Trending toward WR/CB in some order rounds 1 and 2

CornerStone246+17 : 3/16/2023 6:40 pm

From a draft standpoint, the premium positions that remain big needs are WR and CB. Schoen has stressed that high in the draft the preference is for the premium position. Mainly because it impacts your team more and you have 4 to 5 years of cost control on the player. If you try for the premium position to often in FA or via trade the cost is very, very high and can quickly destroy your cap space.

This offseason so far in Free Agency, he made the 'big' splashes at ILB and TE. He Franchised Barkley at the low-ish FT number for a RB.

WR is still a huge long term need moving forward as we take a closer look at the guys signed as our current top receiving options. Waller is past 30 and is essentially a year to year contract, Campbell has had trouble staying healthy and is on a 1 year deal, Slayton is on a 2 year deal with if I had to guess an 'easy out' in year 2, Hodgins is on his last year of a cost controlled contract, Shep is past his prime and breaking down. We need to hit a home run here in the draft to secure a long term cost controlled player that can hopefully become a staple in the passing game for at least the next 4-5 years at a cost controlled price.

As for CB, Wink's system screams for two high level M2M CB's on the boundaries. It allows him free reign to blitz from everywhere. He has been quoted as saying "Get me the Corners and I can manufacture the pressure". They haven't really upgraded this spot in FA (as of yet). Adoree is a bit injury prone and on the last year of his deal. After that we have a bunch of unknowns. Mostly young guys, some with upside but some injury prone and many unproven as of right now. Even though he still blitzed a lot, Wink was severely handcuffed last year in dialing up the type of pressures from anywhere and everywhere with the numbers he sometimes likes to send to.

You could make the argument if we go WR or CB round 1 with which ever is the better graded guy in round 1, you have a chance to end up with :

@WR:

Rd 1: JSN, Addison, Johnston, Flowers, Hyatt
Rd 2: TYLER SCOTT, Josh Downs, Cedric Tillman, Jayden Reed, Michael Wilson

@CB:

Rd 1: Porter Jr (doubtful), Deonte Banks, Tyreke Stephenson, Forbes
Rd 2: Garrett Williams, Ringo, Darius Rush, Cam Smith

A deep sleeper is IOL (most likely Center) with:

Rd 1 O'Cyrus Torrence
Rd 2 Schmitz(c), Tippman (c), Avila (g)
Rd 3 Luke Wypler, Olu Oluwatimi (c), Scruggs (c)

I could still see us taking ILB in the early rounds too.
Lotta possibilites here..including Torrence/Schmidt G,C in rounds 1&2.
I can see

DL being a first or second round pick. Easily a need and if we don't long term Leo we would need two DL in the next couple of years.
I am hoping they land a WR in round 1

and that at least one of Jordan Addison, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Quenton Johnson, and Zay Flowers are there.
Giants still need a #1 WR for the future. Wouldn't surprise me a bit

if they grab one in round 1.
BPA
Andy in Boston : 3/16/2023 7:01 pm : link
Could be DL , OL or Edge.
Nolan Smith, Cyrus O , Ojulari , Beresee, Will Robertson, are all in play IMO

Breese would be interesting was originally thought top 10
may be a good value at 25
JSN, Addison, Johnston yes at 25
Chip : 3/16/2023 7:03 pm : link
The other 2 no. Flowers is like Robinson and we don't need another one.

At that point I go OL if Torrence is there. So I would rank in preference the 3 wr and then Torrence as my top 4 and if all 4 are gone than someone must have dropped and take that guy.

Yes

I think that Schoen is strategically positioning the Giants so that they can select the best players available.

He is using free agency to fill holes and create depth.

I believe that in the first two rounds the Giants go best player available.

Agree- if two players are tied he’ll go WR but I won’t be shocked with a CB, Dline, OL
Good post Corner.

I’ve always felt that Sauce was their top target last year, not KT. Wink needs CB’s more than ER’s.

Agreed 100% it was Sauce. I can't see them NOT giving him a premium CB either in FA/Trade or in the top 2 rounds of the draft this year.
Agree with OP.

WR/CB first two picks. Also think there’s a very strong chance they package the 3rd to move up.

My thoughts as well.

I’ve said it here before but I’d be thrilled with Torrence in rd1, and Tillman in rd2.

Yeah Pepe. Absolutely possible on packaging the 3 to move up if a CB/WR gets in their range that is on their highest tier.

towards BPA. I wouldn't be surprised at DL or LB, maybe even OL if Torrence is available.

I’d be SHOCKED if WR isn’t picked in round 1 unless of course top 5 gone

Edge and DL imo wouldn’t be a good allocation of resources when you’re so thin at IOL, CB and especially WR

My guess is for the first three rounds is

WR
CB
IOL

I also would NOT be shocked if JS trades up for a WR especially if Johnston drops into the teens

WR could very well be our top pick but we might not have the WR in the same tier as the CB and there are some sneaky good WR options in round 2.

We're not that well set with edge and DL. There's nobody to step in for Leonard Williams should he go down as an interior pass-rusher and while we've re-signed Jihad Ward, he's best as a run defender and Ojulari does have some deficiencies there. Good edges tend to disappear after the first couple rounds (Maxx Crosby is the current exception).

Giants haven't taken a non-pass rush ILB or IOL in round 1 in 30+ years.
