But that move to go underneath across his own back was tremendous and done with total commitment. It’s like watching Schute get thrown in Vision Quest.
Haines with an unbelievable comeback (and pin) after nearly getting pinned to get down 6-0 in the first period. Onto the finals tomorrow as a true freshman.

I thought that was a quick fall call, though Andonian was completely gassed, and wasn’t winning it

Andonian is a funky wrestler. Haines was in deep on a single and seconds later his stacked up looking at the lights. Great effort by Haines to fight through it, grind it out, and then put away Andonian.
An insane night. I train at the NLWC sometimes, and even I didn’t see this coming
I always wanted to ask you this question - why didn't Joseph get another year for Covid? I don't get that. Hell, Kemerer of Iowa wrestled until he was almost 30. A lot of those Iowa guys, in fact, seemed to get extra time, which helped them win the title in 2021.

Levi bridges immediately to prevent getting pinned. He’s wrestling way above his age for an 18 year old. Though M2 and DT will help that

Joseph and Halls class didn’t get the Covid year. I forget what the actual rules were, but that class who wrestled half that year didn’t get a chance at the post season. Look out for Starocci being the one and only 5 timer
NCAA Wrestling tournament is my favorite sporting event now.

Haines is a stud. Speaking only for Bryce, he's so unorthodox that a more traditional approach when he gets a lead would be better. Was up early on Scott but got pinned by him late in the consi's.
I don't think his conditioning ever reached its peak this year over injuries.
Hopefully, he returns for one more year along with Mekhi (highly doubtful).
RE: NCAA Wrestling tournament is my favorite sporting event now.
So many highs and lows unless you're a Penn State fan.
Hokies had a rough quarterfinal performance then did very well in the bloodround followed by mix results in the consis.
Great sport and such a tight knit community. You really bond with your team's wrestlers more than most college sports.
Great post, and it truly is a bond and a community. Mekhi is definitely hurt again, he’s a warrior. Andonian is a must watch for me
Thanks.
Mekhi is my favorite Hokie student athlete of all time. I won't be surprised if he's wrestling with something torn in his leg for the past two months. He's always been a counter attacker but hasn't done much on offense the past two months.
Great young man and gave $8k in NIL to a New Jersey shelter last summer.

Haines is. Looking forward to seeing how he deals with the much older O'Connor.
I think Mekhi made a mistake not trying to ride out Laviola in OT, btw. He's a good rider when he has to be. And I think he could have pushed that match further.

Agreed. Put the blame on the VT coaches. They made the same decision in Latona-Mendes at the same time and it cost them.
Sasso might be due. Yanni was fortunate to eke out the W over Munci and rallied to beat Van Ness. He seems vulnerable...
Sasso definitely has a shot, Yianni has had two close ones. I’m still just shocked Spencer went down
It is surreal with Lee. You know, I think Ramos almost decked Lee in the duals this year. But Lee squirmed out of it and then turned into Spencer Lee by scoring a major.
Did you see how Dean lost in the consolations to Truex? I still can't believe it. I think if he closes that out, it would have sealed the PSU championship.
Not that it matters because it's a foregone conclusion, but it was a helluva way for Dean to go out.
Ramos with an unbelievable move to put Lee on his back. Wow!
That was an insane finish.
Yes it was and just an amazing move by Ramos there. Looked like some type of reverse arm bar or half. Whatever it was it was locked in tight as hell and no way Lee was getting out of it.
Been watching HS and College wrestling since 1980 and I don’t remember ever seeing that. To pull it off on the biggest of stages against a great 3X Champ was exciting as hell.
Meanwhile Glory rolled in his semi and should be a great final. Is it finally Glory’s year? D’s Ramos shoot his load in th semi or will it propel him to get to the top of the podium? Two great storylines and one I’m looking forward to see play out.
Lastly, did we really need to see Lee’s mom’s reaction? Give the woman a break and I know I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be filmed watching my kid lose. I get the Carr/ Monday dads split screen with their storyline and now their sons battling, but showing a mom losing it and in tears isn’t cool.
But that move to go underneath across his own back was tremendous and done with total commitment. It’s like watching Schute get thrown in Vision Quest.
Great flick. Way more realistic wrestling than in “Takedown.” Though back in the day we were happy to see wrestling at all on the big screen. Good casts in both though.
Sasso might be due. Yanni was fortunate to eke out the W over Munci and rallied to beat Van Ness. He seems vulnerable...

Yea, Ramos got out to an 8-0 lead in their first matchup, had near fall points. Lee was a one trick pony this year, he has regressed. You see this a lot with the older Iowa Wrestlers. Will be interesting where his career goes from here.
Max has struggled recently, I’m guessing he’s fighting some type of injury. His lead leg has looked like it’s been stuck in concrete, never seen him get taken down this much. But he is an 84 Wrestling 97, was great to see him go out with a win. His interview after was great too, great kid.
I don’t like Lee quitting on his team, and not Wrestling today.
PSU has it all wrapped up before the finals even start, the dynasty continues!
Fantastic battles all night and a lot of exciting, action packed battles with guys opening up and going for it as opposed to some year where it seems a lot of guys get tight.
Always a treat to witness some history and seeing a guy get crowned with his 4th Natl title is one to remember. I’m happy for the Jersey guy Glory to finally get his top spot on the podium.
As always the back stories of all these young men are remarkable and the future is bright with men like these. The brotherhood and sportsmanship in the wrestling community is second to none, and something that should always be acknowledged.
I’ve seen it from the days of midget wrestling on up to this highest of levels. The respect wrestlers have for each other and the sport is beyond compare. Everyone in it knows how hard it is no matter the level and I think it’s a big reason why the respect is there and once you’re in it, you’re in it for life.
Can't believe how Vito Arujau dominated RBY. I watched his match against Fix and he was very impressive. But I didn't think that was going to carryover against RBY. He made RBY look ordinary. Maybe the pressure of the moment (going for a 3-bagger) and having to reach deep in the semis caught up to RBY...?
Kudos to Van Ness and Barlett fighting back to get third. Both have promising futures for PSU. Van Ness wrestled absolutely great.
Getting dominated like that surprised me. Vito was just bigger and faster, he was the better Wrestler. I don’t think RBY was as committed as previous years, he’s ready for his next chapter of life. It was a great finals, lots of good storylines.
Some general thoughts
I thought Carr would win, was wrong on that.
I thought Haines would give AOC a better challenge. But that’s a 5th year vs a 18 year old.
Parris should win the Hodge imo
Starocci and Brooks are absolute studs. Starocci’s interviews this past year make me wonder if he’s going to pursue being the first 5 timer

I heard Carter's presser last night. It sounds like getting the 4 or 5X NCAA title is second to getting a gold medal. But he still needs to think about it. And he's also very interested in a long plan to follow Nickal into MMA.
As a PSU fan, I hope he comes back to make school and perhaps NCAA history. He's a monster right now.
Does Brooks have an opportunity for one more year or was last night his finale?
Teams will close the gap if PSU loses those two.
Re: Haines. I thought he was just fatigued. If there was an extra day, I think he wins. The two take downs O'Connor get in the third were - IMV - more sloppiness by Haines than anything special O'Connor did.
I'm not sure if I ever saw anyone as quick as Mike McGee was against RBY in the semis. His ability to get out of the bottom on RBY was impressive. He just exploded. But Vito looked even quicker last night. Not only did he find his target but his ability to finish was high class.
Love this stuff. Makes me want to break out my old wrestling shoes
That was an insane finish.
