I'm a Tiki and Tierney fan and try to listen as much as I can. They have spent all day talking about the Knicks. I was a huge fan back in the Ewing days but have NO interest anymore. I know the NBA is popular in America but they also do not really drive ratings versus football and baseball. What's your opinion and interest level in the Knicks/Nets and NBA in general?
The talent is way better in the NBA, but I find myself enjoying watching the college game more.
I find the baseball talk to be boring as well though. Do I need to hear Tiki break down the Edwin Diaz injury?
That being said, the Knicks ran NY in the 90's. When the knicks were good, they were definitely the most popular ticket in town. I think part of it was because there was no local competition, whereas not the nets are close by.
The Knicks are the most talked about team right now in the NBA and are beating all the top teams around them. NY is a basketball city when the Knicks are hot and they are red hot right now.
Now, all you get are isolation plays and 3 point shots. Players hog the ball. And if you breathe on someone, it's a foul. Add the constant flopping, walking, carrying the ball (thanks to MJ) and arguing with the refs, and the game is unwatchable.
Regarding adults, in my circle of friends, relatives, co-workers, neighbors, parents of my kids' teammates, etc. here in NYC - I think I know maybe five people that regularly follow the NBA. This includes quite a few people who's kids play basketball at various levels (AAU, high school, youth). This also includes people that religiously follow the Yankees/Mets/Jets/Giants/Rangers/Islanders.
It's weird.
MSG is always sold out even when the Knicks were the worst team in basketball for 15 years. But when you see game highlights and on TV they arena's are generally full. Can't deny that. I would say the same thing can be said for the NHL as well and I think corn hole gets better ratings than hockey.
Also, I never hear anyone talking basketball in NYC (other than Evan, Tiki and Tierney). Yankees, Mets, Jets, Giants talk all over the place and all the time. Maybe with this resurgence it will change but I do not believe the buzz is there and I'm not sure it will come back unless they win a championship.
And Jalen Brunson could very well be the prince that was promised.
Tierney is always going to lean towards Knicms talk when they are good and right now they are 1 of the best teams in basketball..
all the other shows except Alan Hahn have people that shouodnt be talking basketball...
So the instead of pass first PGs isoing, it is wings and score first guards. Thats the difference..
As for the 3 point shot, i dont understsnd how it has ruinex the game? The game has evolved, guys are more talented and better shooters...Teams now habe 4 or 5 guys in their lineups that can shoot rather than 1 or 2...the game is more spread out, more free flowing but it doesnt mean there is no defense..that is a lie..
Just because guys dont get decked going into the lane, doesnt mean there is no defense being played..
Or the virtual elimination of charging in the game - watching a guy like Shaq just back his way into the paint, knocking down a defender who was just standing his ground. And the defender ends up getting called for a blocking foul when he was just trying to stand still. I've seen guys with the ball run into the back of a defender standing dead still, and the defender gets a blocking penalty. Not to mention the stupid charging arc under the basket. How about we let Justin Jefferson run 10 yards down the field and shove the DB to the ground and call PI on the defender. Or we deem offensive pass interference can't happen in the end zone.
Let's make the net in hockey a foot wider and six inches taller. Or allow corked bats in baseball.
If these guys are, as the NBA loves to claim, the greatest athletes in the world, they don't need the rules ignored or changed to help them. When is the last time you saw 3 seconds called in the NBA?
It’s all preference. I personally don’t like shootouts, but I get that a lot of fans do.
The NBA would be incredible if it was distilled like that but it will never happen.
Imagine in football calling a timeout and a 2nd & 15 now becomes a 2nd & 5. It’s ridiculous imo.
big men pounding the ball in the post to perimeter players dominating the ball.
This is something I'll never understand. To each their own, but preferring the college game to the pro game is cringeworthy to me. The level of talent differential is just so massive.
College is fun because of the atmosphere. People care about their colleges and people care about the brilliant March Madness bracket hype.
But as far as on-court products go? Not even a contest. The NBA game is so far beyond.
As far as national attention, it's in the mix for #2 with baseball both nationally and in NYC. They're only talking about it more now because the Knicks are in the playoff mix with a couple weeks left. It would be all Yankees/Mets if it were in August and they were in the same spot.
I feel like MLB/NBA is pretty even right now in terms of popularity although they do it differently. Although the ages of the two fanbases leans towards the NBA being in a better place 15 years from now.
The NBA would be incredible if it was distilled like that but it will never happen.
There’s many more than that. College still has what the NBA will never have - alumni who have attachment to a program for life. Rooting for “your school” is just so much more meaningful than the way most people ended up rooting for their pro team. It’s why college football does so well in the south. Add in that up until recently the players were unpaid, it was fun watching them compete for a title since that was the universal and only goal.
But I do agree, at this point 82 games is ridiculous and the amount of teams Laing the playoffs even more ridiculous.

agree. Completely nonsensical.

In 2023? Do you guys really want to go back to Hoosiers? Come on.
It’s all preference. I personally don’t like shootouts, but I get that a lot of fans do.
But they arent shoot outs, yeah teams get hot from 3, but if you watch every game, they arent just hoisting up shots..
and not every team just hoist up 3s..
It is the same game, the teams are jist built around wings rather than bigs and the teams have more 3 point shooters
I don't get anyone that would want to watch a game with the middle clogged up and only defending 20 ft in .
The 3 has opened up driving lanes and forced players to learn to guard 1 on 1 for 35 ft.
Sure the scoring is up but the game is wide open and cleaner because of it.
ISO has always happened but the good teams move the ball and get clean looks.
NBA is a great product on most nights , most arguments are stale old opinions of people that haven't attempted to watch a big game in years.
Turn on the Knicks vs. Heat this week and see if you don't get hooked.
Not the case in college football where there are interesting prospects in almost every conference.
And you actually see true innovation in style in CFB. CBB you see upstart teams mostly due to good fundamentals, D, and unselfishness because the talent is so thinly spread.
CFB is just a different animal imo.
30 years ago the defenders couldnt shoot or play a lick of offense
Tierney has been talking about the Knicks a lot for the past 2 months. If no one cares or people tune out it will stop. That doesn't seem to be the case. The only show I listen to on FAN is Tiki & Tierney. I find it entertaining and focused on NY sports unlike the garbage that comes before it and after it. I'm not an NBA fan at all and I don't change the station when they talk about the Knicks. Just my opinion.
I think the Knicks are good story right now. For the first time in decades they have a likable team that could grow into a contender with a little luck. The NBA demo seems to match up well with the core demo FAN is trying to reach. From a business standpoint Knick talk makes sense to me.
Gyms are empty for the first 14 non conference games in most cases even the students section.
The product is inferior in a big way and the one and done at most big schools doesn't bring any consistency.
As for the NBA... I think Ryen Russillo once cracked, "Isn't it funny how the NBA is the only pro sport where today's players are less talented than the players from 30 years ago?" When curmudgeons like Shaq and Barkley are always saying that the games and players aren't as good as they used to be, it opens it up for more people to complain.
In terms of athleticism and movement, today's NBA is superior to what it used to be. I remember a stat that said the average NBA player ran for about a mile in an average game back in the day, while these days it's more like 3-4 miles a game. And the skills involved in one-on-one play and shooting a basketball have never been higher.
On the other hand, you can argue a lot of fundamentals have eroded over the years, thanks to weak officiating, etc. Apart from a few exceptions like Jokic, very few understand how to play in the post. And with rampant "load management," you're seeing less compelling matchups on a daily basis. Maybe that doesn't matter for the casual YouTube fan, but it hurts people who shell out a lot of money to watch games live, only to learn that the visiting team's superstar isn't playing tonight.
Just look at the commissioners to see the differences between the NBA now and then. Stern was a hard-ass and he often went overboard in policing the players, but he did try to enforce the integrity of the game. Silver is tasked with growing a global brand and is more hands-off. This has led to player empowerment and a looser atmosphere that the young'uns love, but also more instances of bad behavior. I can't imagine how Stern would have responded to some of Kyrie's antics, or the Ja Morant stuff.
I don't long for the days of 78-70 games and players laying bricks left and right, but I do think the NBA is due for another evolution, either in play or in how the whole thing is run. If the league gets that huge TV contract it's angling for, it should be fine in the short run, but I'll be curious to see if it turns into more of a niche sport down the line.
So there's no place to run,at least when it comes to basketball on TV.You might have to watch this low quality bullshit style of basketball on every channel.

Because fewer games means more meaningful regular season and the playoffs are single elimination.

such a lousy take, lol.
using that criteria, you must like uconn football more than the Giants. Or uconn baseball more than whatever MLB team you might root for.

Dumbed down?? No. Try again. You just don’t like it.
The game is fine. Scoring is up because offensive players are simply better at scoring and shooting the outside shot. Defense is alive and well. Cerebral intelligent play is alive and well.
Passing yards and scoring are higher in the NFL because the rules were changes and now favor the qb and offense. They aren’t scoring more pts thx to talent, in the NFL. There’s no comparing the NFL passing yards explosion to the NBA scoring increase. None whatsoever.

What's even more troubling is the college game is adopting the same style.

Dont bother, dude is a troll who stopped posting in Knicks threads when they started winning..only posts after losses
This
I don't blame fans. The NBA encourages it by allowing commentators and retired players run down and trash the product at every opportunity on League-sanctioned Pre and Post game shows.
The skill level in the league is the highest it's ever been. The athletic ability is the highest it's ever been. They're taking the hardest-difficulty shot allowable and making it at a higher rate than ever. League's in a good place. They still need to fix the disaster that is any NBA game's last 2 minutes. Least-watchable thing in sports.

I can say with a lot of confidence, that you and I aren't watching the same thing.

This, too - and I’d add that the officiating could be more consistent and replay procedure should be streamlined - otherwise the sport itself is great to watch. Looking forward to tonight’s game.
You're wrong
Right now I don't post after wins or losses
Pretty soon you'll get it
I think as you get older, fans embrace baseball more. So I don’t think MLB is screwed because they don’t have the youth or NBA is in a great position in 15 years because they do.
I have no issue with the changes in the game as we have seen that with the NFL and MLB and I still watch a ton.
Maybe it's time to tune back in and give this team a chance.
Suoerteams habe been around for 50 years, the differnece now is players control where they go more..
The NBA right now has more parody than there has ever been..
NBA has always been top heavy, its the nature of having only 5 players on the court at once, 1 or 2 players can controle a game..
You hate players controlling where they go, and thats fine but dont act like supertrams are anything new
Is this a new development? I'm 40, and this has been the case as long as I've been alive. It's always been a haves and have-not league. If you have stars, you're a contender for a decade.

You could be right. Don't know for sure. I know the baseball demographic has been a concern with the sport for a while now which is why so many changes have been made to speed up the game for our more ADHD-type culture now.
But you're right, we don't know how the fandom will evolve.
