NFT: Spring Lawn Care Routine

BigBlue2112 : 3/28/2023 10:22 am
Dare I say Spring is here? What is your Spring lawn care routine? Looking to switch things up this year.
For years I did it all myself

and my lawn looked pretty good. We lost a big maple tree in our fromt yard and now direct sunlight on a large part of my fromt lawn. Crab grass loved the heat and I have a hard time controlling the spread. This year I gave up early and hired a landscaper. getting old and traveling more so time to let someone else do it.
Lawncare is one of my hobbies

spring is pretty quiet for me

Basic fertilizer and maintenance. No pre-emergent for me since my lawn is thick enough to crowd out weeds

Most the big stuff happens in early fall
I do my own mowing and weekly maintenance but I hired

Sunlight Lawn and Shrub Care a few years ago to do the feed and weed treatments. Made a huge difference having regular treatment, especially the fall aeration and reseeding. The first year was a big improvement, the second year was night and day. Money well spent.

I also hired DiIorio Landscaping to do the weeding and mulching of the flower beds. Just got to be too much for me now that my son doesn't live at home anymore.
Nothing fancy but I find this works really well.

Scott’s with Halts. Apply it at about 1 1/2 times recommended amount. Lime liberally. No weeds all year. Grass greens up beautifully. No negative effects from the over application.
For me in North Texas in the spring

Pre emergent on Bermuda grass late February to control weeds. Followed up by basic fertilizer 6 weeks later
Pretty much nothing

I mulch the leaves in the fall. I'm happy with anything green. I mow it with a mulching mower. No chemicals, no sprinklers. IMHO mine looks no better or no worse than my neighbors.

My neighbor replaced her entire lawn with Astro turf. So that's an interesting solution.
This is a good time to begin adding nutrients to your soil..

most people treat the grass and not the soil. Having soil (not clay) that is optimal for grass will help your grass not only look better but it will help withstand drought and weeds to some degree.
Typically I have the best lawn in the neighborhood

But the past year I’ve been breaking in a stubborn puppy who uses his designated area about 50% of the time. He’s a big boy, too, and treats my backyard like it’s the Indianapolis Motor Speedway so I’m dealing with some damage that needs to be repaired.

I handle repairs and maintenance myself, but I hire a fertilizer company for grass, trees and shrubs and a landscaper for spring cleanup, de-thatching and fall aeration. Most years it’s easy because the process is established. This year I’ll be pretty busy thanks to the pup.
I don’t do anything but weed treat

I use Q zone, mulch cut, edge.
I always recommend naturalawn on these threads

If they have a franchise in your area. I always had awesome, thick,
healthy, grass.

They weren't in Nashville so I did it myself with Sunday. Internet based, they measure out your lawn with Google maps and you send them a soil sample, and they send you organic nutrients and a hose end sprayer. We went that way last year because we started beekeeping and wanted to stay organic and do it ourselves to keep people away from the bees.

Mixed results but last summer was brutal.

Spring is time for pre-emergent and there's plenty of organic ones.

I recommend overseeing with a mix of grass and mini clover. Stays green, short, easy to mow and maintain without chemicals. That's what we're going to do this year. Transform the lawn with clover.

I did! My wife and I went a few weeks ago and loved it. Giuseppe was all over the place, making conversation with all of his guests. We’ll be back again for sure.

Plus the initial mowing/mulching to cut back the blanket of dead grass that forms when the Bermuda grass goes dormant for the winter (I just cut mine down last weekend).
As the forsythia goes so goes the season...

Shaving dead Bermuda grass in the spring is a mess. I need to wear a mask it’s so dusty dirty.

Im waiting for some more consistent warmer temps. Last year I had two trees taken down in my backyard and they had to use a bobcat to tow the trunk out so the guy had to level my yard and he also put seed down. Then I put weed and feed down, which I am never doing again. The stuff stinks and it's full of herbicide and pesticide. This year I plan to use Green Gobbler for the weeds and then get some Scotts Rapid Grow.

and get their preemergent. All natural, organic, and it works great.
