he's not much of a big play guy dating back to college.
They throw so many passes at or near the line of scrimmage to him because he can make a guy miss and pick up 6-10 yards easy. When he went deep he would catch some bad throws. I think he hasn't even reached his potential.
This may have been plan B. We ll never know. But I like it.
However ... this shows how bad our pass catching options were (are). I think we all really like Bellinger for the most part and he was our best option for a couple weeks there before Hodgins started to get his shot. Waller over takes Bellinger and Campbell takes Hodgin's spot potentially, at least by popular opinion. Neither player is going to have DC's like ok we need to contain him.
Campbell is our shinny new used car ... He is a number 2 *when* healthy. We still need a #1 and Robinson is not that. Personally at this point I'd like to resign Slayton and draft 2 more WRs with #1 potential in mind. With this pick-up and the other moves ... I'm shifting my guess to cluster approach in rds 1 thru 3 from 2 WRs, 1CB and BPA on IOL/OLB/ILB to WR(1), CB(1) and IOL(1)
I was semi surprised at the ILB move ... splashier than I expected. As I said in the other thread last week maybe some semi-slasphy at the position more like the David Long deal. But I was thinking they'll rely on Beavers to come back to form. They are moving with a whole different vibe and energy in the front office. Now if they can take care of the above and hedge the Azeez bet well will be in really good shape for year 2 in the process of Joe & Brian era ....
but Campbell wasn't really used as a stretch the field type. Not saying he couldn't be used that way. He was used more as an explosive yac underneath target, and has jet sweep ability..so that would fit nicely into what Kafka was doing with the offense a year ago. He operated a lot out of the slot. Waller looks more like the stretch the field guy right now looking at his highlights. Again, not saying Campbell couldn't do that, it's just not really how he was used previously(or in college based on what other posters have mentioned). Despite having a shorter adot, he did produce chunk plays. 9 20+(7 20+ receptions and 2 20+ runs), and 1 40+ reception.
Boylhart gave him an early 2nd round grade and compares him to Cruz
If your selecting Paris thinking he is the type of receiver who is a potential franchise receiver I’m not sure that would be very smart. He is an impact player who can have an impact without touching the ball as often as other receivers. By moving him around your offense you magnify his speed and quickness and elusiveness. Keep him at one position outside the hash marks and his speed, quickness, and elusiveness will become less impacting and he can be defended by physical corners with help over the top. Can Paris become an every down receiver? Of course, but he has to learn the route tree on the outside and become more physical and show consistency catching contested passes, but the question is, why bother? As long as he is an impact player keep moving him around your offense and let him impact. Victor Cruz was moved to the outside because the Giants gave him a big contract and Victor never had the impact outside that he had being a slot or move receiver who lined up all around the offense.
I like this signing by Schoen.
I still believe the Giants will draft several WR’s in April.
Schoen at work building a roster.
For me now it’s all about the IOL now. Giants need a center and guard.
As much as I rag on Slayton, what does Campbell do better than Slayton
I think he is a replacement/upgrade for Ritchie James. But if you want to compare to slayton, he is a better route runner and a more agile athlete. Slayton is really only a vertical threat. Campbell can eat on under routes and create YAC but also has enough speed to go vertical
They have last year s draft class returning in which they investing the O line, you writing them off already. Also, unless I missed it, they have another draft coming up this April.
But Campbell had the 6th lowest depth of target in the NFL last year, at just a 6.5 yard avg.
It makes some sense to get him the ball quickly and let him use his skills to get YAC in open space, but I'd like to see Daboll/Kafka use him more on intermediate and deep routes, and I think he will.
I'm fairly ambivalent about this signing, but honestly, it's still a net-positive add given what this team trotted out at WR last year, as long as he can stay on the field.
And I like the emphasis on speed with Waller, Smith, and now PC.
I don't think anything they've done so far would change the approach to the draft in terms of targeting a WR. If the right player and value is there, then they will take a WR.
Before this we had Shep who might not make the roster because of all the injuries.
Then for all we know Robinson’s career could be toast, he tore his ACL and is a 5’8” receiver who is completely dependent on his quickness and cutting ability. He tore it late in the season and most guys do not get full speed until they are 2 years removed from their injury, so we can’t count on him until 2024.
Campbell is to going to be a starting slot receiver day 1 and we still might draft another one on day 3 of the draft The draft is overloaded with tiny slot guys.
I assume we are still looking for an outside guy and probably drafting one of those too.
1. We needed depth
2. We are still going to make a move for a top flight WR or draft one at 25. I think it’s good that giants aren’t shooting for top of market here. It makes me feel they believe they can get a deal done for Jeudy or may move up in April for a WR of choice

I don't think we know what Schoen and Daboll have in mind. Wouldn't surprise me at all if it's Zay Flowers in round one (I'm starting to think they crave slot receivers the way Belichick craves tight ends).

Right now I'd love to keep our 1 and 2. I'm 50/50 on giving the 2 for Jeudy but I WOULD do a 2023 3rd and a 2024 2nd if they'd take it.

.
3)They don't have a lot of $ to spend too...need to draft a couple, that's for sure. I doubt Denver would take that for Jeudy as well.
In his rookie year, 2019, suffered a sports hernia and missed two games, then suffered a broken hand and missed four games. In Week 2 of 2020, suffered a PCL/MCL to his left knee and was placed on IR. Activated for 2021 season and played in six games. Played in all 17 games in 2022, started in 16, and played the slot, possibly because he may have lost a step due to PCL/MCL injury. He may no longer have 4.4 speed. Would be nice if he did. We'll see.
Each year, includes receptions after the catch as well as handoffs. Campbell was the fastest recorded player in the league a year ago by nextgen at 22.11 mph, and impressively it was on a 26 yard run off a jet sweep. His speed is on full display in his 2022 highlights…I was impressed.

He is an interesting player. This is how the Colts employed him last year...but if you look at his career with the Colts(the sample sizes in the other years are much smaller obviously)...how he was used was varied:

@TalkinGiants
Giants Paris Campbell alignment by the year
2022:
Slot: 77%
Outside: 23%
2021:
Slot: 9%
Outside: 91%
2020:
Slot: 95%
Outside: 5%
2019:
Slot: 48%
Outside: 52%
In 2021, his ADOT was 16.7. 2020 it was 11.9.
I'm assuming they must have had some pass pro issues in 2022(similar to the Giants in the past where Jones out of necessity had to get the ball out sooner, which forced the offense to shorten up their routes.) Michael Pittmans ADOT last year was only 6.9.(I did look and they gave up a whopping 60 sacks as a team).
One other interesting nextgen stat in Campbells favor
His average separation per route, was 3.5. That is an elite number. It tied for 7th in the league among wideouts. Nextgen started tracking that metric in 2017 and no NYG WR has ever hit or surpassed that number. Toney was the closest at 3.4 his rookie season.
heard of this Campbell kid, so I checked out a Colts forum where I found they refer to him as a slot receiver. As Wan Robinson is likely out for the 2024 campaign, can we expect that Campbell is basically taking Robinson's place as the slot/gadget guy?
And also what I look for in a woman (especially cheap).
Someone to help out in the slot.
Should be the WR4 when it's all said and done.

For me it tough, dependable, and cheap. Don't care much about smarts

Parris Campbell on a 1 year deal has no impact on what the Giants do in the 1st round.

Nice contract. Hopefully he stays healthy.
That was my original thoughts, but reading about him seems more than just a fast hopefully deep threat.
By most reports he has good hands and runs decent routes, Ross didn't have those qualities.

Technically it is a $3M base if he doesn’t play a game. The bonuses kick in with playing time.

good find. here's a link to the video, looked like a pretty ho-hum play so wouldnt have thought anything of it.
