Green Bay is playing hard ball. Rodgers current 3-year contract includes a $58.3 million bonus that is due no later than Week one of the 2023 season. Clearly the Packers want to move Rodgers before then, otherwise they have to pay him. However, they have until week one to move him, and for this reason, they may hold up the trade for several months, hoping the Jets will relent and offer more compensation under the assumption that the Jets want Rodgers in preseason camp. With luck, WFAN and ESPN NY will find something else to talk about between now and whenever Green Bay decides to take the Jets offer.
After going 0-3 with Sanchez, Darnold, and Wilson I think they should definitely not trade up again for a QB. Also the Panthers and Texans have the top two picks and will take QB’s so the Jets will be stuck to chose the 3rd best quarterback.
its not 58 million until september..
and the dead cap hit lowers after June 1st, packers have no reason to do the trade now
The GM is desperate to save his job, but dont tell that to Jets fans because to them he is a god
You can’t just magically trade up. And while Rodgers is on the downturn he’s infinitely better than what they’ve had in years and if they play this right they may not have to give up a premium.
This will come down to who feels the pain first - he packers and their cap issues or the Jets and not having anyone at the most important position in sports and a HC/GM likely on the hot seat if they shit the bed this year.
Fascinating situation IMO.
This could go for a bit.
This could go for a bit.
It’s not his decision. The Jets are giving up picks and a ton of money, they want him wi the his team ASAP.
Of course they stack up the season we play them but you guys have been logical. Schoen will fly under the radar - while Douglas will be getting roses thrown at him for this genius move. I really wanted to hear that douche Tierney have to eat his words, now I need to boycott sports radio ( a good thing probably).
I hope Green Bay fleeces the Jets.
If Rogers retires, ZW becomes the best option for Jets. Think of the ramifications there.
If Rogers retires, Rogers gets nothing. And yes I know he can afford to, but greed is a historical motivator.
Who are they going to go with then? Zach Wilson? Matt Ryan?
The Jets have no other options at this point. Unless they are going to sell their fanbase on a Ryan Tannehill after being serenaded by Aaron Rodgers. There is no turning back now for them. Their other options signed elsewhere
Whoever can throw for 40TD next year.
Jets can’t do anything until it’s resolved. Their two options are offer Lamar Jackson a deal, costs 2 firsts, a TON of guaranteed money, and they will be in limbo until Ravens match or decline. Great qb option, but horrible secondary circumstances.
Jets can hope this motivated Wilson and he turns around his career. Possible, but not likely what you want to bet a season on.
There are no other FA, trade or internal options left. And they won’t be able to draft a day one starter either.
Rodgers is under contract. He can say and do whatever he wants. He can retire, but odds are he wants the money. I also don’t think anyone buys his story. He wasn’t close to retiring. He is just trying to spin the Packers as kicking him out rather than him quitting on the franchise. It’s his same old story with him. But he either retires, plays for the Packers, or plays for the team the Packers trade him too. He has next to no control.
Packers are stuck holding cap space for him whether or not he plays or retires. Sure it would suck for him to retire and they get nothing. But is it really worth giving in and moving him for such a poor return? Especially when they hold all the cards? They can hold out for five first rounders and there is nothing Rodgers or the Jets can do about it. If all the Jets want to offer is a second rounder, and that’s where Rodgers wants to go. I am SURE there are other teams that will match that offer at some point.
You don’t think Pats wouldn’t send Jones and a first for Rodgers? Dolphins? There’s a ton of teams that can maneuver in if they want to. Packers have full control, and this will not resolve itself until the Jets and/Rodgers give in.
Tons of people.

they dont have to go with Rodgers. Meanwhile, Green Bay already committed to dumping Rodgers publicly so that train has left the station. If there is nobody else offering a trade then they almost have to take what the Jets are offering.

Glad we have our QB and not facing this drama while shopping desperately hungry.

Can all those aforementioned teams afford him under the cap?
I'm under the impression the Jets have the most flexibility and motivation to get this done in the AFC.
I think big picture wise the Jets should offer up a bit more to get Rodgers in the building *IF* they know he would show up and participate in offseason activities (which he should given it's a new team for him).
If you're this all in on the guy, it's worth spending a bit more to get him now, IMO.
Carr or Garoppolo I feel would've been the more prudent choice going in, but if they feel the superstar upside is still there, then they have to pay for it, no questions asked.
I believe there's cap benefits for the Packers to wait until June 1st. Something I heard on NFL radio this morning.
On Green Bay, and he even calls himself the covid mvp. Let’s keep it positive in here and hope the Jets fail.
