Jordan Addison pro day results and discussion

allstarjim : 3/22/2023 11:03 am
A lot of discussion on Addison as a potential first round pick.

He didn't do a lot of timed drills at the combine just 40 (4.49), vert at 34" and broad at 10'2". He stood on those performances.

The speed is adequate, the 10-yard split of 1.56 is really average. The leaping numbers are what I would say below average.

On to the Pro Day:

https://usctrojans.com/news/2023/3/21/thirteen-trojan-draft-prospects-showcase-at-usc-footballs-pro-day.aspx

He ran the 3-cone and short shuttle...7.05 (average) and 4.15 short shuttle.

The 3-cone would've been second worst in the class of all WRs tested at the combine. The short shuttle would've been 3rd best.

I have major concerns with these numbers. I know, tape beats all and with Pickett at Pitt in 2021, functioning as the main target in that offense, he really had the lion's share of looks and production in the receiving game there, he was unbelievable. But one would expect a little more with Caleb Williams last year, although his production in 11 games was nothing to sneeze at, and did lead all USC receivers in yards and TDs, 875 and 8 respectively.

But the explosion numbers are a concern. Coupled with the size, he's a slight guy at 5'11" and 173 lbs, and smaller hands (shade under 9"), I think all-in-all, I'm taking him out of first round consideration, but like him as a 2nd round pick. Obviously, no one expects him to fall out of the top 50, but stranger things have happened.
Heard that the weather was terrible

Was it held outside?

Indeed, it was a huge rainstorm, which precluded him from running the 40. My understanding is that drills other than the 40 were ran indoors. Not enough room in the indoor facility to conduct the 40, though, so that would've had to been outside, and weather precluded him from running in that environment, which was probably a good decision. Others did run the 40, however, and top time was recorded by Terrell Bynum at 4.5. All the attendees that also attended the combine declined the 40 at the Pro Day.
Sounds like a second rounder

To me.
Just saw the comments on weather.

That could have an impact so I withdraw my comment.
If Addison is available at 25

we gotta take him don't we???
He runs good routes
Biteymax22 : 3/22/2023 11:45 am : link
Gets open and catches the ball. He's a good WR and would be a fit in our offense. I wouldn't be shocked to see him high on Daboll/Schoen's list.
Bottom line

Is he’s football fast with pads on. Watch him on tape …
He’s twitchy , quick and gets open. I think he’s a 1st rounder.
He’s football

Fast.

If anything, these numbers are a blessing for the Giants as he may actually make it to 25.
A 4.5 40 at 175 LBs?
cosmicj : 3/22/2023 12:20 pm : link
Why wouldn’t we take Zay Flowers instead?
Tape on Addison is too good
CornerStone246+17 : 3/22/2023 12:27 pm : link
It clearly shows an incredibly advanced route runner against all types of CBs.

I see him as a better Jarvis Landry who ran like a 4.7 but was really really good in the NFL until injuries slowed him down.

Better ball skills, I would say. Flowers I've talked about a lot, and I like him. Wouldn't throw the remote, but my concern is related to drops and his physical stature and match-up with physical corners who can match him in athleticism, which is not a long list. But if you put on the tape of him vs Sauce Gardner in 2021, Gardner shut him down. Now, Gardner may be the best corner in the NFL right now, and he shut down a lot of guys last year, but it still gives me a little pause.

No doubt Flowers is going to make a lot of plays in the NFL. At #25 if I go receiver I want the whole package, guy who can reasonably project to be a #1 receiver that is a problem for DC's to scheme against.

I think Hyatt's overall threat capability would be a great fit for the offense, especially vis-a-vis the impact to weaker boxes for Saquon. I'm drooling with what Saquon would be able to do when defenses have to worry about Hyatt killing them over the top.

Great route running takes 1/10 off bad 40 time

Daboll loves separation
Running crisp routes really helps. And yes, he runs fast with pads on
Still would like oline or cb.

Agreed. CB might be more BPA when we pick but I do love Addison.
The testing
gameday555 : 3/22/2023 12:54 pm : link
Definitely matches the tape. He will never win with overpowering athleticism nor speed. Still, his production in multiple schemes and overall film would suggest that he'll likely be a solid NFL player, but that might not be enough for some teams in the first round.

Not saying I agree with it, but I could see someone like Jalin Hyatt going in front of him because of the perceived "upside".
Schoen and Daboll have both said

the tape on the field is their primary indicator. They don't "fall in love with workout warriors in shorts". Its a part of the equation, but the tape is the main thing. This guy looks the part on the field and his workout numbers weren't "horrible".
those are really bad numbers

I haven't done much youtube scouting with the prospects this year but those numbers scare me.

For a potential 1st round option.

As it should be. I wouldn't throw the remote, but the testing does lower my expectations a bit. And I acknowledge, there's a lot more to route running than just quickness out of breaks and so forth. But the explosion numbers and physical measurements are troubling to me at #25. I'd prefer a player that checks all the boxes.
Good

Might make him drop to where we are picking.

What is odd is the 3-cone is slow and the shuttle is fast. They kind of measure the same thing: explosiveness, change of direction.

You’re making a straw man argument. Both game tape and workouts are important. We’ll know a lot more after this offseason but my current view is that Schoen and co. rely a lot on advanced athletic metrics and a pro day like this from Addison rules him out as a first rounder.
