Julian Love contract details with the Seahawks, per source: 2 years, $12M with $5.98M guaranteed, including a $4.82M signing bonus.
2023 cap hit: $3.9M
2024 cap hit: $8.1M
slayton has the slightly higher cap # this year and more incentives
values him much. I'm sure he likes him as a guy, but Wink's D is all about speed and playmaking ability.
Love's a small, slow SS. He dropped alot of INTs last year too, on tipped balls over the middle. Gotta produce turnovers as a S or you're expendable.
they reportedly offered him a bigger contract in season and maybe as recently as like 10 days ago. i dont think they did that because they didnt like him.
Exposed some of Love's weaknesses as well I think. He's not a lead dog at safety.
and he didn't get paid like one. by aav he's currently #32 (so literally at the midline of starting safeties).
when mckinney was out he also showed that even though he's not a star with 3 other starters out the defense was able to keep the defense functional. i believe they played the 2 washington games without mckinney and jackson.
the ancillary benefit of them showing that they are willing to walk isn't nothing but he was a productive player they liked even though he wasn't a star.
Good for them. Lot's of weird takes on this thread, IMO. Love is a solid tackler and often is in excellent position (of course except for those Eagles games).

Is he a $10 million/year player? No way, and I am glad the Giants didn't sign him for that. But his he a sub-$4 million cap hit player? Of course he is. IMO he is worth the $8 million cap hit in 2024 as well.
I know it's not as simple as choosing one or the other
But signing Slayton over Love is somewhat baffling for roughly the same dollar amount.
I have to imagine that Jones played a hand in Slayton's return just from a comfort level. I am not going to rely on Robinson and Shepard this year as we all see that ACLs mostly take 2 seasons to fully recover (Adrian Peterson is the exception). But you are going into this year with Hodgins, Campell, and Slayton as your top 3 WR? Woof.
And now at Saftey it's McKinney/Belton/McCain?
We seem to be awfully think at WR and S at least now.
I think you have to really separate Slayton and Love, and just accept the coincidence.
To believe the scenario was Slayton or Love, you have to believe the 2.74M dollar difference between McCain's cap hit and Love's cap hit was a camel breaking straw for Schoen.
Put another way, Schoen could have easily come up with 2.74M this year if he viewed Love as a core guy. Seems to me the org feels they can produce the YoY growth they did with Love, with Belton.

I am looking at it more from a positional strength perspective. Even with the Slayton signing, the WR group looks worse on paper than last year.
With the Love departure, our safeties look worse on paper this year. You sign Love and don't sign Slayton, the WR group still looks worse on paper, but the safeties stay the same.
It's obvious that Wink/Schoen/Daboll think that Belton or McCain can fill the void and then some. With Jefferson converting to LB, Wink likes felxibility so it's going to be interesting how he uses these multiple guys
I think this answers your question. 4.54 40, mediocre RAS scores, under 200 pounds. He got moved to safety because he wasn't going to make it as a corner.
Love overplayed his hand.

Slayton's contract also has an out after the first year with little dead cap hit.
And NFL is a copy-cat league: expect a lot more teams to adopt the Eagles Bum Rush offense.
Signing Love for that amount would have been a perfect example of "loving your own players too much."
That Pinnock signing is looking like a real smart move.
