prospects similar to last year's picks - tank dell

Eric on Li : 3/23/2023 1:00 pm
with just 1 draft from this regime there's not a ton of sample size to make connections but just like emmanuel forbes/cordale flott have some similarities, so to do tank dell and wan'dale. statistically they had really comparable seasons in comparable tier 2 p5 schools where they carried the majority of their team's offense.

wandale uk 2021 - 104 rec, 140 targets, 1334 yards, 7 tds, 7 drops, 70% slot
tank hou 2022 - 108 rec, 150 targets, 1399 yards, 17 tds, 9 drops, 67% slot, 1 return td
(his 17 tds amd 1399 yards led all cfb)

both win with elite acceleration, each having been close to the top of cfb in forcing missed tackles and being close to the top of the combine with their 1.49 10 yard splits, and those are attributes we saw translate in last year's nyg offense pre-injury.

both are bottom of the charts in terms of size/weight, though tank has longer arms so his build is less oompa loompa and more tyler lockett/desean jackson (he weighed in at 169 and his arms were 29 3/4).

it's possible dell/wandale are so comparable to be duplicative but it's probably equally possible the team values the same things they valued with wandale (who looked on his way to being a good pick pre-injury). also as always no 2 players are exactly alike. i've seen a good amount of tank and while i didnt see a lot of wandale at uk, i think tank is a more polished all areas wr and versatile route runner than how the nyg used wandale (which was kind of like a more explosive cole beasley). tank also showed explosive punt return ability in the rare occasion they let him do it at houston, so that's an area where he could make an impact day 1.

tank's consensus rank right now is higher than where wandale was last year so i doubt we see tank aggressively targeted in the same way they selected wandale higher than his consensus rank, but if available in the 2nd he may represent the best value available because the few players in the draft who can match his big play production will be long gone and this team still needs more of that however they can get it. with waller, hodgins, and bellinger the nyg arent lacking for receiving targets with size, and especially with wan'dale coming off an acl and campbell having the injury history he's had, i think there's room for another explosive big play guy out of the slot - as the nyg seem to also be considering w/ their dinners with jsn and flowers. if they dont end up with a wr in round 1 i think dell would be a real good add in round 2.

Dell’s 10 and 20 split is so odd that I’m inclined to doubt the measurement. One of those two numbers has to be wrong.

If I was a scout, I’d ask Dell to run it again.

i forgot to mention today is houston's pro day so we may see that happen. the flying 20 does suggest he throttled down for some reason at combine.

Seems to be a quick burst guy rather than a strider.
He ran the second half of the 40

Faster than the first half yet his 10 yard split is exceptional. Bad data.

the flying 20 is always faster because it's peak velocity after build up and it tends to favor long striders. this year the fastest flying 20 was bryce ford wheaton at 1.80.

wandale's flying 20 was 1.9 which was actually just barely worse thank tank's 1.89. so despite the same 10 yard split, in the next 10 yards tank was .06 slower than wandale, but then the same speed in their final 20, so contrary to my comment about throttling down im not thinking maybe dell took a bad line or something in that 10-20 range.
I am not familiar with Dell. Is he a sometimes RB too?

I think that’s what Schoen liked about Wan’dale.

in 2021 wandale had just 7 rushing attempts. Dell had 4 last year.

both had/have gadget labels because of their size, but both were basically the most productive WRs in CFB each of the last 2 seasons.

only 4 players had over 100 receptions this year (dell was 2nd with 109).

only 5 had over 100 receptions last year, (wandale was 2nd with 104).

also notable however is that josh downs and jordan addison each had 100 last year (and jsn had 95). downs added another 94 this year. i could see any of those guys on the table if they get to nyg pick/s.

I could not imagine a 165lb WR playing in the NFL. That’s even smaller than Robinson. This kid should be setting records in the agility drills. He’s really small.

It’s funny he didn’t bench…
