McKinney

It seems like a foregone conclusion here that X is in line for a big contract soon. Maybe I'm in the minority- I think he's a very good player, but I don't think he's taken that step up into the elite category. Last year was a big disappointment, especially with the injury, but injury aside I didn't think he played great. I feel like next season is a prove it year if he wants to get the big bucks in his 2nd contract.
He will have to earn it this year
Dave on the UWS : 3/17/2023 2:34 pm : link
but Schoen and Daboll referred to him as one of their "core guys" last year.
I'm kind of in that same boat
AcesUp : 3/17/2023 2:35 pm : link
If he's looking for top safety money and doesn't take that next step, he's very much in line to get and maybe play on the tag next year.

He was elite prior to ATV, imo..
I disagree
RCPhoenix : 3/17/2023 2:37 pm : link
The pass defense was noticeably worse after he went out last year.
Let's not put the cart before the horse

He'll have to earn it this season, indeed.
It certainly seemed
Spiciest Memelord : 3/17/2023 2:44 pm : link
the Giants swoon exactly coincided with him shoving his arm into a ATV engine.
Yes, but the plan is a good one

Only pay big money to big time players
Contracts like Solder’s and Golladays can crush roster building

That's certainly true, but it doesn't mean that he's a Pro Bowl player. It just means that the guys behind him were a big dropoff.
He was pretty
darren in pdx : 3/17/2023 2:47 pm : link
darn good last year, pre-injury. He's going to get a decent contract as an ascending player that would be a huge loss for the team.

The swoon also coincided with Jackson's injury as well as Robinson's, and also followed the wipeout of the D-Line depth, the damage to Barkley's shoulder and the near-removal of Bellinger's eye.

Heck, if correlation=causation, we can blame the trade of Kadarius Toney.
I agree the defense plays better when is playing
Chip : 3/17/2023 2:50 pm : link
He should get his 5th year option before a 2nd contract as I recall he was first rounder. It seems strange having players worthy of a 2nd contract. Didn't happen very much with Reese.

One of the most beautiful things about the 22 season was Toney making that big punt return to help deny the Eagles the ring. Mission accomplished. The Giants can retire his 89 jersey one day.
so much for the option
Chip : 3/17/2023 2:59 pm : link
I do believe you have to keep him.
He has all pro skills
larryflower37 : 3/17/2023 3:15 pm : link
The defense needs more pieces so he can show what he is capable of.
They are forced to double a lot because of below average corners when we get 2 solid corners he will be free to roam and create plays.
To me
RicFlair : 3/17/2023 3:17 pm : link
He’s always seemed like a SS playing FS.
Believe that the Giants paid him
US1 Giants : 3/17/2023 3:23 pm : link
after his non-football injury even though they didn't have to. Given how important every cap dollar was last season, that tells me that the Giants see him as a core player.

Didn't happen with the Giants because we didn't draft any young good guys we needed to resign.
He is not Elite yet
Rudy5757 : 3/17/2023 11:05 pm : link
It’s a big year for him. I think he will make the leap this year from good to Elite. He has to stay on the field.
I think he's a stud - can play either safety position at a top level
PatersonPlank : 3/17/2023 11:11 pm : link
and he sounds like a leader on the D

^ Thgis is a lot closer to accurate than saying he was "elite" or playing at a pro bowl level.
I didn't like his attitude at all post accident.
Red Right Hand : 3/18/2023 4:09 am : link
He fucked up and copped an attitude like "how dare you ask for an accounting". LIke someone did something to him as opposed to him fucking up.Real turnof.. Went from being a HUGE fan to kind of feeling "meh" about the guy.
with love gone he's moved up the list of guys to extend
Eric on Li : 3/18/2023 10:49 am : link
he's the green dot on d and probably the best player in the secondary. if they didnt want to extend love at 6m then i cant imagine they want to pay the tag amount to a safety next year.

Combination of both FS and SS. Very versatile. I think having Love back there helped both of them. See what happens now. Giants may regret losing Love.
The FS/SS distinction
Cenotaph : 3/18/2023 2:58 pm : link
isn't as big a deal as it used to be. A typical 'SS' from 5-10 years ago is probably a LB now (see Collins)...many system have safeties that are a bit more interchangeable.

That said, McKinney has shown some good play, but also has seemed to lack the real 'playmaking' (creating TO's/big D plays) that top safeties get paid for. Love is a fair example of that also - he racked up nice numbers last year, and improved each year he was with us - but was more a solid guy than a real difference maker. I think what McKinney gets going forward is going to depend big on next year's performance.

Love a 4th Rd pick who panned out well; let's hope we can find a replacement similarly (whether on the roster now or in the next draft). I personally would have preferred Love to Slayton at similar $; especially with the other signings the Giants have made (we have a ton of #2-3 type WRs; it's certainly possible Slay is on the edge for playing time if Wandale/Campbell steps up, Hodgins repeats, a new draft pick comes in and maybe even Shep comes back from injury). Again - not in love with all these moves, but it's what they did and it can turn out good, we'll just have to see.

They’re different tier and caliber players. Love is a utility safety that plays more slot and closer to the LOS as well while McKinney has played deep middle. It’s more valuable. And there is also a report that we wanted to pay Love but he took less elsewhere.

McKinney is going to be looking for Jessie Bates or Justin Simmons money. I’m basing this off one of Jordan Raanans recent pods and it tracks with strong play and his draft pedigree. At this point, I don’t think he’s worth that but even if he’s a notch down, that’s a tag situation. I mean we’re tagging a RB this year.
