It would be logical to assume he had permission from the team to join the WBC. The contract is also likely insured.

Not everything is identical so why even go there. Both players got injured celebrating. That's the connection. Not their names. Not their sports. Not their pets. Just the fact both got injured celebrating.

The worst possible knee injury.

While he doesn’t rely on lateral quickness like Victor Cruz did, it’s his push off leg. Not good.

Dislocated patella and torn patella tendon are two very different things. A dislocated patella often resolves on its own and doesn't mean you'll miss the entire season, maybe not even a month. And when you tear the patella tendon a part of the patella can break off with the tendon, making it doubly bad. Go back to the Yankees Duston Fowler rupturing his patella tendon in the first inning of his first MLB game. A highly touted prospect, he's played in 87 MLB games since getting hurt in 2017. Of course, no one knows what he might have been.

I believe there is insurance. Happened with the Yankees and Teixeira; he was never the same afterward. But what does insurance matter when you lose a key player to some ridiculous, manufactured bullshit exhibition tournament?

Fuck the WBC.

Looks like it's a full-thickness tear, which is about as bad as it gets.

I also really hate reading all this backlash on the WBC.

Anyone who is watching this can see that these guys are fucking loving this tournament and to see the stars play and represent the country they were born in is pretty incredible. I've been tuning in every night.

I ask all fans football and baseball alike, who are you to say what players can and can't do with their lives. People complain about being controlled all the time and when fans act like this its so effing hypocritical.

That said, awful news and Eppler needs to go get Britton
In other words..
moze1021 : 3/16/2023 2:49 pm : link
I said last night... based on how the injury happened, how he was trying to keep his knee straight..

I was hoping it was a simple dislocation and he'd be back without surgery (I had same injury once)...

And my hope was it was NOT the worst case, which is the Cruz injury (torn patellar tendon with damage at connection point to bone)

And it looks like it IS the worst case

I wouldn’t want Giants players playing in an international tournament, if that’s what you’re getting at. I’m glad you like it, but MLB has no reason to let its players participate after the contracted year starts. How that is hypocritical, I have no idea.
Horrible news.
81_Great_Dane : 3/16/2023 2:53 pm : link
But, from the Mets' point of view, it's: "Now what?" Presumably their front office has at least discussed "What happens if he gets hurt?" for every guy in lineup, and the answer is never "We give up on the season." They may not have a Plan B in place, but they have to have thought about one.

Could Megill move to the pen? IIRC he didn't go late into games anyway.

Megill’s splits against LHB are atrocious. Until that improves, he’s not an option. I’m guessing Robertson may be the best candidate.
The Mets won a 101 games last year, improved the roster overall,
ZGiants98 : 3/16/2023 3:20 pm : link
And just lost a 3 win player. Yeah, it sucks. It’s brutal. But losing any of Nimmo, McNeil, Alonso, Scherzer, Verlander, or Lindor would have been much worse.

Robertson has an entire career full of closing games. That’s why you bring in a setup man with closing experience. So they can literally fill in if you lose your closer. Ottavino has some experience as well.

The Mets will be reliever shopping now and at the deadline.

This season is just getting started and there’s plenty to look forward to.

Hypocritical? Hardly. These are wealthy employees basically playing in meaningless exhibition games. Would your boss up and let you work for another company for free, possibly get injured, while still paying you? Hell no they wouldn’t.

You like it? That’s nice. That doesn’t change the fact that the WBC is and always has been manufactured bullshit to try and be like baseballs World Cup. It’s not and it never will be.

It doesn’t matter what fans or players think of the WBC, what matters is how MLB teams will respond to losing premier players to catastrophic injuries. They have no obligation to support the WBC.

If they have a guaranteed contract, and their team approved them going to the WBC, then they are going to get paid, and they have every right to. A team trying not to pay would get sued and lose.

after the fact.

I'm a therapist. I frequently mention Into Thin Air when people start blaming benign or reasonable things to make themselves feel better. I do it too! A bunch of people climbed Mt. Everest. There were sherpas, guides, a socialite, crazy weather, it's the tallest mountain in the world, oxygen is limited, lots of egos, and it's cold as hell. There doesn't need to be anything to blame. When you climb the world's tallest mountain, sometimes people die. When you jump up and down, sometimes you get injured. There is nothing ridiculous about that celebration. I herniated a disc picking up the phone book when I was 23. We love to blame. Now all I have to tell my clients, when they get in that head space, is "when you climb mountains, sometimes people die". There are times where blame is absolutely warranted. But I'm not sure this is one of those times.

Sure, they have no obligation to support it that we know of.
By the way, Steve Cohen allowed at least 3-4 prominent Mets to compete in it and went to the WBC game today to watch Ohtani pitch. He flew to Japan in person to see it.

So there are baseball fans that support it. I do not think he would deny a player who felt strongly about it the right to play in it.
That could be the end of MLB participation in future WBCs

I understand why. Not only was he great last year he was also a big reason to buy a ticket or watch a game.

Mariano hurt his knee and missed almost the entire 2012 season. The Yankees still won 95 games.

The Mets owners are no longer named Wilpon. Steve Cohen will do what he has to to find a closer. It just won't be as much fun.

Diaz was huge last year and it is a blow to the Mets. But, I think closer is an easier position to fill than if it was a front line starter.

Olsen, Riley, Fried, Acuna, the stud catcher they just got.

Or any Phillies, minus Schwarber...no Wheeler, Nola, etc

Riddle me that as Omar Little said.

I hate the WBC and the sooner the US loses (and PR), the better.

The Mets have/had five of their "starters" playing; Lindor, Alonso, McNeil, Escobar and Diaz.

How can one team have so much more exposure than their top rivals?

I paid good $ to see the Mets compete with the players they paid this off-season...and one, worth 100 million, can choose to play in some worthless tournament and expose himself to injury? I don't care what the players think about it. Do they love skydiving and skiing too? How bout an ATV while you're at it?

Sorry, one man's opinion, but Billy Eppler should be accountable for letting his stars play, when the other best teams in the division, for whatever reason, did not.

I'm pissed. Yes, there is a whole season to play, but the Met's chances for post season and beyond just took a big, and totally avoidable, hit.
