If they draft a guy, they’ll have quite a bit of competition to sort out the roster spots. Assuming they’ll carry 6 at most - maybe 7 if they view some of them as key STers (Crowder, Smith)
BBI would be upset the giants sogned a veteran wr at a presumably minimum deal. These are the type of guys you want around. Shep and even wandale are no guarantee foe this year.
Jones and Crowder were not on the roster at the same time. Jones was a fresman the year after Crowder was drafted by the Redskins.

I'd say he's a training camp body with a chance to compete for return duties.
have a lot of bodies at WR, but right now really only Slayton, Campbell, and Hodgins are certainties to make the roster, assuming they stay healthy. Everyone else is either injured or a journeyman. We have plenty of room for Smith and Crowder and whoever we draft.
Every team signs guys to vet minimum contracts. But let's not act this team was cheap this offseason when they added two guys who make 10 million or more and signed others in the 4-6 per range.
That looks terrific, and then another injury comes along. That being said, it’s clear that Schoen is looking to create some competition amongst the receiver group. If they draft another one they’ll be up to 14 guys. I would say 12 of those players would have made last years roster.
Interesting, this move makes even more sense then. And like you said people need to prepare for no WR in rounds 1-2. Anything could happen but they might go D and OL.
that both Shep and WDR play by the end of October at the very latest.
They might play, but there's a good chance Shep will get hurt again and be done sometime in Nov. Not trying to be mean, but we can't count on him based on recent history.
And who knows how effective WDR will be in his 1st season coming back from an ACL.
Instead of just going out and getting a WR1, the Giants are signing four .25 WRs. Because as we know, 1/4 x 4 = 1. So now we have our WR1 in Campbell, Slayton, Shep, Crowder.
it's kind of feeling like they entered this offseason thinking
James is a borderline NFL roster player, and the fumbles are killers.
a few years ago yes, now not so sure. if james would have signed for minimum i think they'd have taken him over crowder. the fumbles werent good obviously but if have someone else returning the ball his hands catching were extremely reliable and he made a lot of tough catches.
“#Giants are signing WR Jamison Crowder to 1-year VSB (veteran salary benefit) deal, source confirms. Focused on building out positions with value deals to create competition + provide options if bad things happen.
Does not change draft board or what WR looks like moving forward.”

The Giants are signing WR Jamison Crowder, per @JosinaAnderson
. Another versatile receiver. Strength by #s. NYG don’t want to get stuck like last year.
Crowder also has pre-existing relationship w/fellow Dukie Daniel Jones. Didn’t play together but have worked out together.

Alright, can't be too upset at that. I mean I think Crowder is redundant but sounds like a vet. min. and I think he has a better chance of making the roster than Shepard or Jeff Smith.
I have to give Shoen/Brown/Daboll a ton of credit!
James muffed two punts against Seattle costing Giants the game, and muffed another punt against Chicago. James also muffed two punts in 2020 when playing for the Niners. Giants may think Jamison Crowder is more surehanded. Crowder muffed only two punts in three years.

obviously not, but at the minimum i think they'd have chosen him over crowder. i think james is likely holding out for more than a vsb and i think he may still get it.
On this site still think David sills is a quality NFL receiver and they get mad at signing a guy like Crowder. It’s hilarious. The Giants fan base is brutally ignorant.
This roster is being built over a few years. Schoen could definitely try and swing a deal for a WR1. But that would make it hard to fill some of the othe holes this team has. There may come a time that it makes sense to swing a deal for a big time playmaker but it's not this offseason.
Crowder should provide solid depth. Can't count on WanDale and Shep. Can't have another season scouring the waiver wire and practice squads in week 7-10 either.
This most blah group of receivers I have ever seen

I am not sure what Slayton did to Dabs to be in the doghouse for so long but he stepped up and kept his mouth shut. Kudis to him. Schoen looking for more miracle comebacks with his moneyball scheme with Jameson Crowder. Maybe another gallon in the gas tank?

I mean I know he is just a body but he isn’t good at this point in career
Shepard is always hurt
Robinson looked solid but coming off a major injury
Campbell is whatever
Slayton is at best a 3
Hodgins is whatever, maybe a solid 2 or 3
Smith prob doesn’t even make roster
We got absolutely fucked last year because our very below average starters either got hurt or weren't producing. Now we've got some NFL talent on the roster no matter what happens with injuries.

I don't think anyone is saying that the WR position is good. It is definitely better than last years group though. Campbell is more than "whatever". If he can stay healthy he will be an excellent #2 WR for the Giants this season. This team desperately needs a true #1 WR which I hope they land in the draft.
Robinson's injury was a clean ACL tear. Not saying that isn't bad, but it's not like the guy ruptured his entire knee and leg. He'll come back from it.

I don’t think Campbell is a #2 at all. 3 at best.
Upgrading over last year wasn’t difficult.
This years group may be better but it’s nowhere near most winning teams in the nfl.
I too am hoping we can land a #1 on draft but who knows if that will happen
BleedBlue, the WR corps is still not that good, but the Giants were 1 win away from the NFC Championship game with a way worse group last season.
They've improved on that group, with draft picks likely coming. I don't think anyone is expecting the Giants to have a top 10 or top 15 unit. But last year they were basically dead last.

I agree… I just don’t see offense taking next step without a legit #1. Maybe Waller fills that role but I’m not overly confident in that.
To say don't forget Sills, then when they bring in a really good player who has been productive for years, playing with lousy offenses with lousy QB's and they criticize, then they don't want to hear the truth. Fucking David Sills. Played because we lost everyone, and sucked. Thank God Schoen don't think like many here.

Anyone on this site be upset with this signing? The WRs were bottom barrel last year, and we bring in a guy with real production throughout his career. He is/was signed as protection against Wandale and Sheps injury’s, and adds another vet to the room. Sheesh.
The quantity (and even the quality to some extent) leads me to believe that the Giants don't expect WR to be BPA when they are selecting early in the draft. Like they're looking at their current draft board and not seeing many matches with a WR at a point where they expect to be picking in the early rounds.

My expectations for both Shep and WanDale are small…both coming back from serious injuries. WanDale is probably on 8 week IR or PuP, whatever it is called, at start of the season.
On this site still think David sills is a quality NFL receiver and they get mad at signing a guy like Crowder. It’s hilarious. The Giants fan base is brutally ignorant.
You might have misunderstood the initial reference to David Sills. Literally nobody ever wants to see him on the field again.

Last year we collected mostly practice squad players and chronically unsigned guys. This year we seem to be collecting experienced NFL vets instead. As long as they are affordable with no financial risk, sure thing, bring as many in as we can and let camp sort it out!

No i wasn’t referring to your comment. In season, there was actually a large contingent of fans on this site who still thought sills should be seeing regular snaps.
Nobody is exciting, a few still have a ceiling, but we have more overall talent now than we did at any point last year. I assume all this means we are targeting a WR in round 1, as we still need a true WR1. We have a number of guys who can be slated as a WR2 or WR3 and/or slot. For example, I am not as down on Slayton as a #2, as he was for the second half of his rookie year. But, him as a forced WR1 just isn't a recipe for success. I honestly believe with a WR1, our offense next year will be very productive.

Who else is out there to sign?
Wan'Dale probably starts year on PUP , so it makes sense
Not all of these guys are going to open the season on the active roster.
The Giants will resume offseason activities in a few weeks. They'll need a slot WR giving Jones a good look with the 1's.
Hopefully at least 1 gem stands out.
While I haven't watched Jameson play the past couple of seasons, on the surface I like him over James as a receiver.
What’s interesting though is that the team really seems to have no issue with small WRs.
Crowder is assured nothing. I'm sure he can be cut with no cap hit.
Good move.

im not sure how much he has left since a bunch of guys played over him in buffalo last year but depth is depth.
