Jon Feliciano contract from 49ers was pretty cheap

Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/24/2023 8:23 am
1-year deal.

OTC says total value is $2,250,000.

Spotrac says total value is $2,335,000.

Regardless, when compared to what Nick Gates got (3-years, $16,500,000), pretty cheap deal.
Even more evidence the Giants didn't want him back IMO

know what Schoen and Daboll thought of his play, doesn't it. That would have been cheap insurance at center and guard.
Just curious
robbieballs2003 : 3/24/2023 8:26 am : link
But is it known if SF wants him as a C or G? I'm assuming C but I am just curious if it is definitive since he was basically a G his whole career outside of last year.
If the Giants didn't like him that much
robbieballs2003 : 3/24/2023 8:26 am : link
I wish they let Gates play C last year.
A pretty clear indication
j_rud : 3/24/2023 8:29 am : link
that they aren't worried about replacing him via either Bredeson or the draft. Kind if feels like a calculated risk but I don't think many here wanted him back either.
I know not too long ago Schoen implied they liked
Blue21 : 3/24/2023 8:31 am : link
Him for his leadership. Ironically didn't say much about his abilities even led to believe he could be backup but liked his leadership. Guess he changed his mind. That's apparently more than vet min and they probably felt strongly they weren't gonna offer more than that. And who knows maybe JF wanted to move on. Takes 2 sides to sign the contract.

I don’t think they thought he was ready for that kind of workload just coming back from that injury

I thought I read somewhere that he would play G for them. Can't remember where but on BBI somewhere.

Definitely a possibility especially in a new system.
So our starter is worth
Pepe LePugh : 3/24/2023 8:46 am : link
$2.25M per, and his backup is worth $5.5 APY?
Signed by the 49ers
Samiam : 3/24/2023 8:48 am : link
They have a pretty good OL and a pretty good eye for talent. The GM is good. If Feliciano was going elsewhere, with no centers with experience on the roster, it would have made me feel better if it were a team that doesn't know what its doing.
Not Going
JaxGiant : 3/24/2023 8:56 am : link
to miss ole Flex Feliciano. Dumbass.

Perhaps they liked Gated even less?

re-signed their C too. It seems like JF will play G.

Feliciano and Gates were not good at all last year. People complained incessantly about the interior OL and Feliciano and Gates were part of that problem, glaringly so in some of our losses.

Giants made ZERO intention/effort to bring either of them back, even as backups.

Why? The Giants made the playoffs last year and were trying to win games. Feliciano played better than Gates. He started. Bobby Johnson knows way more than any of us.

It’s pretty simple.
the
Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/24/2023 9:18 am : link
issue of who was better last year is a bit moot. Gates came back late due to the serious injury. At that point, do you start swapping out OLs during the middle of a playoff push?
Neither guy was the answer
UberAlias : 3/24/2023 9:25 am : link
So we move on. They have guys on the roster who they believe can do the job as good or better and they'll also draft someone (not @25).
In addition to flexibility, Gates brings heart and toughness, traits
Spider56 : 3/24/2023 9:27 am : link
which Rivera has always valued. I would have liked to see him stay in blue when he returns to full strength but also think the Redskins overpaid.

That they didn’t is even more revealing about what they thought of Gates as their center.
What Washington paid Gates looks like an overpay.
cosmicj : 3/24/2023 9:28 am : link
I think that will be looked back on as a bad contract, although obviously not some sort of huge mistake.
The thing that's bothering me
Johnny5 : 3/24/2023 9:32 am : link
Is that more than a couple of people mentioned that Bredeson looked like the best center we had last year. It seems the staff agreed as it kinda looks like Bredeson is the guy this year. I question it a bit because if that's actually the case, then why the hell did they stick with Feliciano at Center all year? It doesn't make any sense. I wonder if they have another plan. And what's Plan B and C. We can sign all the WRs we want, Megatron in his prime but nothing is going to look much better without a decent center and better OL play. Especially against the Cowboys and Eagles.

Bobby Johnson too. Remember he was his position coach both at BUF and NYG.
....
CoughlinHandsonHips : 3/24/2023 9:41 am : link
eek - wouldn't of minded him back at that contract to hedge our bets.

But its a two way street - maybe Feliciano didn't want to come back.

And... Gates me be one of the most over hyped player on this board. Our interior oline was a disaster - and he was still rotated in and out.
Obviously
PaulN : 3/24/2023 9:47 am : link
They didn't think much of him.
Lemieux probably one of the most overhyped players on this board and
Rick in Dallas : 3/24/2023 9:47 am : link
Gates was very close to him.
Trusting Schoen so far.
I still think IOL is going to be high priority in the coming draft.
I also don't think Giants hand Neal the right tackle job
kelly : 3/24/2023 9:53 am : link
I believe they plan on having competition at that spot. Not sure if it will be someone on the roster or a draft pick.

Maybe they are looking at the draft for someone who could play tackle or guard.

Giants know they still have to fix the o line.

Good luck to him.

100%.
Feliciano was actually pretty decent in motion,
MOOPS : 3/24/2023 11:05 am : link
when he was pulling. It was when he was pass blocking, setting up a decent pocket, where he had major problems.
I read somewhere
Des51 : 3/24/2023 11:16 am : link
that it wasn't about money, Feliciano wanted to get back to the Bay area.

My thoughts exactly
Giants fall in love
UberAlias : 3/24/2023 11:26 am : link
with their own players. So I've read.
Feliciano was signed as a stop gap last year
Dave on the UWS : 3/24/2023 12:05 pm : link
and played like it.
They had the intent of cutting Gates before the season started, but relented.
Neither would be anything more than depth this year. They will upgrade this off season

I would assume G only because he was a decent G and a terrible C.
$2M+ would be life changing for most people
US1 Giants : 3/24/2023 12:18 pm : link
but not for an NFL player.
The guy was awful in pass protection
Vanzetti : 3/24/2023 3:31 pm : link
He was mobile and did a good job in getting out in front of screens.

But he was pushed back at the point of attack and was not very apt at picking up stunts, which is absolutely crucial for a center.

Me too.
I'd like to see a Center by Round 4 if we don't add an OL through FA.
I wouldn't have minded him back
Cenotaph : 3/25/2023 8:06 pm : link
as insurance at the price; but I think it's indicative that we're clearly looking to improve at C (likely thru the draft).

The $ Gates got seems to be more based on what we thought he could be and less on what he mostly actually delivered.
