is to fix the rules. There have been too many "tweaks" in the last 30 years (mostly to jump start offenses) that are confusing and hard to officiate.
Another thought would be to eliminate video replay. Make the officials actually make the calls, instead depending on challenge over-rules. Yes, it would suck to lose on a bad call or no call, but that's the human element of the sport.
Doing this would also speed up games, and bring back the natural flow of the game. That's been lost.
for crying out loud.. also heard a good suggestion by Paul Dottino years ago... look at hiring football players.. there are a ton of guys who played college ball who dont make the NFL. They could be recruited to become officials, they would have jobs and get graded on performance, but again you need full time officials

What do they do the rest of the week that’s going to make them better officials? Play Madden? The NFL did a pilot program with full time officials a few years ago and there was no benefit found.
People bitch about the full time officials in basketball, baseball & hockey at least as much as they do NFL officials.
Seemed to work well imo. That’s a nice start. But for a group that still relies on chains instead of using technology, I’m in the I have no faith till I see it group
too much bullshit for an official to think about on every play. Plus, they are not always looking at the play from the camera angle.
Just think about the rules governing whether a catch is a catch. You have guys in the booth reviewing replay for 3-5 minutes in slow motion trying to figure it out. How the hell is a ref supposed to process it real time?
Roughing the passer has also morphed into a serious problem.
We dont have a referee problem, we have a rules problem.
MLB, NBA, and NHL? Not sure what those leagues do. Why skimp on officials when the NFL makes so much money?
this has nothing to do with whether they are full time or part time. I think you also need to recognize how many games those other leagues play.
They pay the players millions for 17 games. Don't see why they can't get at least the head ref from each crew to be a full-time employee. The NFL makes more money than the other leagues.
The NFL has to start really reviewing the officials
No need for full-time guys. Just critically review their performance. There is no reason a clown like Jerome Boger could last that long.
The review can't be one of the refs old buddies. It has to be someone more independent.
If they suck, get rid of them, period. There are 16 crews, maybe demote the bottom 4 refs each year. Also, assign the playoff games to the top crews, so there is accountability to each other. None of this split crew BS.
The solution seems so simple to me. This is a billion dollar business and they can't hire a team of officials that do this full time? It seems so obvious that I have to be missing something.

Lol. Most players don’t even know the rules.
