2019 Sy'56 Scouting Reports on Campbell and Okereke

Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/16/2023 9:04 pm
4: Paris Campbell – Ohio State – 6’0/205

Grade: 78

Summary: After a very successful high school track career, Campbell arrived at Ohio State and had to wait awhile before he made a big impact on offense. He turned from athlete to football player and ended his career with two straight All-Big 10 seasons, 2018 being a 1st Team honor. The team captain showed glimpses of elite, game breaking talent who is based on speed and easy movement. He is one of those players who is simply playing at a different speed than his opponents, no matter who is on the field. He still has some rawness to his game but receivers in the Ohio State offense don’t always get the full opportunity to show what they can really do. There is a boom or bust label next to Campbell’s name, but at the very least he will be a dangerous return man and gimmick-player who opposing defenses do not want to deal with.

*I was recently told by someone I trust that Campbell is “definitely” going to be the first WR taken. The NFL loves his skill set and top tier explosion. Campbell has the look of a star but there are a couple things missing for me. First, I think he lacks some of the toughness that is required to be an effective slot and there is an inconsistent attention to detail that isn’t always needed in the OSU offense. Upside is undeniable and I do think he will make plays, but I wouldn’t want him to be my number one guy.

NFL Comparison: Michael Gallup / DAL

*********

3 – Bobby Okereke – Stanford – 6’1/239

Grade: 80

Summary: Fifth year senior with three years of starting experience. Two time Honorable Mention All Pac 12 defender. Okereke fits the mold for today’s ideal linebacker when it comes to skill set. He is more than athletic enough to factor in coverage with his plus-top end speed and easy fluidity in his hips. The length is another plus there and he can really make his presence known physically. He is a tough, hard nosed linebacker that will let you know he hit you. Okereke lacks some of the vital instincts and natural flow and he may struggle with how fast things transpire in the NFL. However he is a solid weak side candidate that can make plays in space and give a defense options. Likely an eventual solid starter.

*Last year I had Darius Leonard as a top 5 overall player in the draft, he ended up being taken in the 2nd round and won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. I bring that up because I have Leonard comps in multiple places for Okereke. I don’t see the same caliber but when it comes to skill set, they are similar. The elite, rare length paired with fluid hips can make him a major weapon in coverage and he is a violent player in traffic. There is a lot he can do, and he will be a true 3 down player.

NFL Comparison: Darius Leonard / IND

That’s great, but Campbell hasn’t come close to playing like his “talent” would suggest.
Maybe now that he is over the injuries he can achieve his potential

Last season was the first season he wasn't hurt.

It was also a tough season for him because the Colts QB play was the second worst in the NFL behind the Jets.

So a much-heralded WR finally has an injury-free season and may really be poised to take off - and his team still doesn’t keep him. This just doesn’t bode well, sorry. I’m not excited at all by the signing.
I know Sy has his reasons

But I do miss the NFL comparisons he used to give on his scouting report write ups.

HA - you have no idea how strong that is turned on
I loved the Campbell write-up

until I saw the Michael Gallup comp! A completely overrated player. That said I Love the Parris Campbell signing. He needs to stay healthy, but the guy can play.
Sy knows LB

OL And DB play better than any scout or draftnik I can recall. I remember the Darius Leonard hype, along with Braden Smith, Quentin Nelson, Okereke, Juan Thornhill, Justin Simmons and the list goes on. But for me those are the mid rated guys who Sy loved and he was absolutely right. I have more respect for his football acumen than pretty much anyone. The fact that he is willing to admit mistakes and not hide, to me makes him as quality a person as he is an analyst.
Anybody who DOESN’T…

…look at Sy’s archived draft write up when they sign a FA should have their forum ID suspended for 30 days.

Sure it's great, but these guys have pro experience. Their strengths and limitations have been further defined, or developed since then.

Their strengths remain their strengths and discussions of mental game and leadership qualities don’t make it to their pro commentary.

Who says Campbell wanted to return to Indy? Perhaps he didn't mesh as well with Reggie Wayne as his position coach than he did with Mike Groh. Also, maybe he did not want to be part of a rebuild with uncertainty at QB spot throwing him the ball 2 yards down the field and asking him to make something out of nothing. Playing for the Giants also gives Campbell a chance to show what he can do on the outside as Pierce/Pittman are the two outside guys in Indianapolis.

Sy graded him 78, not 90.
