I believe this is only good news for Steve Cohen. My understanding is this will *not* impact the lux tax implications for the Mets. I'm looking into this further but that's what I've heard.

Carig had an article about player extensions. What did he quote for Alonso?

9 for 207

Thanks! Seems fair to what we said a few weeks ago.
Yup

First thought reading the article was “so about what we were discussing”

Dan thank you as always - I’m reading this as Díaz’ contract still counts towards the threshold?

Update

Will dmed me again and said “we still are waiting confirmation from the league because this is personal insurance”

Claimed off waivers from the Twins. Interesting RP arm. No options left.
Mets will be reimbursed for Edwin Díaz’s salary after WBC injury

The Mets won’t end up paying Díaz because the injury occurred while he was participating in the WBC. Major League Baseball has insurance in place to protect the team in these types of circumstances. As the New York Post first reported Thursday night, if the right-hander doesn’t return this season, MLB’s insurance would cover Díaz’s 2023 salary of $18.64 million. It’s unclear, however, whether his salary will still count against the luxury tax.

Nimmo

He just got hurt sliding into 2B and appeared to be in a lot of pain. Eventually limped off with trainers.
Wow

Not the easiest spring training for the Mets

Unreal

Nimmo injury way more damaging than Diaz, imo

What a disastrous start to the 2023 season
The irony of course...
moze1021 : 3/17/2023 8:49 pm : link
Is that Nimmo not playing in WBC and slow played spring training because he wanted to make sure he was healthy and ready to win a World Series...dude looks like a freaking monster in best shape of his life..

..and then he hurts himself getting down and out of the way on a routine double play ball

good will sammon article on diaz if your feeling optimistic

“There is some optimism,” a person close to Díaz told The Athletic. “You never know.”

The hope mainly stems from Díaz’s resiliency and how the situation on Wednesday night was handled. In a situation like Díaz’s, it’s vital to operate immediately. The longer the wait, the more scarring occurs, and that adds to the recovery process. But the Mets were positioned to move fast.

Mets physician Dr. James Carr was in Miami for the World Baseball Classic at the time of the injury and gave Díaz an examination. Carr quickly surmised that the injury was likely a torn patellar tendon. Imaging around noon on Thursday confirmed that hunch. Fortunately for the Mets and Díaz, the club’s medical director Dr. David Altchek happened to be in town, too. In another bit of good fortune, the Hospital for Special Surgery operates a location in south Florida. So the Mets didn’t need to fly Díaz anywhere for a second opinion; they received one digitally, according to a major-league source, another measure that saved time.

Just hours after suffering his freak injury during a celebration with team Puerto Rico, Díaz underwent surgery Thursday afternoon. He has already returned to his home in Port St. Lucie, Florida to begin his recovery. Waiting for him there was a trainer, nutritionist and personal chef, courtesy of Cohen and the Mets.

Cohen called Díaz to tell him, “We’re going to do everything we can to get you better and take care of you.”

In baseball, only a short list of comparable situations exist. Rays pitcher Zach Eflin profiles as one of the best because, like Díaz, he’s a right-hander who had surgery on his right patellar tendon. Eflin’s injury occurred in September 2021. Eflin returned to the mound for the start of the 2022 season, which was within six months. The list also includes Garrett Richards, a right-handed pitcher who had surgery to repair his left patellar tendon in August 2014. He returned to game action in April 2015 and logged 207 1/3 innings that season.

Though there isn’t a lot of supporting data to back up the thought, Alaia said that the prescribed timetable for recovery might’ve been longer if the injury had happened to Díaz’s left leg or landing leg instead of his right leg, which is used to push off.

“He’s got the benefit of being a pitcher in this case, and it’s not his leading leg,” Alaia said. “The left leg, when it comes down from a pitch, is going to be bent. It’s going to have a lot more torque across the patella when the left leg comes down. If this was different, if he had a left leg patellar tendon rupture, it actually might take him a substantially longer period of time to recover and get back to throwing. Because it’s more of the push-off leg, where the knee doesn’t have to bend as much, perhaps he might be able to come back a little sooner.”

8 months is november 16th, so if 6 months is extreme maybe we all shake on 7 and get him back in october.
