I’m sure the numbers are quite favorable for us
If he impressed Schoen/Dabol/Wink in this short of a time.....

to garner a three year deal.....

I wonder if we found someone who can really contribute in our defensive backfield.

Excited if he turns out to be a diamond in the rough.
he was projected late rd last year before tearing acl pre-draft
Eric on Li : 3/20/2023 1:46 pm : link
a 3 year deal is essentially giving him the remainder of a rookie contract. the 3 year commitment indicates they like him closer to a draft pick than a udfa. interesting.

with me, but this signing has no bearing on what we do at #25. Neither does any other for that matter.

Per draftscout.com, here's how LJ performed on his pro day:

Height: 6003
Weight: 194
Wingspan: 75 1/2"
Arm: 31 1/8"
Hand: 8 1/2"
40: 4.50
Broad Jump: 10'5"
Vert: 33"
Bench: 12 reps
3-cone: 6.65

From Pro Football Network:

Positives: Nice-sized, physical cornerback who mixes it up with opponents and fires upfield to defend the run. Effectively diagnoses plays, quickly picks up assignments, and is most effective facing the action. Physically beats down opponents to defend the throw and competes against bigger opponents.

Negatives: Must improve his footwork, as he’s all over the place and off-balance backpedaling. Slow in transition, late reacting to receiver’s moves, and struggles in downfield coverage. Never really lived up to expectations.
Keep rounding out the competition
Matt in SGS : 3/20/2023 1:52 pm : link
at CB. Not sure how long the leash is on Adoree after this coming year. Need someone to push Williams and Robinson. He's also about 15+ pounds heavier than Flott. But at 6'1", it looks like he fits the taller corners that Wink likes
Standard UDFA deal, no?
Big Blue Blogger : 3/20/2023 1:53 pm : link
Just a year late. Probably the same deal Tomon Fox got: Three years at the minimum salary, with maybe a little spending money up front.
There
AcidTest : 3/20/2023 1:57 pm : link
was a thread stating that the Giants were poking around the DB market but decided that the available FAs were too expensive. Johnson may have been plan B, just like Smith, Campbell, Slayton and Waller were the plan B when the Giants decided that trading for a WR was too expensive.

Pretty clear that Schoen is using these signings to build the depth, just like he did last year during the draft when he traded down to get more picks. These signings in fact may indicate that the Giants might use some of their day three picks to trade up in rounds two and three.
Maybe he can compete for some Julian Love snaps.

are you suggesting that the Giants signed this guy to a 3 year deal so they could disguise their desire to draft a CB with their first pick?

This is essentially a UDFA signing one year late because he was coming off an ACL. So he should be viewed as an undrafted rookie free agent and nothing more at this stage.

ryanmkeane : 3/20/2023 3:14 pm : link
this was SI's draft profile of Johnson:

Pros:
Outside cornerback who is primarily deployed in press. Johnson is pesky at the line of scrimmage with active hands and the ability to counterpunch. Throwing off route timing allows him to sit on underneath routes. Possessing lower body flexion he has good change of direction ability. Johnson plays through the catch point very well, often knocking the ball out late. He shows a willingness to come downhill in run support.

Cons:
Average speed that he does not trust causes Johnson to get grabby downfield. He is often late flipping his hips, staying square for too long and letting receivers run on his toes or blow-by. A lack of play strength allows receivers to push him off consistently. In man coverage he panics when the ball is in the air, arriving too early and getting flagged. He is a poor tackler who just throws his shoulder around. Getting blocked by receivers happens too frequently. Johnson looks back for the ball after the first break causing him to get surprised by double moves. He can be slow to line up against the no-huddle offense.
No sure what all the talk is about

...a CB that ran a 4.5 40 before blowing out his knee.

UDFA, fine... but thinking he might actually fill a slot this year?!? Please.

Future practice squader at best, IMO.
the fact that this was put out as a 3 year deal still says something
Eric on Li : 3/20/2023 3:27 pm : link
the reason UDFA's have leverage and sometimes decent gtd$ is because there is a competition for their services from teams who think those players DRAFTABLE grades. the ones who dont have good grades get try out deals or very little gtd$. and the cattle call marketplace for that is a pretty specific event that's unique to post-draft. over the rest of the nfl calendar those same guys are basically on week to week contracts w/ practice squads.

maybe whoever put this out did so with explicitly misleading language relative to any other signing, as always we'll see what the guarantee is, but i would think it's going to be more in line with the better UDFA deals that go to guys who teams considered having draftable grades.

No.

This is essentially late UDFA signing, nothing more.

"Put out"... the agent "put it out."

UDFAs sign multi-year deals, just like all of the UDFAs last year and the year before and the year before, etc.

Agreed. This is the equivalent to signing maybe a 5th or 6th rounder tops. They like what they see and are taking a flier on him. This in no way will impact whether they were considering a CB in round 1 or 2 or not.

I got ya. To me the gist of the signing was that the team wanted to maintain multiple years of control over him like a late round pick or an early UDFA. So it's no biggie if you delete my reply.

He’s an UDFA who is coming off a torn ACL and wasn’t signed by any team last year. This is a basic UDFA contract and it has absolutely zero impact on the Giants draft plans.

is a deal "in line with one of the better udfa deals" not still a udfa deal? let's see what the guaranteed $ is, some udfas get nothing and some get gtd$ close to what draft picks get. last year they gave corbin close to what most 7th rounders get.
