Not sure if everyone can open the link. I have subscription to Newsday.

Interesting comment from Schoen- the Giants are negotiating for extension with Dexter Lawrence but have had no negotiations for re structure or extension with Leonard Williams.

Barkley would be foolish to sit out the season. A players value does not go up with age. A two or three year deal at 10-12 million per would set him up for several lifetimes and seems to the best that a running back can get these days.
Giants - ( New Window )
We have until July 17th (?)

to sign SB to a mutually agreeable contract. If not, he plays on a reasonable tag (for RBs)..Not something people should obsess over.

Schoen’s got this!
None of that is too surprising

Dex is young, borderline all-pro and the foundation of the defense, pay the man.

Leo is up there in age and banged up every year. Hes still good but not long for the team. Don’t kick the can down the road.

Saquon probably should have taken the deal but at this point it’s the franchise tag. Here’s to him having an all world year and getting paid by someone at the end.
If they

truly have not started negotiating with LW, it means a cut is more likely than most of us thought, and that an extension is almost certain not to happen. They could still move dead money to future years without an extension if they need to.

The Giants would be foolish to give SB a contract close to what they previously offered. Anything with more than $10MM of guaranteed is nuts at this point. Would be OK with drafting a RB high and cutting him, if he does not sign tag before draft day. I would have the rescind paper set up to send before the draft starts.
Why talk with Williams now?

Get the long term deals done with your core guys first. Once you have a better understanding of what your cap space will look like this year, next year, and the year after then you know what to do with Williams. Like Schoen said with Golladay, take your medicine now. Why keep pushing off the payments so you are increasing the amount of money in future years and lowering cap space? I don't find this odd at all.

Agree that a cut of LW is now a possibility. As to Barkley - they are not going to screw him, period. It is possible that they work out a deal to sign and trade him to a team willing to pay him more, but I doubt it. I think the last offer will stand. What they may do is sign him to a 1 year deal that will allow him to move on after the season.
Here was something Schoen said
Lines of Scrimmage : 3/28/2023 8:20 am : link
regarding Williams about a month ago.

“When he’s healthy, I still think Leo’s a good player in the league,” Schoen said. “When you look in the draft the last few years, the defensive tackles are just not producing as they have in the past. So it’s becoming harder and harder to find those guys. We want to be solid up front on both sides of the ball. We know what the [cap] number is, but we still think he plays at a high level.”

Be interesting how it shakes out.

If he does not need to I don't see him rushing. You have the draft and perhaps Williams is more willing to sign a favorable extension as we get closer to camp or JS lets him play out the season. I'll be surprised with a cut.
Still have trouble believing they will cut Leo

What would our DL look like if they did that. Nacho, Dex, and say Robinson. Yikes. And folks thought we were thin last year. We’d be just as thin and significantly less talented. And our shiny new ILB would spend the season with an OG sitting on his chest. No thanks.
There's no way they are cutting him.
robbieballs2003 : 3/28/2023 8:44 am : link
He is playing this year. What is the point of cutting him now? You can also trade him if they wanted him off the team. The Giants can eat a good portion of that salary if they choose to do so but I don't see it. They want to win.
Signing Lawrence long term
JoeyBigBlue : 3/28/2023 8:45 am : link
Should be the priority right now. The longer we wait, the higher his number will go. I’d be hesitant about extending Williams because 1)he’s going to want a nice contract 2)he’s coming off a down season. I’d keep him at his number now, and it worse comes to worse (we need cap room to manage the season), you restructure his deal and add more dead cap to next season’s salary cap.
Cutting LW
Jolly Blue Giant : 3/28/2023 9:02 am : link
Makes no sense. He has trade value. Even with that contract.
I can't see them cutting Leo
D HOS : 3/28/2023 9:03 am : link
That leaves a big hole to fill which will not be cheap nor easy.

Bobby Skinner thinks they add another void year and suffer some more future dead money. Not ideal but may be unavoidable.
We're down
Spider43 : 3/28/2023 9:55 am : link
To about $4M in cap space now, after the flurry of all the FA activity. So we should start making moves to fix that. Most everything should be on the table.
I don't think they will or should
mfjmfj : 3/28/2023 11:33 am : link
cut LW, but it definitely seems possible. It is a simple question. Is he worth $18MM this year? And the idea that you can trade him for a valuable asset is silly. No one is trading a real asset for the right to pay FMV+ to a good to very good DT who had injuries problems last year. If he does get traded he should get some award as the only player in history to be involved in 2 of the dumbest trades of all time.
Barkley easily doubles his salary...

with endorsements and commercials in the NY market. His best bet financially is to get a contract done. The Giants might have pulled his original offer off the table, but Mara's not gonna cheap out on him.
