Starting early to make the case to trade down.

Spider56 : 3/22/2023 4:04 pm
Unlike years past we’re not drafting in the top 10 and there will be no blue chips left at 25. At least amongst fans, there’s no consensus on the most pressing need. The best WRs will be gone ... OC is a clear need, but goes against the premium pick / premium position view. DL is a possibility as is a CB.... the problem is the Giants have at least 4 or 5 real needs and only 3 picks on days 1 and 2, and round 4 is watered down because of comp picks... Of course you need 2 to tango but I would not be surprised if JS looks hard for options. Thoughts ?
if they are dining with Jaxon Smith-Njigba

I'd think they are seriously looking at a trade up
What?!?!?
Wildcardgiants : 3/22/2023 4:10 pm : link
No blue chip players at 25?

Matt Burk: Round 6
Mike Webster: Round 5

And there's 100 more.
At 25
Spiciest Memelord : 3/22/2023 4:10 pm : link
you're not likely getting a red-chip let alone blue chip player.
Rest of the league probably feels the same way
AcesUp : 3/22/2023 4:10 pm : link
So it doesn't seem likely that the 25th pick will be attractive for other teams looking to move up. If it is for whatever reason, then yes the Giants should seriously entertain trade down offers.

I would doubt Schoen is equally as confused. He has his priorities and is working through his plan for the 2023 Giants. And I'm pretty sure either a good WR or a good CB will be there at 25 so there will be talent to draft. Anything could happen but trading down would be very low on my list.
I think they are looking for impact players.
Pepe LePugh : 3/22/2023 4:16 pm : link
and will be ready to move up if certain players slip to 20-ish. Barring that, I think there is another tier of value fits at 25. If that tier is exhausted as well, they will trade down rather than reach.

if JSN falls to 18 or so, NYG will be on the phone
there is no way to predict if we can trade up or down
edavisiii : 3/22/2023 4:17 pm : link
Every year something we never could predict happens. Someone could fall to 25 that the Giants aren't interested in, Yet someone really wants but we won't know until the night of the draft.
let me guess

it's a 24 player draft...

funny how some always think that
Amateur draft nut here
gameday555 : 3/22/2023 4:30 pm : link
So take this FWIW. I've never seen a class with worse looking talent outside of the projected first 60 players. Unless you're able to turn picks into substantial assets in next year's class, I'm not too keen on moving back this year. Stay put and try to take one of the few decent players in the class.
I would agree this is not a great draft
Chip : 3/22/2023 4:52 pm : link
The WR Addison and JsN have run 4.5. None of the QBs are Andrew Luck or Justin Herbert in talent. You can get dragged into the NFL network propaganda machine and think everyone is great but it is not the case this year. There are good players just not great ones. Carter and Anderson are the best 2. It is not a 24 player draft for blue chip it is probably 2. The hype around the Florida QB who lead his team to a losing record and a loss to Vanderbilt is a great athlete but not a great football player but he could develop into one but I doubt it. I have studied drafts since before Lt and Phil Simms.

. I don’t think it is that dire, but directionally agree.

This. Be ready for a trade up imo.
I
AcidTest : 3/22/2023 5:10 pm : link
don't want to trade up for anyone, although I agree that is more likely than trading down. Pick #25 is worth 720 points. Thirty-one is worth 600. The difference is basically the third round pick we traded to Las Vegas for Waller, unless you want to trade out of the first round, which would be a mistake IMO. We also have a lot of day three picks.

I don't think taking JSN out to dinner means we'd trade up for him. The Giants will take a lot of players out to dinner.
A trading partner probably would only be interested in trading up
Ivan15 : 3/22/2023 5:34 pm : link
For a player at a premium position and to gain the 5th years option. Maybe a player in free fall. Do you think the Giants would walk away from one of those players?
I would think unless
joeinpa : 3/22/2023 5:46 pm : link
There is someone left on the board, that a team picking after the Giants really wanted, there would be very little incentive to give up a pick to move up.

Do you think picks 25 to 32 are viewed significantly different to warrant such a move for a team?

I m thinking it s unlikely.

Well done
No good/great receivers at or around 25?
bigblue5611 : 3/22/2023 5:52 pm : link
Justin Jefferson (22nd overall), Davante Adams (53rd overall), Tyreek Hill (165th overall), Cooper Kupp (69th overall) and Amon-Ra St. Brown (112th overall) are just some of the names that would like to say hello here…
Also

Diggs at 164th overall, but you get the idea…I hope…
These conversations are fun but problematic, because
81_Great_Dane : 3/22/2023 6:06 pm : link
hardly any of us actually puts together a draft board. Sy and Colin do, or at least they do grades and rankings.

If we haven't got a board, none of us can really make the case for anything. Some guys always go earlier than expected, because that team's board is different. Somebody always drops, too. We can say "The best WRs will be gone" but who are the "best" WRs? How do the prospects compare to each other? No two teams define these things the same way.

I kind of compulsively do Giants mock drafts on PFN. The same names tend to go in roughly the same parts of the draft, because there's only one board: The PFN board. (Which they didn't even follow when they did their own mock draft.) When the teams draft, there are 32 different boards, 32 sets of grades and rankings, 32 organizations thinking about system fit.

You're a child. Back to the kids table.
I think all options
pjcas18 : 3/22/2023 6:26 pm : link
should be on the table, having flexibility I believe allows for the most optimal draft.

No one who knows what they're doing drafts purely for need and no one who knows what they're doing drafts BPA in a vacuum.

Same with trades (up or down).

The reason against trading down (in general) unless you can pick up a 1st for the next draft is the evidence shows that historically the later in the draft the less likely the chance of hitting on the draft pick.

this is irrefutable, but many fans ignore it and will say things like "yes, 2 more comp picks a 5th and a 6th - we have so many holes we need those 2 extra picks" - this is an ignorant comment mostly because the chances either of those two picks contributing in a meaningful way is remote.

Not to say you will never get a contribution from them, it's just unlikely but the way some fans talk about them with their "draft capital" lingo and pick hugging nature you would think next years starters are coming from those picks.

Anyway, trade up, trade down, stay put and drafting almost any position - all should be on the table and when the Giants see how the draft unfolds they should make their move accordingly.

Except absolutely no one has said that this year.
Trade up
bronxct1 : 3/23/2023 10:13 am : link
This is not an ideal pick to trade back from and I'm not sure how many teams would be interested in trading into it.

I think this is a good year to trade up and grab a WR or CB you really like. I don't think they 100% need to do it but I think it's a good year to be aggressive to secure an impact player.
Whenever we pick I still feel OL is the most important

Take a center and then let the good times roll.
We will have a lot more firepower this season no matter what
