NFT: History of the World Part II

Anybody watching this on Hulu? At this point, after so many years, in this climate, I didn't have great expectations. But, this is really bad. Yet, I force myself to keep watching hoping for one nugget from Brooks' past.

Man the original, along with the other Brooks movies from that era, was hysterical. This is rubbish.
I figured it would be unwatchable.

And a disappointment... lol so I have held off.

One of the scenes my brother and I used to crack up over from the original

Bernaise: You ate yours, these are mine.
Count de Monet: Au contraire, they are mine! I paid for them! Hand them over!
Bernaise: [mimicking] Au contraire, I paid for them! These - are mine!

lol phuucquing classic
I didn't think it was "that bad"

But it's not good. Some of it is awful.
Some of it is cute.

As you said, I had no expectations because of the climate. It was free.

Oh man. "Count de Money, Count de Money"

"De Monet! De Monet!"

Cracks me up everytime. And Gregory Hines / Madeline Kahn is freaking gold.

Ha no doubt. It's been a while so I have been thinking about watching it again.

of identity politics and pathetic writing, this has no chance. Brooks is what? 98 he had virtually no involvement with this.

That's what I've been thinking. There is nothing with his stamp on this other than the original movie was his.

Some of the Jesus stuff was mildly funny, but most of it was just dumb and/or cringe.

It's a pointless affair. None of the sketches have any zing or bite. It's mostly a bunch of otherwise funny people doing dumb, uninspired shit and hoping for a laugh.

I mean...what if the Underground Railroad was actually a railroad. You know, like the Subway. Har har har.
Did Part 1 have any bite?
TheOtherManning : 3/22/2023 12:20 am : link
All the stuff quoted in this thread is from bits of silly farce with funny accents and costumes laid on top. That's always been more of Mel Brooks' zone - silly, zany, whack. Borscht Belt comedy. George Carlin he ain't.
The lord Jehovah has given me these 15...

and parts are unwatchable. This series is more along the lines of the Friedberg and Seltzer parody movies (disaster movie, meet the spartans) than Mel Brooks.

Some parts however are amusing and clever. The Jackass parody with Rasputin is good at first. In the end I will watch because you know, Mel Brooks, but it has been a struggle at times and there sure as hell won't be any rewatches.

I agree with this. It was funny but not "Mel Brooks" funny but that's to be expected because he wasn't involved in the writing (or minimally involved.) I liked the running gag about the Underground Railroad being the Subway and Anastasia Romanov on Tik Tok was amusing. I also like how they shoehorned the show's name into parts, which is making fun of a common bad movie trope. I don't get why the Jewish food vendor guy and his family tied everything together. They weren't that funny IMO.
Part 1 vs Part 2
Csonka : 3/22/2023 5:54 pm : link
The difference is that Harvey Korman, Dom Deluise and Madeline Kahn were just a lot funnier than this crew.

I agree about that family tying together a great deal of it. The running gags you mentioned I thought were funny 1 time. But, as running gags, they were tired quickly.

I don't know for certain, but I would be confident i guessing that Brooks didn't write any of this. It just doesn't seem like his stuff, even accounting for age and the changing climate.
