Anyone surprised that Darnay Holmes is still on the team?

BlackLight : 3/19/2023 4:49 pm
With $2.7 million saved by releasing him and a not-quite $200k dead cap hit, I kinda thought he'd be out the door.
A little but He’s a guy I’d see going down to cut down day
DavidinBMNY : 3/19/2023 4:51 pm : link
There is a decent chance he is released at that cap number at some point,
Darnay has one big problem
Vanzetti : 3/19/2023 4:52 pm : link
stupid and often unnecessary holding penalties. If he could ever break himself of that habit, he would be a good player.
I really
Straw Hat : 3/19/2023 4:52 pm : link
Wish we’d move on. Hes just bad in man to man coverage and is a penalty waiting to happen. I will admit he makes some clutch plays from time to time, especially against the run, but overall im not a fan.
He is a good player to have on the bench...
DefenseWins : 3/19/2023 4:56 pm : link
until your other bench players are better than him, then he will still be on the team.

So, you dont just get rid of the guy. Add another starting DB who can push Holmes farther down on the depth chart.
No.
robbieballs2003 : 3/19/2023 4:57 pm : link
Wink apparently loves him. He has a role on this team. You don't just cut players like him, especially at this stage of the offseason.
Not surprised.
Pepe LePugh : 3/19/2023 4:57 pm : link
He has a role in Wink’s defense. I do think he may have to accept a pay cut, like they did with Slayton last year.
it isn't 2.7 million saved
ElitoCanton : 3/19/2023 5:12 pm : link
It is really 1.4 million or so as he'd be replaced on the roster.

Agreed, and he’ll be better second year in the system. Let him play out the fourth year of his contract while those beneath him on the depth chart develop, and maybe he nets as a comp pick down the line.

He is exactly who I’m hoping Aaron Robinson, Rodarious Williams or a drafted rookie can push for the slot role as the season progresses.
WTF are you talking about
BillT : 3/19/2023 5:13 pm : link
That’s an absurd question. He’s a pretty big favorite of Wink and has played reasonably well. He’s not a star but has been effective in the role he was given. Surprised he’s still on the team? Try keeping up.
Coaches seem
section125 : 3/19/2023 5:14 pm : link
to like what he does. It seems they should be able to replace him.

Hmm … that’s quite a difference of opinion.
I 'kinda' agree with Bill
Fred-in-Florida : 3/19/2023 5:18 pm : link
Wink seems to like him. He plays tough and is decent against the run.

It's just his holding penalties at the most inappropriate time that drive everyone nuts.

No not surprised he's still on the team.
He’s one of our starting three at the moment
Rudy5757 : 3/19/2023 5:18 pm : link
It probably cost you more to replace him and it saves cutting it to at least want to get to the draft to see what you’re able to yes before cutting a quality player. Wink really seems to like him so even if we do drive someone I think he’s on the team next season.
I can see them
Biteymax22 : 3/19/2023 5:38 pm : link
Having him make the same transition Julian Love did to safety.
Nope he's a keeper
JerseyCityJoe : 3/19/2023 5:54 pm : link
He does alot dirty work. He's the type of guy that you really miss when he not out there knocking heads.

even with the warts, you can see the fiery attitude and physicality for a smaller player.

Plus why create a hole that you will just to have to fill - especially if the team isn't desperate for the cap space yet.

Even with the penalties, he's been really good value for a day 3 pick.
They're...
JohnG in Albany : 3/19/2023 6:07 pm : link
"holding" on to him.

I think Flott is the one to look at going forward. Dude needs to gain weight though.

No, im not surprised
Jay on the Island : 3/19/2023 6:28 pm : link
Wink clearly is a big fan of his and he is a very talented player. The penalties are maddening though and they often come at critical times. With the lack of talent at CB around the league it is no surprise to me that he is back.

If he can just cut down on the penalties then he could be an excellent player. Despite his lack of size he is a very physical player.
What CB talent have the Giants brought in to supplant him?
bLiTz 2k : 3/19/2023 6:44 pm : link
Seriously...this is a silly question considering what the CB depth chart looks like every training camp since he's been here.
Maybe he can
Darth Paul : 3/19/2023 6:55 pm : link
play a bit of safety for us next year too.
He is pretty solid, and a good tackler, but too many penalties
sb from NYT Forum : 3/19/2023 7:09 pm : link
...He had 9 called against him, which is tied for 4th most for DBs last year. He is tied for the most holding calls for DBs with 5.

Meanwhile he was only on the field for 59% of snaps.
No
Breeze_94 : 3/19/2023 7:16 pm : link
I’d be uninspired if he was playing 65% of the snaps come week 1. But as a depth guy? He’s a good piece to have. And whose to say that a guy entering his 4th year can’t get better. No point in cutting a 53 man caliber nickel back when you don’t have anyone better.
Why would WE be surprised?
Big Blue '56 : 3/19/2023 7:23 pm : link
Wink, by all reports, loves the guy. His opinion/assessment matters. Not ours
Good as a Backup
OntheRoad : 3/19/2023 7:32 pm : link

Probably better than who his replacement would be as the 5th or 6th CB.

Totally agree. He’s got a lot of talent, but needs to cut the penalties.
He played very, well at times.
Matt M. : 3/19/2023 8:19 pm : link
It seems most of his penalties were unnecessary as he was already in good position. With more confidence in the system and more coaching, I think he can be better.

He was making a ton of plays on the ball all summer last year. I'd like to see more of that in games.
He is Tough,
Jimmycal : 3/19/2023 8:33 pm : link
Smart, and dependably grabby
He's a grabber
Bill in TN : 3/19/2023 8:48 pm : link
because he is a "peeker", constantly looking into the backfield instead of playing his man. Very difficult trait to overcome.
No..
Bourne ‘86 : 3/19/2023 9:08 pm : link
He is one one the better, if not best tacklers we have in the open field.
Man coverage? Suspect. I’d rather have flott. But Holmes can tackle
i wish I had a dollar for each time
Hammer : 3/19/2023 9:16 pm : link
I've seen Holmes watching the play unfold 2 yards from where he is standing while doing nothing to help gang tackle the runner.

It's infuriating to me that he does this.

That being said, I'd bet that much to my consternation, he sticks around.
His cap # is pennies
LauderdaleMatty : 3/19/2023 9:22 pm : link
In todays NFL. He's got a lot of experience. I'll trust Wink on this one. Easy. Let him decide. See reason to cut him u less he gets buried on the Depth chart after draft and camp.

Yeah, we need a Flott/Holmes hybrid!
Wink loves the guy until he finds somebody better.
