Owner collusion in terms of Lamar Jackson?

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 3/24/2023 6:47 pm
I apologize if this has been brought up before, but The Athletic had an article yesterday on this topic that caught my eye. In short, the owners-all pissed off about the guaranteed contract Watson got-are conspiring not to pursue Jackson, thus the lack of interest in him after Baltimore slapped the non-exclusive franchise tag on him over 2 weeks ago. And for those who will cite his injury concerns or postseason record for teams shying away, the write makes a good point rebutting those lines of thought by saying that both Watson & Kyler Murray-neither who have had pristine health or playoff success-got their respective bags. Hell, the Ravens owner-whose name I'd completely butcher if I tried spelling it-came out after the Watson deal & said it set a bad precedent going forward.

The article got me thinking. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. A dark horse for me is Lamar ends up in Foxboro. It seems like a BB type move.

I think collusion is highly unlikely given the rewards for success in the NFL and scarcity of franchise QBs.

I think the Watson deal was dumb and is unlikely to be repeated - especially since neither Watson nor Jackson are one of the top three guys in the NFL that could warrant a deal like that. The market might be slowing a bit from the Murray/Watson deals, which I think are just ridiculous.

He has the right not to play next year..
I wouldn't be happy if he did that..
The other owners have every right not to make the mistake Cleveland did

He would be a complete MORON not to play next year. He will never make up the money he will lose.

You are all over the place. Both Lamar Jackson and the owners should do what’s best for them. But saying you are sick of Lamar is bizarre when you just said it’s a violent sport. He should want every penny he can get and I’m not exactly sure why football fans have a problem with that.

I have a problem with him demanding the amount of guaranteed money he is asking for..and I have even more problem with the pundits who side with him and don't quite understand how devastating a guaranteed deal gone wrong can be to a franchise.
He certainly should get as much as possible...perhaps he became victimized by see the DeShawn Watson deal and wanting a similar deal.
Baltimore made it clear they wouldn't put their franchise in that position
Lamarr has held that team hostage for 2 yrs and probably will never play another down for them
There are certain rules that have been collectively bargained and both side need to adhere by them
Again...the rules allow for him to either play under the franchise tag...or sit out
Not really sure why you think I am all over the place.
The Ravens have been trying to extend this guy for almost 2 yrs...despite him missing some time both years
I am not even going to get into his playoff record...
He is a top 5 guy and should never paid like it...but he needs to understand that the Watson deal was an aberration by an awful franchise
My guess is he never will understand that and will sit out...
Then he will wind up with a similar offer to the best offer that the Ravens offered him.

Haaaahahhaaa
They will wind up with the Aaron Rodgers headaches instead
I doubt it's collusion

I think it's just that teams are getting wary about signing guys to huge guaranteed money - especially with the injury history in Lamar's case. If he's sticking by his 100% guaranteed demands, he may have some trouble getting the contract he wants - and I doubt many teams want to give up draft picks on top of that.

The collusion allegations make news in these cases, but there's usually more to the story and other reasons why teams may shy away.
Is it true that guaranteed money

must be held in escrow? If so, that could also be a deterrent and why some contracts are now adding guaranteed into future years.

Yes the owner needs to put a quarter billion in escrow for the term of the Contract
Financial guys hate having money sitting around not making them more money

I didn't know that...from a Financing side, if true, it's just about as bad as having to pay the full contract up front. Is this really true - any guaranteed money on deals has to be held in escrow, and cannot be used for normal team expenses? You would think this would be limited to maybe only the next year of payments, etc - but i'm not an expert on NFL contracts.

If true it certainly sheds a different light on guarantees.
Don't think so: two reasons
dpinzow : 3/25/2023 7:22 pm : link
--Nobody wants to give up the two first round picks
--Everybody thinks the Ravens will match a Lamar offer unless the Ravens are going to tear it down and go into a rebuild
