Marcus Mariota signs with the Eagles

Tom in NY : 3/17/2023 2:07 am
That's a pretty good back-up QB signing, and is probably a closer fit to Hurts' skill set than Minishew.

Apparently there is an endless supply of cap $ in Phila.
I always laugh when BBI gets all pissy about investing in QB

“Don’t ever spend a mid round pick on QB.” The Eagles don’t have that philosophy. They drafted Hurts when Wentz was established and they always take backup QB seriously.

I thought he quit football?

They can have him.
Kind of interesting

A hedge vs a holdout? I mean at some point they have to pay hurts or let him walk,

Signing another qb and a cb, I wonder if they consider drafting hurts replacement this year and just let him walk and keep reloading.
Didn't everything think Minshew was a great signing be the eagles

last year?

Didn't he suck when he played?

If I recall some thought the Giants should have drafted him for a starter.

Mariotta still has wheels but he is an abysmal passer. Just abysmal.

They drafted Hurts when the realized Wentz was tearing the locker room apart AFTER signing him to a four-year, $128 million contract extension with $107 million guaranteed. It should have ruined them, but as usual some sucker bailed them out again. They signed Nate Sudfeld and Gardner Minshew as their “serious” backup QBs. And Nick Foles was dog shit until he sold his soul to the devil in 2018. Come on man, let’s not overstate things.

Chris, can you give some insight into the issues Wentz was causing in the locker room? I've heard rumors of trouble, but don't think I ever heard any of the details. I can only assume those, or similar, issues continued in Indy and Washington as well. THanks!

Signing Mariota at a backup quarterback rate is a brilliant move. It keeps his options open on trading Hurts if his contract demands become absurd, which they most certainly will. Mariota may be a game manager, but he has the capacity to successfully operate a high powered offense and win playoff games.

I think he was the Titans QB that ended Alex Smith's stint in KC in the divisional round.

This is a stretch. Mariota has the capacity to win playoff games? He won a single playoff game in his career - 2018 against Alex Smith with Derrick Henry rushing for 150+ yards and MM throwing a TD pass to himself off of a deflection. And he has been terrible since. Come on.

I can't answer definitively, but even before they resigned him at least a dozen anonymous players were leaking stories about what a douchebag he was. He was accused of changing plays in the huddle that led to turnovers, alienating segments of the team, acting like he was better than everyone else, overtly proselytizing (some argued fakely) in the locker room, having a clique. Just a terrible leader and not a good guy. And they backed up the brinks truck. And only then decided to get rid of him. If they were not able to trade him, he would have been an albatross. Frank fucking Reich.

Now he's on that team. Why and how do the Eagles seem to have unlimited money in their cap all of the time, as well as top picks in the draft?
This is sickening.

The cap can be manipulated so much, it doesn't exist. It's always been that way. I honestly think it's just in place to keep the overall salaries down, and more $$$ in the owners' pockets.
Roseman outsmarted the league yet again!

Oh come on, Mariotta doesn’t move the needle for anyone. He’s going to trade Hurts and start Mariotta? I don’t think so. Mariotta is a nice signing as a backup, noth8ng more.
Re Howie Roseman...
clatterbuck : 3/17/2023 11:50 am : link
Mariotta stinks. He's nothing more than a back-up, do not think he's a back up plan for letting Hurts walk.
Absolutely No chance of Trading Hurts!
GeoMan999 : 3/17/2023 12:12 pm : link
Howie is working with Hurts on a team friendly long term contract approach, which has allowed them to sign some of these guys. He will still get a very, very large contract, but it will likely be 5-6 years plus and provide flexibility for future “cap management”.

I actually dread all the future BBI drama comparing it to DJ’s contract!

My point was simply that Roseman is three or four chess moves ahead at any point in time. Clearly they are not trading Hurts if they ultimately reach a sensible contract. But he is not assuming anything.

Given the Lamar Jackson situation, Hurts may have no interest in doing anything "team friendly" and will instead come at the team with compensation demands far beyond his fair value. Hurts is good, but he isn't elite. If he regresses or morphs into a selfish prima donna in making contract demands over the next eighteen months, Roseman will trade him in a Philadelphia minute.
We should go get Minshew

Whatever happens..
Chris in Philly : 3/17/2023 3:42 pm : link
with Hurts and his contract demands, MM is not a starting QB in this league and he was not signed as insurance. If they trade Hurts, they would use that capital to draft or trade for a new replacement.

Thanks Chris! I knew there were issues, but didn't realize how bad it was.

Btw, why would Hurts agree to take one more snap on his current contract? Seems like malpractice by his agent to risk injury this season after the statistical year, and subsequent playoff run he just had. He was injured this past season, so they know it can happen. The Phila owner said himself that Hurts has " ...nothing left to prove." That sounds like $55-$60MM/yr " to me.
