking up some picks. A couple of other guys the Giants could consider in that scenario are: LB Jack Campbell from Iowa and DT Mazi Smith from Mich.
Best player available

Drafting for need at 25? Road to ruin.

There might not be a need to purchase or read any draft material this year.
