Last year, The KC Chiefs wanted CB Trent McDuffie. To insure getting him, they traded 3 picks (29, 94, 121) to New England to get the 21st pick and draft McDuffie.
According to the various value charts for draft picks, the Chiefs overpaid slightly (by only 18 points) to complete the trade.
Could that happen again this year? Well, the math works if you consider the value of the Giants 25th pick.
Now if the player the Giants covet is there at 25, you take him. Its that simple.
But if not, a move like this keeps you in Round 1 (keeps the 5th year team option) and would help us recoup the 3rd round pick given to get Waller and provide another 6th. That's a lot of value for the Giants sliding 6 slots.
And as we saw last season, Schoen and Brett Veach put together the Toney deal.
Anything can happen on draft night, but this scenario has some history and logic on why it could happen.
I think the Giants are actually more likely to trade up slightly for a WR than trade down. The problem is that Colin and other posters are obsessed with getting JSN or Flowers and are willing to give up whatever draft capital is necessary to do so. They think the Giants share that desire. I hope they are wrong.
Getting back the late 3rd rounder would not entice me either. You are dropping from 25 to 31, that is 6 high end prospects going before your selection.
I think they'll have a short list of 3-4 players who they'll either have to move up to get, or move back if they aren't there.
I wouldn't be shocked to see us not make a first round pick, I also wouldn't be shocked to see us taking JSN (if he's there) at 14-18.
Ah yea 12 legit and a bunch of trash wins a playoff game. How do you guys arrive at these stupid conclusions?!
The giants roster isn’t where it needs to be but we don’t have gaping holes like everyone here says
What I’m thinking of is that they could trade back and get a bunch of picks for the 24 draft. A club to trade with the Giants would probably want to defer what they pay so the 24 pick might be a higher pick than a 23 pick. I don’t know realistic this and even if it, how good is the 24 class supposed to be other than possibly QBs.
Hopefully that changes with Schoen and Company. Last year D.J. Davidson made valuable contributions. His injury clearly effected the teams run defense for the rest of the season.
And Darrian Beavers was taking snaps with the 1st team defense before his unfortunate injury.
There are thousands of players eligible to be drafted each year, and only about 260 are. With the millions of dollars invested in research and scouting, I have a much stronger opinion of all the Day Three picks under Schoen.
There are solid starters in the NFL that were drafted on Day Three and signed as UDFAs. No reason the Giants can't hit on those picks, similar to the recent Day Three success of the Chiefs.
The Giants still have a lot of areas needed for improvement. The trade I suggested keeps them with a 1st rounder and provides an opportunity to get two more.
And don't forget that the draft this year is in Kansas City. Imagine the home crowd if the Chiefs move up and a Draft Night trade is announced.
