We still need to focus on the line of scrimmage...

DefenseWins : 3/19/2023 3:19 pm
yes I know we would love a #1 WR, but both lines need to be solidified first. We are not there yet..

In this discussion that Pat McAfee had with JJ Watt... he says this exactly. I have the video cued up to right before JJ gets into it.
JJ Watts Comments on building the line of scrimmage as a priority - ( New Window )
Before viewing the Vid, I’ll just say this:

i think Schoen will get it done, but the urgency was responding quickly to the opening of FA. Once settled, i have full confidence that they will address what needs to be done, wherever possible.
agreed...

So FA, the draft, cuts, etc. are done? It's already September?
A'Shawn would be a step in that direction

By the numbers, the team currently has 68 players under contract, vs

90 man roster limit. That leaves 22 slots to go, with about 45 days before the 1st mini camp. If you figure 10 draft picks and maybe an equal number of UDFA guys, minus a couple of cuts, there will probably be only another 4 or 5 guys signed or re-signed before the draft.
Maybe, maybe not.

And line of scrimmage is a vague term. OL and DL. Does it include edge players in 2 and 3 man fronts? TEs?

They’ve already added a DL and MLB who should improve the run defense, and might add A’Shaun Robinson this week. And last year they made a significant investment in the OL in the draft and FA, so even though it’s not at the level we’d like to see, some posters are optimistic that we ll see improvement even without additions to the unit.

Why limit your thinking as to what needs to be done first? Or what’s a higher need? Or first or second day draft priory?

They’ll allocate resources to every facet of the roster as they deem best.

Personally, I’m curious to see what they do at center. I was mildly surprised they let Gates go, not thrilled they seem to like Feliciano, cautiously optimistic that they have another in house option, and very open to using a mid round pick on a potential starter. I’d prefer day 1 and 2 picks be used at the more expensive positions like WR,CB and Edge. Plenty of day 3 picks for depth “ line of scrimmage” guys as well as RB, TE, LB and S.

Patience is hard.

I dunno

Thibs, Ojulari, Dex, Leo, Nacho and maybe Robinson too is a pretty strong D line IMO
One thing to keep in mind
Dave on the UWS : 3/19/2023 4:45 pm : link
it was mentioned about Ezeudu that center "might" be his best position. Brederson looked last year, like center might also be HIS best position. They have some possibilities in house.

This D line was completely dominated by the Eagles. We gave up about 260 yards on the ground in the playoff game.

So, until we have proven to be dominant on the field (and not on paper), then we need to keep working on adding strength in this area.

Were you talking to me?

If so, I never suggested that they were done. Just that they need to continue placing heavy emphasis at building this as a strength of the team.

If they grab A'Shawn they will be alright on the line. As far as the Eagles, it was as much, if not more, the ILBs as the line and by that point Dex an LW were probably exhausted from all the plays they were in through the year.

And perhaps that operating on a shoe string budget they could replace Nick Williams and Davidson when they went down, Jelly and Mondeaux were so bad they preferred to go with a two man DL and played extra safeties as linebackers. It’s like we were almost always in dime packages, no wonder we couldn’t stop the run.

They are also rookies or 2nd year guys minus Leo/Dex. Also the LBs have been terrible. They added Okereke there. Eagles also ran over almost anyone

If we sign Robinson and davidson comes back and shows some development, our D line is much more stout. Throw in a beavers with Bobby O and front 7 looks pretty damn good. Would like one more lb who can play all spots and sub for ojulari if needed
I'd like to see them re-sign Nick Williams for depth
Tom in NY : 3/19/2023 5:33 pm : link
He'd fit very well as a 2nd team DE/DT for this team.
Have to figure he's going to get close to vet minimum, and would really help to give the team some solid depth.
Well, one thing I can assure
Simms11 : 3/19/2023 5:52 pm : link
you is that they will address Center at some point. Feliciano hasn’t been signed yet either. I think they’re considering drafting one of the many decent Centers in this draft. That will go a long way in solidifying that offensive line, of course Neal has to improve too. They might also consider adding more depth at OT and Guard in the draft too.
Spot On
ShocktoBeck : 3/19/2023 6:17 pm : link
Not that WR isn’t a glaring need, but games are won/lost at the line of scrimmage.
Want better production from DJ and Barkley? Build an OL that’s a strength rather than merely adequate.
I’d prioritise both lines over CB and WR. Watching what happened to Reese teams after the Accorsi OL got old should clarify that.

The Eagles are in our division so they will end up running over us twice and people here will still complain that we cannot beat the Eagles.

What you see with the Eagle's dominance on the line of scrimmage is what we should aspire to achieve. That is the goal. You can double a top WR and take him out of the game. Then what?

We need some things to happen and the sun and the moon need to align. You are not wrong but to me, that is not a solid plan.
Yes....please address the OL.
Since1965 : 3/19/2023 10:45 pm : link
No-one other than Thomas was a consistently good pass blocker. I get it that there needs to be some patience with some of the younger players, but it's unlikely that all of a sudden four of them will all of a sudden be good. A lot of the offense was designed to get rid of the ball quickly because the OL couldn't hold up. They need to add a stud.
