NFT: Laid Off from My Job Today

DaddyM89 : 3/22/2023 3:01 pm
After four years at one of the tech giants that had mass layoffs. I won't name the company here but you can probably figure it out if you look in the news today. They eliminated almost my entire department. Really heartbroken as this was the first job I actually really liked and was paid/compensated fairly after a string of horrible jobs in my 20s. Have few months of severance which helps but scary times considering the current economic climate.

Anyways will reset for a week or two and then will be looking for something in the tech field product/product specialist related. Keep your head up out there BBI.
I am sorry - bad break.
Giant John : 3/22/2023 3:03 pm : link
Hoping you land something better.
Sorry to hear that

Been there. It's awful, but it sounds like you're well-qualified, you have great experience and any company would be lucky to bring you on.

what do you do?

my company is in tech, and we work with your company (tangentially - if I am right on who it is) and we are hiring a lot of roles.

Good luck

I hope you will consider it an opportunity to re-evaluate your career.

Not in expert, but here in NH and VT there it seems to be a robust job market and the lifestyle is family friendly.
Thanks for the kind words everyone appreciate it

Where do you live? a lot of our jobs are remote, but some in product success (which is what our term is for what your job sounds like) they want a specific region.
It's probably for the best

Time to move on and find something better. I was at my job for 11.5 years and they called me up out of nowhere to tell me I was done. I said yep, boring, saw that one coming and told them I didn't care really because I just started my new job a week before they let me go.
Super tough time right now

too much of this happening and I fear more to come.

There is little job stability today vs what there was say 40-50 years ago.

Anyone who possesses a skill that others need should consider going into business for him/her self. Then, you at least can control your own destiny.
Consider DoorDash or UberEats

For some immediate income. You can work whatever hours you want, a woman at my bible study makes over $1k a week but that consists of a lot of driving. I'm doing it while I try to a land a new gig. Good luck & God Bless.

working in and around IT for the past 25 years, I've been there before when the layoffs hit. Mine usually have come at such perfect times in my life- a month before my wedding as the .com bubble burst, a few months after my 2nd child was born following the 2008 crash, and back in 2021 with Covid.

Fortunately, I had always saved for a rainy day along the way and got decent severance to keep going. I've been fortunate that when I was let go, I was only out of work for a few weeks & landed and was able to double dip income with severance (I highly recommend if you can pull it off.)

I'm sure you will get the same advice, use your network, reach out to old friends/co-workers. There are lots of short term consulting gigs out there. I was looking into one but landed a full time spot so didn't need to do it. But I'd suggest setting up your own LLC for tax purposes and most of the consulting jobs I was considering required it for their books. I'd recommend you take the time now to get that in place so you have that as an option if needed. Many companies have adopted a "try before you buy" where they will hire as a consultant and decide to convert to full time.

Good luck, you'll land on your feet. Take a few days to clear your mind and then get at it.
unfortunate
J : 3/22/2023 4:06 pm : link
glad you're planning to take a breather

My employer might have a req or two open for domain leads/application owners. Might also be remote. Work mostly with internal stakeholders and sometimes with vendors. Stakeholders are global, though, so you'd be expected to have a flexible schedule (late nights for APAC, early mornings for APAC+EMEA meetings), but you might still get away with a 45-50 hr week.
So sorry to hear that.

Not sure if any of you are aware of the WARN Act?

If there are layoffs by a company that results in 50 or more employees, the company has to notify the government 60 days prior to the layoff date.

There are websites for each state. Just Google WARN Act with the state 2 letter initials for their site.

Here is New York data base. There is one there for the JFK Hilton that the layoff date is 6/1/2023

https://dol.ny.gov/warn-notices

I'm sorry. It sounds like you have sales experience, I could always use a sales person. If you want to email me your resume' I can pass it to our President and see what he thinks. My guess is that it would be a 1099 deal with commission but we do have a product that is currently without a sales person. Fire me an email at joeftriano@gmail.com and let me see if I can help. Despite my persona and history here, I'm an excellent person to work for and with. And modest!
Hang in there my man.

Layoff is one of the toughest things in life. The stress is always draining you even if you got a decent severance. Try to enjoy the time off while job searching and good luck.

I remember having 17 years into a company, I was called into HR one Friday morning to let me know they were laying me off. I had a 2 year old and a 6 year old at the time.

I was devastated, but looking back at it all these years later? It was the best thing to ever happen to me career wise.

I am sorry to read about your layoff and wish you the best on your new journey.
Hey man, I know it sucks but keep your chin up

We're the same age and I'm also in tech in NYC (for some reason, I remember everyone who was on BBI back in the day and was my age when I graduated in 07), and something similar happened to me early on in the pandemic days.

I have a lot of contacts at SaaS startups in NYC (100-500 employees) and if you came from one of the big tech companies, I'm sure there's a ton of smaller employers that would love to have you (and would likely treat you better anyway).

Drop a line to my alt email if you want (meratelos@gmail.com) and we can talk a little further.

We aren’t a profit center and are trying to position ourselves as a revenue center but are lagging. We have basically two months to prove ourselves which I appreciate as it will allow our team to shift our focus while looking for better opportunities. .

Good company. Dont want to leave but our sales are lagging in this economy and don’t see improvement next two quarters.

This is what severance covers.

Good luck, take a breath and try not to take it too personally.

newjacksm : 3/23/2023 12:26 am : link
I think the tech industry hasn't hit its peak yet.

Currently the company I am working for has slowed down hiring and has shown no layoffs.

Paused hiring in certain departments and shifted; but has for sure continued to hired in certain departments. I trust leadership that didn't go spend crazy and need to make any drastic changes in the future. They really werent allowed too like some of the major tech companies were allowed too.

Happy to talk more if you'd like over LinkedIn or via E-Mail.

I am sure you will find a great opportunity for yourself. If it does take a bit longer than you want I would recommend you keep yourself busy. Exercise, keeping up to speed in your field, learning something new, etc. Best of luck.
I was laid off in early Jan.
Scyber : 3/23/2023 8:58 am : link
Also in tech. It was scary b/c there were a ton of layoffs at the time. But my interview schedule was very busy. Despite the layoffs there were a good amount of opportunities out there. Took a little longer than I had hoped, but I started my new role earlier this month and I am very happy with it so far.

I'd also point out that while their have been a ton of layoffs from top tech companies in the news, most of them are still above their 2020 levels in hiring. So we are still at a net positive in tech companies over the last few years.

It sucks to be laid off, but keep your head up. There is lots out there. You have a severance, take some time to clear your head and get it in the right space. Then hit linkedin and find you next role. It is out there.
I’m impressed in regard to all the assistance everyone is offering

I did this for a while and it was one the funnest things I've ever done. You're your own boss but the thing that sucks is your car gets beat up and people always bitch just about everything.

But yeah, like I said it sucks you have to use your own car ... unless you're using your old company's vehicle for deliveries. Hehehehe. Wasn't me. Caught me on the counter? Wasn't me.
