Why all of this talk about the Giants not being “one player away” ?
I look through the NFC and see a WIDE open race with every team having serious holes of depth and questions unanswered at key positions. The 49ers, Cowboys, and Eagles seem to be the strongest, but have considerable concerns
49ers - QB? Purdy won’t be ready and even if he is? There’s no guarantee he’s the goods. Same for Trey Lance. Sam Darnold? Lol. Losing their RT and Safety as well
Eagles - add another year to an already aging roster. Losing several starters in the middle of their defense and quality depth on their DL. Let’s not forget another year of tape on Hurts. Can he do it again? Consistently? They are worse than last year IMO
Cowboys - they seemed to add several quality pieces this off-season. Admittedly I think they are probably the most well rounded team on paper with depth included. The pieces they added are aging vets on the downside of their career though. Interesting to see them put it all together with McCarthy now calling the plays. Dak still hasn’t shown he can be elite.
Lions,Seattle,Saints are quality teams but in no better position then we are in the talent department.
The Giants certainly have depth issues, along with questions at several starting positions, but I believe the core of young players at key positions, makes us a very dangerous team heading into next year. The progress from Neal and Thibs, with a healthier Ojulari and Waller, can not be dismissed. Adding Barkley,Dex,Mckinney, Jackson, Thomas, and the hopeful continued improvement of Jones, only adds to the excitement.
This is an ascending team with several young talented players, especially at key positions. A few lucky breaks, and continued progress, and we very well may be 1 player away from serious contention in a seemingly watered down NFC.
There are always injuries, bad calls and unlucky bounces but it’ll be nice to go into the season thinking we at least have a chance to compete.
Great point. That is a significant point I did not think to include.
Yes it’s the NFL and all teams deal with injuries, but again in 2022 it disproportionately affected the Giants. Down the stretch the ranked as one of the two teams in NFL most impacted by injuries. Philly was on the polar opposite end of the spectrum.
beat Eagles and/or Dallas and I will agree..
they have our number so bad.
Basically you listed some of our better players in your post.
beyond that..wins and losses?..division wise.

That’s the exciting part. Projecting the growth of those young players. We have 2 all pro players in the trenches split between both lines. Not many teams have those long of building blocks in place. I agree we have to show it on the field, but this is the first year in a decade where I have felt positive about the team and it’s direction. I get annoyed when the “one player away” group comes out, when discussing potential moves. We might not be one player away, but at the minimum we are close.
They were a playoff team last year with key starters missing several games and a number of young guys playing meaningful snaps. They've added some key pieces and only notable losses are Love and Feliciano - though both of those are replaceable players.
Talent wise, they've gotten deeper - adding NFL quality players to groups that were very weak and thin last year (receiver, TE, DL, LB, DB)
Guess why they have gotten high marks? It's the two trades that brought Gilmore and Cooks to the team. The moves you don't think much of.
Gilmore and Cooks strengthens the CB and WR position groups. Dallas now doesn't need to reach for these positions in the draft. It let's them choose the BPA.

Pretty sure I mentioned Dallas as adding quality pieces ? No?
Both are definitely on the downswing on their respective careers tho. How much do they have left?

Dallas has gotten high marks so far in free agency by many.

Gilmore has a one year deal and Cooks has a two year deal, but Dallas can cut him after the 2023 season.
These players were not acquired for the long term. They both are bridge players till Dallas can draft their replacement.
WR Jalen Tolbert was drafted last year to be the 3rd WR, but that didn't happen. If Tolbert flashes this year Cooks may not be returning in 2024. If not Dallas will draft another WR.
Dallas will address the CB position in this draft and probably the next. Gilmore's time in Dallas will probably also be short lived.

This is my sentiment as well. I don't subscribe to "the Eagles blew us out so we're not close" theory. The Packers blew us out in week 3 2007 and we then beat them on their own field in the playoffs in the same year.
But yes, we have to prove it. Speculation rules the internet and 24/7 sports talk TV and radio and that's fine. IT makes the off-season fun. I'm ready to see our G-Men blow up this division in 2023.
I have questions about their OL particularly at the LT position with Tyron Smith, who is long in the tooth.
But I look at that defense and I think they are really good. Having Gilmore to tandem with Trevon Diggs, having Parsons, Lawrence, Vander Esch, if they can keep that defense healthy they are going to be really tough.
Detroit is on the rise. They’d be my pick to win the NFCN, though Chicago could be a surprise contender if Fields take the next step as a passer.
