Owner collusion in terms of Lamar Jackson?

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 3/24/2023 6:47 pm
I apologize if this has been brought up before, but The Athletic had an article yesterday on this topic that caught my eye. In short, the owners-all pissed off about the guaranteed contract Watson got-are conspiring not to pursue Jackson, thus the lack of interest in him after Baltimore slapped the non-exclusive franchise tag on him over 2 weeks ago. And for those who will cite his injury concerns or postseason record for teams shying away, the write makes a good point rebutting those lines of thought by saying that both Watson & Kyler Murray-neither who have had pristine health or playoff success-got their respective bags. Hell, the Ravens owner-whose name I'd completely butcher if I tried spelling it-came out after the Watson deal & said it set a bad precedent going forward.

The article got me thinking. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. A dark horse for me is Lamar ends up in Foxboro. It seems like a BB type move.

No collusion

Plain and simple he’s an idiot. Bad injury history, scheme specific and not worth the price he is asking. It’s not collision if you are turning down a contract that’s fair.
Winning
allstarjim : 3/24/2023 6:55 pm : link
Trumps all.

I think if teams felt they would win with him, they would sign him.

The only reason something isn't done yet is because he's overvaluing himself.

Lack of postseason success, a play-style that carries significant risk to injury, as has manifested itself already, he doesn't factor in that to his market value, but the market does.

He simply isn't going to get Mahomes money. If he was willing to take DJ money he'd probably be signed already.

The collusion stuff always makes me chuckle. These teams want to win above all, to the detriment of the other 31 teams.
I really don't see BB

giving up a ton for Lamar. If he was a FA maybe he might make some sort of play for that quitter.
The Ravens offered DJ money
Chip : 3/24/2023 7:00 pm : link
fully guaranteed for 3 years and he said no. He should hire an agent.
The owners are too competitive
upnyg : 3/24/2023 7:02 pm : link
to collude on a player of significance. The problem here is that Jackson is acting as his own agent. Probably takes the negotiations too personal. Had a couple of good offers earlier, he wanted more.

Priced himself out and is now tagged. The other teams will either offer the picks to trade or he stays with Baltimore.

Dont forget he didnt play at the end of the season when many felt he was holding out to protect himself.

He will be just fine making 45-$55m a year at some point.
Here’s the thing
bmgints : 3/24/2023 7:02 pm : link
About guaranteed contracts that doesn’t get talked about. the cap and player salaries as a whole are by the collective bargaining agreement tied to a certain percentage of league revenue. Meaning if contracts are guaranteed they would be shorter duration and lower value (like Kirk cousins) bc there is a certain amount of money to be split. Unless the decision becomes QB contracts are guaranteed but then the additional money comes from other position player contracts. This is why NFLPA hasn’t pushed for guaranteed contracts. Overall money paid to players won’t change.

This is why the Deshaun Watson contract made no sense from before the time it was signed. It makes Dave Gettleman negotiating with Kenny Golladay look like a masterful negotiator

Exactly. Listening to the talking heads or other media speak about this issue is so boring and repetitive. Its collusion. No its his injuries. Ita like listening to 5 year olds talking about economics. If they focused on the percentage of revenue split they might actually have a serious dialogue.

Basketball has a soft cap-(Bird Rights) that allows teams to routinely exceed the cap forever. Baseball has no cap but a luxury cap that is less restrictive. Hockey is the closest but revenues so much smaller.

It will take a nuclear bomb to get the media to focus on the arithmetic.

Good post

This. Just because the Browns gave out that contract means other owners will.

Notice we say owners and not GM. A move like this is an owner decision.

yeah and this guy SUCKED as a QB and was a backup when he started with his controversies.

He was playing on a team in one of the cities whose population would agree with the position he was taking and even they did not retain him. Why is everyone asking whether OTHER teams in the league were trying to keep CK from playing, but nobody is talking about the 49ers?

In that city he could have been a God but the truth was he could not even be a backup on that team. Then, they had a merry-go-round of QBs and did not bring him back. More recently, they lost all of their QBs to injury and never picked up the phone to call CK.

Regarding Jackson, I think the league believes he is over-rated as a QB and without his ability to run, he is limited. Not bad.. but limited. Look at how he lost the game vs us last year. He was responsible for two turnovers that lost the game.
Another thing about guaranteed contracts
BigBlueShock : 3/24/2023 7:29 pm : link
Owners have to put the entire amount of guaranteed money into escrow. So if Lamar gets $200M guaranteed, that money needs to be set aside. And it’s not just THAT contract, it’s all guaranteed money on the roster. It’s just not realistic that many owners can do that. They are rich, sure. But many of them aren’t rich to the point they can stash away a quarter billion dollars or more in money that is gone no matter what happens. It’s great that the union feels they can bitch about this guaranteed money thing when it’s someone else’s money they are whining about. I’m sure if Demarius Smith owned a team he’d be more than happy to do what he’s complaining about the owners not doing…

And I hate defend the owners. They are mostly scum. But I damn sure don’t blame them not not fully guaranteeing huge contracts. For many reasons

I think the league's quarterback panic hit its peak last year.

You see the cash and prizes doled out for Watson and Wilson, and it's just not worth it.

I think Jackson is a very good QB, and if it were me I'd give him lots of money for 3 years. But I wouldn't turn over 2 first round picks and a Watson contract.

I don't think the league thinks he's over rated per se. I think he is a singular talent who needs an offense build to him. His body bit his brain Lin is the key to that offense. And he's getting to break down. Clevland was moronic. And no one else wants to be that fucking dumb. Guaranteeing that much money on a guy who is starting break down is nuts

Any value Lamar has gets killed between having their teams salary hijacked, and the loss of cheap, quality talent.

Why not? It would actually lower contracts instead of having these ridiculous contracts that have no chance of being attained, they are just constructed that way to spread cap.

He wants a fully guaranteed contract for a shitload of money with an injury history and coming off his latest injury causing him to miss a playoff game. That's just for the Ravens to sign him straight up. Everyone else has to give up picks for the privilege of dealing with all that. He has been overvaluing himself for months.

The 2 #1’s is not the issue, it is the request for a fully guaranteed contract that you would need Baltimore to not match.

How can any owner sign off on that for a guy with his injury history, who as many playoff victories as Daniel Jones or Kirk Cousins, and did not play this year when his team was in the playoffs?
not. he's just not that good and to guarantee a deal for a guy

The owners just see the downside to these type of contracts especially considering what QB's are being paid.

Ravens are at a bit of a crossroads. They have not been to a championship game in ten years. Lots of things can change for the organization so why saddle yourself with a QB on this type of contract if they make significant changes.
Ravens gave him a fair offer

If he doesn't like it, play on the tag for 2 years and become a FA. It's that simple.

Lamar Jackson is 26 years old, already was named MVP in 2019 and, I think he's missed fewer games than Daniel Jones over the past 4 seasons?

He deserves a market setting contract. Instead, he has been getting offered contracts that would pay him less than Kyler Murray.

Literally, the day he was franchised, a bunch of owners came out and said they wouldn't sign him. Why would they do that? If they are really competitive with one another, they'd keep quiet or even say they want to sign him to drive his price up.
2019 was a long time ago in the NFL
ZogZerg : 3/25/2023 10:09 am : link
For the 3 seasons after Lamar's MVP season, we have the following:

Completion % => Lower all 3 years
Completions => Lower all 3 years
Passing Yards => Lower all 3 years
Passsing TDs => MUCH lower all 3 years - from 36 to 26, 16, 17
Interceptions => More INTs all 3 years
QB Rating => Significantly Lower all 3 years
Rushing => Lower all 3 years
Rushing TDs => Same in 2020, Lower in 21 and 22

Playoff Record = 1-3

That 2019 season is looking more like a Fluke.

He has help, although it isn’t technically any agent. And an agent can’t make a client sign a deal - if Jackson isn’t happy with Baltimore and wants to play elsewhere and get paid more in the process, why shouldn’t he test the waters?

If the tag was ever pulled he’d be a FA and the Jets would 100% give Jackson his price. A few other teams would too IMO.

Why would you make a statement like that with a question, when you can easily find out the answer via a quick internet search?

Short answer - you are wrong.

In the last four seasons, Jackson has missed 12 games, and Jones has missed 11.

However, Jones's total includes the season ending game in 2022 (healthy, but sat out a meaningless game), and three games in his rookie season, when he was healthy but Eli started. Jackson missed one game in 2019, but not due to health (sat out a meaningless game)

So to recap - Jackson has missed 11 games to do health, and Jones has missed only 7.

I’m tired of these takes. Your first point is fine but hating a player for wanting a better deal is ridiculous, especially when in your first point you exclusively call out it being a violent game.

So Lamar Jackson should take all the risks and also not try maximize his earning potential?
