any emmanuel forbes/msu fans out there?

Eric on Li : 3/21/2023 11:59 pm
most of the consensus ranks have him in the early second round (jeremiah has him 38) but with his ball production and athleticism im not sure he gets out of the first. kiper and mcshay appear to be the high men right now, both have him top 25. despite jeremiah's ranking, his blurb on him reads pretty good for a non-first rounder:

Quote:
38 Emmanuel Forbes
Mississippi State · CB · Junior
Forbes is a rail-thin cornerback with outstanding instincts and ball skills. He is at his best in off coverage, where he utilizes his unique route awareness to drive and make plays on the ball. He collected three pick-sixes this past fall. He doesn't have any wasted movement and is always under control. In man coverage, he can press and mirror underneath while possessing enough speed to carry vertical routes. He does an outstanding job of playing the pocket at the catch point and poking the ball away downfield. He needs to improve his tackling, though, as he has too many fly-by misses. Overall, Forbes' weight will be scrutinized at the NFL Scouting Combine, but his tape is outstanding.

admittedly in whatever msu games ive seen the last few years, they werent ones where he stood out but more than a few things stand out on his resume:

nobody has the ball production he has, 14 ints in 3 years, 6 pick sixes over his career (fbs record) and since it's the sec it means even more. 1 of his pick 6's was against levis. not many guys play bama and uga in back to back games during their draft year and live to tell about it (combined they targeted him 10 times, completed 6 for 52 yards).

at the combine he ran a 4.35 with a 1.48 split and he has 32.5 inch arms. each of those is better than christian gonzalez (though gonzalez edged him out on the flying 20 with a 1.81 to his 1.82). so elite ball production, elite speed, near-elite length.

in 107 man coverage snaps last season he allowed a passer rating of 1.4.

as noted in the blurb above the big flag is size - he weighed just 166 pounds at the combine. which is 9 pounds lighter than even cordale flott. but if nyg were willing to roll the dice on flott's movement and ability to hold up in the sec, forbes appears to be an upside play way beyond that. if he was 10-15 pounds heavier he's probably in the top 10 conversation with witherspoon and gonzalez.

so any msu fans out there who've seen a lot of him?

To like CBs who can tackle in space
Forbes seems too small to be a 3 down cb a d not worthy of a first round pick.
Perhaps in the 2nd,but again he doesn't seem to be a fit for us...
IMHO
they already have a guy like that

in Flott. If he were 15 lbs heavier, he was projected as a first rounder. Giants picked him in 3rd, if he fills out (he's over 6 ft), he would be an excellent starting corner.

put flott at whatever weight you want, he wouldn't have been a first round pick. he was a developmental player in all respects. weight aside he wasnt an impact player at lsu and didnt create turnovers, which is why he didnt make all america teams, or all sec teams, or get thorpe consideration.

it also occurs to me that last year the nyg rolled the dice on more than 1 player considered close to 'off the charts' because of a height/weight measurement. as a prospect forbes is actually maybe closer to wandale than flott in the sense that both dominated in the sec but werent as widely known bc they didnt do it for a top tier school.
I like him

I just think there will be better players at #25, perhaps even at the CB position, but I agree he's in that next group that if he were to fall to #57, would be a good pick. I don't see that happening.

4.35 (1.48 10-yard split) corners don't grow on trees.

i think it's 50-50 he's even there at 25. SEC corners with 32.5 inch arms and ball skills who run 4.35 dont grow on trees. i would take him over roger mcreary and probably kaiir elam any day of the week.
Not in 1st rd
Rave7 : 3/22/2023 11:08 am : link
but 2nd rd I'm ok.
166 lbs really concern me after I saw Flott get manhandled in the run game and he is 9 lbs heavier than Forbes.
So no thanks in the 1st rd.
marcus jones was 5'8 174 with 29 inch arms last year at combine

i think a lot of teams wish they had a do over there. like forbes he had stand out ball production and that translated.

the tackle/strength concerns are not invalid but in the nfl today movement and ball skills can make up for a lot with the rules the way they are.
here were forbes tackling numbers compared to flott's over sec careers
Eric on Li : 3/22/2023 11:27 am : link
flott = 536 run snaps, 83 solo, 17 asst, 14 missed tackles (12.3%), 33 stops, 2 ff.
forbes = 915 run snaps, 130 solo, 21 asst, 30 missed tackles (16.6%), 63 stops, 1 ff.

similar to flott when you watch his highlights he doesnt seem to have any issues throwing his body around, the stops number in particular is really good. he had more than twice as many stops as christian gonzalez for example. but also similar to flott the laws of physics exist and he does miss tackles because he's lighter than basically everyone else.

Winks LOVES sticky glue cover corners because it unlocks all the exotic blitz stuff he loves to unleash from anywhere and everywhere. He might be a bit light but if they feel he is sturdy enough or can put a little more weight on the frame I see no reason why he wouldn't be really highly graded on our board.
Reading on Forbes
allstarjim : 3/22/2023 12:38 pm : link
I thought I read he played a lot of off-coverage and zone, which seems to be what I've seen in my very little bit of watching him portends.

Not that it means a whole lot, but when deciding between him and others, Wink I think prefers a stronger, more physical corner that can matchup in man-press.

Not that Forbes can't do that, just something that bears some further study for me or maybe some of you other guys who have watched more of him can speak to that.

And of course, very much looking for Sy's review on him and everyone else.

More great points All-Star. More analysis probably needs to be done here before drawing a confident conclusion
