The Giants sent the entire brigade down to Clemson's Pro Day. Wink Martindale, Bryan Cox, Eggs and Jerome Henderson. Wink really likes someone down there. Eggs worked out Thompson, who's currently being projected as a top 25-50 pick.
Simpson measured 6'2" 235 lbs. and had the following workout numbers:
40: 4.43
Bench: 25
3-Cone: 6.89
Vertical: 40.5"
Broad: 9'10"
Last 2 years: 124 tackles, 64 stops, 9 sacks, 6 PDs, 2 FFs
According to TheDraftNetwork:
Trenton Simpson has “explosive hitting power” and “electric range in coverage and pursuit,” per The Draft Network. Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale runs an ultra-aggressive scheme that relies on its inside linebackers to make athletic plays in the middle of the field. Simpson fits that bill perfectly, possessing rare tools and athleticism to get involved as a pass-rusher and coverage linebacker. |
Reports were he performed well in interviews during the Combine.
Steelers GM Omar Kahn and HC Mike Tomlin were also there, and took Simpson to dinner that night. He said he talked to the Steelers, Titans and Giants the most during his Pro Day. They may be a threat to select Simpson before the Giants can.
Is anyone throwing the remote if Simpson's the guy? Adding Simpson's speed and playmaking ability next to Okereke would completely transform this defense. 2 highly skilled, sideline to sideline ILBs that can play all 3 downs, and shift inside/out.

Does he have any medical flags or off field concerns?
Any chance he drops to us at 25?
Nice to see them doing their due diligence at least. And IMO Wink is the best DC we've had since prime Spags his first run here
Do you think we take Bresee over Simpson,if they are both available at #25?
I was thinking the same thing. I can't see the Giants taking an ILB at 25.

agree jay, id be pretty surprised if they dont pick a receiver, cb, or pass rusher.

After adding Okereke in FA a 1st round pick being used on another ILB seems like a luxury. They have Beavers, Davis, and McFadden competing for the other spot. I think they might draft another ILB but not until day 3.
I agree that they will take either a WR, CB, ER, or DT in round 1.

Thinking breese may slip and have some real value at 25 too

Can’t count on beavers, McFadden or Davis as anything more than situational
Maybe beavers if we are lucky. Get the best players. Imagine how much different D looks with 2 stud ILB and dline depth, especially if we sign ashawn and davidson pans out as serviceable. Be pretty damn electric

Kayvon Thibodeaux.
Love Simpson, Clemson has at least 4 defensive players Giants brass could be looking at
Every year BBI gets into groups that can only see their positional deficiency being the sole object for correction. The Giants are still a long way from being able to focus on a specific position group. Still far too many holes.
FWIW, Beavers, McFadden and Davis are not going to stand in the way of improvement at ILB(Simpson et al). Okereke is one of two necessary ILBs. You only need to look at the 49ers, Seahawks and even the Cowboys to see what two fast head hunters in the middle does for the defense. And Nacho is not going to keep them from going after upgrade along the Dline. Perhaps if they get Robinson they can look away from Dline.
Wink is adaptable. Like a chef, he can create from the ingredients he has available. Give him enough talent and he can fashion a workable defense.
Basically, the Giants are still talent deficient despite some FA upgrades. I still think they are merely an improved version of last year's team. They will still need to be almost turnover free and somewhat conservative on offense. Free agency has given them the flexibility to choose a few different positions at 25 and 57, they need not be dialed in only at WR and CB. They will not be "forced" to take a lesser player just to fill a hole; maybe they can get the #2 ILB or DL(resulting in a huge upgrade at that position, hypothetically) vs #5 CB or WR with only marginal improvement over what they have.
Fun time to be watching. I did not forsee Schoen being this active in FA.
I've been banging on the (just say no to) Ojulari drum for weeks.
