Or was it Julian Love just be not wanting to pay NY/NJ state income tax?
Either way, good player, but he choose to chase the money over staying with the NYG. His loss, not ours. I wish him luck in Seattle.
Julian Love reportedly blew chance to stay with New York Giants for more money - (
New Window )
Yes, true, but the article stated that in between the time Love rejected the Giant offer and went to visit Seattle, the Giants had already committed to Slayton. So Love did indeed give the Giants an opportunity to match the Seattle offer, but there was no money left. It went to Slayton. "Bird in the hand" I think was the way it was termed by Dugan.

upon which this was based, Love and his agent gave the NYG the chance to match the SF offer and the NYG said no.

So I guess all the posters that talked about signing Slayton vs. Love were not complete idiots after all.
As a fan, Love staying and Slayton going was a slam dunk FOR ME..
The experts in the room prevailed. As it should be.
This!! I was just thinking the same thing. This board gets fired up about an average player.

Pinnock showed when McKinney was out that he can be a bigger, faster, younger, cheaper, harder hitting version of Love. Love had the chance during the bye week to sign. Then McKinney gets hurt, and four months later the Giants decide not to match a lower offer? Love would be in NY if the Giants felt like they needed him.
$6 million/year is not overpaying for Love.
$10 million? Sure, let him walk. $6 million is what he is worth, IMO. Details of his contract aren't out, but I am sure his cap # for 2023 is less than $6 million, probably comparable to Slayton's.
Meanwhile, I just can't agree with Slayton's $4.2 million cap number.

Absolutely. My point was, if I had a choice of keeping Love or Slayton, it would be Love. Otherwise, I agree.
I like the player but it’s his own fault he got less. It’s not cheaper to live in Seattle.
I’m not sure if Love starts in Seattle but he was always going to be second to McKinney with the Giants.
Rosenhaus is a good agent and does what’s best for his client.

When you see the numerous comments on threads where it is mentioned that "the Giants overpaid for......." this is a huge reason why. A player will obviously be apt to sign for less money with a team that is located in a more financially advantageous state.

If he was really good why didn’t he tell Love to take the Giants earlier offer? Instead it seems he advised his client to go into FA and ended up signing signing for less than what was offered months ago.
Doesn’t seem like such a good move by Love or his agent. I do agree Drew is usually a pretty good agent but he wasn’t on top of his game in this instance.
Exactly. Fortunately, Love plays safety. And that's one of the more fungible positions in the sport.
Respectfully, that's why we're here, and they're there.
If it was a poker match headed to showdown, most logical people are taking Love, not Slayton. But, pair of 7s vs 8s is not anywhere near a bad beat.

Yeah, obviously Jon, clearly you nor I understand how screwed the Giants would be without his 43 yards per game.

Jimmie, that’s a dank response. Where would we be without missed 4th down interception…whiffs…for a dagger touchdown against a bitter rival?

1. WA and FL have a lot of taxes besides Income Taxes and
2. half the games are played, and taxed, by other states
so while there is a diff, it is not as clear cut as comparing income tax rates
Second of all, the value for S is not what it once was. Third, the landscape of S changed for the Giants after the bye week. They got a look at a few other S options on their roster when McKinney went down. It is actually one position group that had decent depth. Further, Love's play took a slip back when McKinney was out. Is he still a good to very good S? Yes. But, he certainly no longer looked like a star, which may have factored in to the decision.
I wish Julian well in the Pacific Northwest.

Correct. WR is a prime position. S is not. Additionally, the Giants had a greater need at WR. This isn’t difficult to understand.
