I have to assume this AHC job involves Judge breaking down film alone in his office during the week and sitting in the coaches booth during games...
I have to hand it to Belichick, he's nothing if not loyal. He knew that returning Judge back to special teams coordinator would all but end his chances to be anything more than that in the NFL, so he gives him the fancy title.
So, the report that Belichick had lost confidence in him
This is a saving face demotion. They moved him back to special teams because he was a disaster on the offensive side of the ball. It wasn't just him clashing with players like Mac Jones but Joe Judge also reportedly got into several arguments with the other position coaches when he would try to take over meetings.
I wondered last year if the Pats gave him that nondescript job title because they could pay him very little as the Giants were on the hook to pay his salary. So basically they got Judge at an assistant coach job but saved money because they could barely pay him with whatever made up title he got.
There are few rules around this stuff, but I have always figured that when a coach gets hired as an assistant after he's been fired somewhere else, it's a gentleman's agreement among the owners to give them a market rate deal as an assistant coach & the former team covers the remainder. It felt like the Pats skirted past that last year and maybe Mara went over to Kraft and told him to knock that crap off.

One difference b/w Patricia in '21 and Judge in '23, just to illustrate it—Patricia's name was on player contracts back then, and this year, Matt Groh's name is in that spot. Judge's job will be more in coaching special teams, being a liaison between coaching and scouting, etc.
RE: RE: So, the report that Belichick had lost confidence in him
Sounds like they are "promoting" Judge away from the offense.
Belichick doesn't strike me as the type to give out those sorts or promotions. He also does not worry much about players opinions. Logical explanation is he has a lot of confidence in Judge.

...and Judge in particular. I mean, he snowed everybody, fans included.
What happened? I know dribs and drabs about from reports, and could see with my own eyes that he was a confused gameday coach, but there has to be more than that.
Did players hate him? If so, why? Is he a dummy that was simply mentally overmatched on game day? Did he not prepare well? Did practices not prepare the team for what they would be seeing? Did he overrule coaches?
I'd love to know, because I have never seen a turnaround from his opening press conference to the timid, confused, ill-prepared and unhinged guy that ended the 2021 season.

From what I can tell, it was probably everything you listed and maybe a few more.
He was like that guy who bullshits and brags his way into a job position and then figures out quick, as does his coworkers, that he has no idea what he's doing
What happens if Bill can't go? Like if he has a health issue, or screams too much and gets a suspension? Is Judge then in charge? He's their backup plan?
If you don't hold coaches to the same performance standards as the players. I'm sure Pats players wish they could screw up all over the place and get a better title out of it.

If Judge could have a mulligan, he takes the Mississippi State gig over us. I don't think he'll ever sniff a chance to be a head coach again in the pros & perhaps college too. He was-and the Giants @ large-were a national joke after the 2021 season.

I can't see any team hiring him as a head coach because the entire league saw plain as day how incompetent he was. I suppose anything is possible if he sticks around long enough and learns from his mistakes but he might be a lost cause

True almost anywhere where relationships come first.

Nice call on that.
Bill just probably has him running around picking up his laundry from the cleaners.

"Here you go boss! Your coffee with milk and sugar just how you like it!"
He should get into politics. He'll get moved up the chain right quick lol

He's too dogmatic. I recognize the type.

So how does THIS thread get political? geez louise.

thing about being Belichick clone - better win fast and keep winning because that style has a short shelf life when you're struggling.
Non Patriots fans in New England have waited 20- 30 years for their decline/ collapse .
JJ will guarantee it.

Or maybe Judge's time with NYG will be like Bill's time in Cleveland? Makes you wonder what Bill sees that everyone else on the planet is missing.
