At that number probably would have gambled on a 1 year deal versus trading for Waller
Waller is much better than Gesicki. If he were a FA he’d have gotten much more. Waller also has no guaranteed money after this season so it can be a one year deal if the Giants choose. If Waller produces p, they bring him back. If he doesn’t, he’s gone with no financial hits. That is a MUCH better situation than signing Gesicki to a one year deal
but I thought Gesicki would be the target. Maybe not quite as dynamic as Waller but younger and cheaper with upside. And we would have kept our pick for something else.

I can’t imagine Gesicki making some of those catches that Waller made on his highlight tape.

I never thought he would be - we're a run centric offense that excels best in play action. Gesicki can't block to save his career.
any longer. He has spent a TON of $ on WR's and TE's over the last 4 years and his offense has been dreadful. You already have Hunter Henry and let Jonu Smith go (teh Pats signed both Henry and Smith in the same FA class) so now you are spending even more money on TE's.
I think BB gets a ton of respect and credit for the dynasty built in NE BUT, it is becoming more and more clear that a large part of that was BRADY! BB's decisions on staff choices, signings and draft picks (a few years ago they drafted two TE's in the same round) have been very questionable at best.
...and think about this: Gesicki's number is up to $9 million for one year, while Waller's is $10 million on a deal that the Giants can walk away from after one year.
his salary cap hit for 2023 is less than Gesicki's.
I think what you're seeing with NE is Belichick's methods losing their luster due to various factors. You could get away with striking out on receivers like Ocho Cinco and Josh Gordon when you were hitting on guys like Gronk and Edelman, Brady was running the show, and Dante Scarnecchia was coaching up the O-line to over-achieve (he even made Nate Solder look good!). Now they have a QB who's the definition of "mid", they have way more misses than hits on WR and TE acquisitions, and that O-line isn't overachieving any more. Talent-wise, they're last in their division.

Waller much more of a match up issue
Gesicki is a solid receiver not so good blocker
Waller is a pretty dynamic target and red zone threat and not so good blocker
Like Waller a good deal better
Someone Defenses have to actually take notice of

I was pretty vocal about signing Gesicki to exactly this deal prior to FA but the Waller move is a lot better. He's more explosive and the Giants have some upside with the team friendly contract.
I think this is a good move for the Pats. Gesicki has the opportunity to increase his value after a down year too.
...the last few years finding young players who have the kind of mental and physical toughness he spent an entire career identifying, acquiring and coaching up.
good point

Then hit FA and get a little more on a multi-year deal.

That’s what he got this year on the tag

I love calling them the most boring team in the NFL. May those jerkoff and entitled fans wallow in it.
