Georgetown in May and she never had the experience of even a good basketball team.
Weird, lateral move

I know Gtown has a better history than Provvy, but it's not like they are some massive school like Michigan or Florida that could pay massive $$$.

Same conference. Another, Catholic, basketball-only school. And Cooley is from Providence. Why would he leave after all these years just for Georgetown?

Tell her I feel her pain. I was there from Fall 2001- Spring 2005. Sweet 16 in 2001, Sweet 16 in 2006. Zero tournament appearances sandwiched between those two, which are the 4 years I was there.

Prestige and $$$. Get Georgetown back on the map and you are either getting another huge raise in a couple years or leaving for another program who will cut the check.

Yeah Georgetown has been living with ff the gravitas of John Thompson in the 80's and into the 90's, but since him they've really been mainly a dead end program. Cooley is easily the best coach they've had since Thompson.
Does G'Town have prestige anymore though?
Nephilim : 3/20/2023 2:01 pm : link
At some point prestige wears off. St John's had prestige in 80s but not anymore. Depaul once had a lot of prestige.

Absolutely. If he gets them back to relevancy it’ll be a big deal. Conversely, he’s likely taken Providence as far is it can go.

Can draw from the talent in DC, Md., and nearby Va without a major recruiting sell
Some locals understand, many feel he Joe Judged the end, including saying
“ Don’t be surprised if you see us in the Final 4 “ after PC just lost 4 of 5 to end the season, possibly knowing he was at least strongly considering a move.
Georgetown is much more willing to pay large up-front NIL payments
Metnut : 3/20/2023 2:07 pm : link
to potential recruits. Providence has really been behind on this from my understanding.

I was also there 2001-2005. I wonder if we know each other outside BBI. (Harbin 2 freshman year, where were you?)

My daughter just graduated from Providence, I am so disappointed. I think that he could've gone further, this team was relatively new this year, and even though they sort of went backwards at the end of the year, nobody thought they were going to be any good coming into the season. Young team. And the 2020 team was on a tear at the end of the year beating like 9 ranked teams in a row before they canceled the NCAA tournament. That was heartbreaking, they were peaking at the right time and a lot of people thought they would have done some damage in that NCAA tourney.

Cooley is a promoter first and foremost. GTown is hiring him to make people care about GTown basketball again. Certainly not hiring him because he's a top line coach.

Georgetown hasn't done anything as an organization to suggest that they should have access to any of the truly top line coaches. They've funded and treated the program as a third-rate operation.

Having said that, I do think Cooley is a really strong coach. He constantly gets the most out of his players, and I think he checks a lot of boxes for the university beyond that. (And for the avoidance of doubt, what I am referring to is character, good organizational citizen, etc....of course, notwithstanding the mud that some butt-hurt Providence fans are slinging at him online).

I'm not extremely excited about the hire, but this is about as good as I could have reasonably expected them to do.

Pitino is a better coach, but I never thought there was a snowball's chance in hell that the the administration/board at Georgetown would truly consider him considering the baggage.

I know a number of Providence alum/fans and they are
Metnut : 3/20/2023 3:42 pm : link
pretty shell shocked. Cooley had talked for a while about Providence being his dream job and they seem pretty betrayed that he's leaving.

Never really liked Georgetown hoops (nothing serious, just rivalry between ND/Gtown back in the Big East days and some fun trips to games in DC and getting into it with their fans) but Big East and college hoops as a whole is better off with them relevant.

IMO, it's a home run hire for the Hoyas. Cooley is a relentless recruiter and I think he's going to be fielding top 10 rosters in Georgetown, maybe even right away, given how relentless he is with the transfer portal. He's a good coach too. You don't make the NCAA tournament 2/3 of the years out of Providence without being able to coach.
I am really disappointed Ewing fell so flat on his face
Matt M. : 3/20/2023 4:11 pm : link
I really wanted him to succeed, mostly to get a shot in the NBA. He is highly regarded as an NBA assistant in coaching D and big men. He may not be cut out for HC gigs, or at least not in college where recruiting is the key.

There was a time you would never see a coach go from one team to another in the same conference. But this is always about the money.

First of all, Cooley is a very good coach. Anyone saying otherwise is not being fair.

Secondly, when the dust settles you will have to look at his new contract. I am sure G’town is throwing a lot of money at him that Providence could not match. Just compare the endowments of the two schools.

And finally and most importantly, everything in NCAA going forward is going to be dictated by access to NIL money for recruits. BTW I am certain that is why Willard left the Hall for Maryland smaller schools with less affluent alumni are going to be hurt badly by NIL.

I am guessing Cooley saw the writing on the wall and realizes that Gtown and it’s alumni will give him greater access to NIL money to pay new players.

Matt, not a Georgetown fan here, but I thought the Big Fella would do well with the Hoyas. As you mentioned, he was highly regarded as an NBA assistant coach & there was a lot of talk-if memory serves-why he wasn't getting interviews for NBA HC gigs.

Mullin, Ewing...just two latest examples of former program greats falling flat on their face as the HC of their alma mater. As a Heels fan, I fear the same for Hubert Davis, who I'm completely out on as of this minute.

I am happy that the Hoyas are trying to restore their program. Cooley is certainly not the hire I had hoped for but he is a good coach with a proven track record. Poaching a coach from another conference members is in my mind a terrible look, but I agree that the Big East needs the Hoyas and St. Johns (and DePaul) to be relevant again. If Cooley can come close to the success of the Hoya men's and women's soccer programs it will be a big win for the school and the conference.
