US1 Giants : 3/24/2023 3:25 pm
Eagles’ controversial push sneak play unchallenged by NFL competition committee.

So it is still legal for 2023.

This is so dumb to me. This isn't some crazy play that needs to be practiced all training camp to be run properly. It could have been put in during any week.
I hope it doesn't take them...

2 years to implement a play with guys pushing the QB on a sneak...
It changes the QB position
Vanzetti : 3/24/2023 3:35 pm : link
Hurts is basically a mediocre pocket passer but has evolved into a huge weapon because any time it is 3rd and less than two to go, it is basically an automatic first down. They have shortened the downs from 10 yards to 8 yards.
So much

for the can’t assist a player over the GL rule.
everybody will add this play
GiantsFan84 : 3/24/2023 3:44 pm : link
of course the league won't challenge it, it increases scoring which is what the league wants

personally i hate it. it's more a rugby play than football and it takes the fun out of watching what was previously an intense short yardage plays. now it's more of a yawn i know they are going to get it
For most new trends, eventually DCs will come up with adjustments

teams will have a little person ball carrier in a full house backfield including 2 huge players who will throw him over the GL.

The play's success...
Brown_Hornet : 3/24/2023 3:59 pm : link
... is as much about low man wins and the wedge.
But the runner definitely gets a jolt.

it and it’s usage will drop dramatically. Hurts is on a cheap contract at the moment. If he gets hurt the Eagles don’t lose much financially.

with qb hemmed in by big bodies
TJ : 3/24/2023 4:15 pm : link
he's a sitting duck. Only a matter of time til LBs start launching themselves over the line and snap one of them in half. If the first down can't be stopped the D will look to make the O pay for it.

Then maybe teams start using designated sneak guys short enough to completely hide behind blockers.

We should all be so lucky to find someone who loves us as much as the NFL loves Thursday Night Football.
I don't like
darren in pdx : 3/24/2023 4:21 pm : link
that they ever changed that offensive players could push each other forward. I still players get pulled a lot and that never gets called even though that is still illegal.

The league will keep this until a QB inevitable gets their leg stepped on and seriously hurt.
Yep, someone's gonna get crunched
wigs in nyc : 3/24/2023 4:27 pm : link
and then they'll change it back. That's why they outlawed all of these:

I can't see how this is a smart play.
larryflower37 : 3/24/2023 4:30 pm : link
Why would you want 2 250 pound guys running into the back of your QB?
Someone is going to get seriously hurt.
the reason why the play is successful is that
Essex : 3/24/2023 4:31 pm : link
the offense knows the snap count, so when you have that advantage that push is all you need to get the half yard. The play is stupid, but every team can use it now and although Jalen Hurts is a particularly strong qb, I don't see his strength as something that is anything more than marginal in the reason why the play works. I do think though that when you have all 32 teams doing it and defenses trying imaginative ways to stop it, injuries will pile up.
Everything old is new again. Ever hear of the T Formation?
Marty in Albany : 3/24/2023 4:34 pm : link
Also called the full house backfield. 2 HBs and a FB line up behind the QB.

Whether it is first, second, third, or fourth down: QB hands off to one back and the other two trail him and push him through the line. The QB can sit back and relax.

That formation would also make for some wonderful play-action passing plays.
Just crank your $40M man

Sound strategy.
I don't care about the push
Ron Johnson : 3/24/2023 4:46 pm : link
they need to start flagging Kelce for pushing the ball forward a half a yard each time.

His strength is what protects him during the tumult.

Bingo!
The defense to this will be kill the quarterback
Ben in Tampa : 3/24/2023 5:51 pm : link
QBs do not have normal protections on this play because they are a runner.

It’s hard to defend, so the next option is make coaches think twice about risking their QB.

QB, why even use your QB. Let Evan Neal take the snap. Or SB if you are looking for low to the ground strength.

Either Newton’s 1st or 3rd law (take your pick) involves equal and opposite forces. Now that it’s every week, every game, DC’s. will go to work. Of course, that will lead to the fake push, followed by the fake defensive alignment, and 3rd down will be fun again. Only question is the over/under on weeks it takes for this to happen.
My buddies and I were talking about this during the SB
GiantBlue : 3/24/2023 6:11 pm : link
The way to stop it is to sign two huge defensive tackles with psycho attitudes to come in on these short yardage situations.

On the first attempt, they dive at the knees of Kelce and can opener him. If he heads out of the game on a stretcher....that play will be washed out really fast.

If one or both get suspended, that is fine because they are bottom of the bench.

Rinse and repeat.

Exactly. It removes the brilliant exciting defensive stop on 4th and 1 or 4th and 2. Some of the greatest plays in NFL history.

Amen to this. It's at a point where the entire league knows he does it, fans know he does it, so the officials know he does it. Why is he never flagged or the ball re-set at the very least?
You can do it 4 plays in a row...

All you need to do is jump off sides as soon as the offense lines up. This assumes you are at the one yard line. Keep going off sides. The NFL will see that after 50 offsides, the game has to change.
